Selective Lifestyle Trends

To anyone studying or working in home decor, learning about trends in interior decorating is one of the most exciting parts of life. And it should be, aside from work, the home is where we spend the bulk of our time, and like clothing it needs to be a reflection of us. Style Bust searches the web for the latest and greatest trends for the home; our hope is that you can use some of our findings in the environment you’ve created at home!

My Ideal Closet

One of my favorite things to daydream about is my ideal closet. I live in a 1200 sq ft apartment in downtown SF, so spacious closets and vanity areas are literally the stuff of my dreams.  As you’re about to see, I have some seriously high expectations for my dream closet space.

My dream closet is more of a dressing room than a closet.  Not only would it be a place to store my clothes, but also a place to put on my makeup and do all of  the “getting ready” tasks that I normally have to run between my closet and bathroom to do. There would be a chair and a side table so that I could chill in the closet, read magazines and drink champagne.image of white dressing roomI like the idea of a white-on-white or neutral color scheme so that I’d have a clean backdrop for putting together outfits and trying things on.

In most closets the clothes are stored behind doors or tucked away in cabinets.  While I love the clean aesthetic that creates, I also like to see all my stuff at once.  This next picture reminds me of a clothing store (for whatever reason Mango comes to mind).  I like that everything is out, yet still looks neat.

Finally, the purple closet. This one is decorated so well! I love that it incorporates the open closet and drawer space. The ceiling looks fantastic and the mirror is to die for!

Making Body Music by DJ Daito Manabe for dENiZEN

Denizen, an off-shoot of Levi’s, worked with Japanese electronic engineer DJ Daito Manabe to produce this video showcasing his magical music machine which produces sounds based on body movement. Levi’s Strauss & Co. explain more:

On his latest project with dENiZEN™, he is making music with the movements of the human body. Working with celebrity choreographer Mikiko Mizuno and some of Japan’s top hip-hop dancers, Daito designed unique sounds for each dancer’s unique personality and dance style. Together, the dancers created music that truly moved to their own beat.

Top Three TV Shows

Day 27 of my 30 day blogging challenge is to list my favorite TV Showsproject runway logo

As a style blog owner, it would be a crime if I didn’t list Project Runway as one of my favorite shows. Season 9 has been spectacular, and while I really like Anya as a person, Viktor has the best designs and an awesome personality. I really hope he wins this season! Also, did you know that there is a Project Runway Action site? The company I work for (by day) runs it…so it’d would be terrible for me not to plug here! Oddly enough, I’ve been sitting next to the rack of season 8 and 9 garments that are available to buy on the Project Runway Action for a few weeks now, and I can say with certainty that Viktor’s construction is impeccable!

(psst: the company I work for also runs my Lifetime shop, where you can buy non-auction Project Runway goods).

castle logoTyler and I just started watching Castle about a month ago. Seasons 1-3 were fantastic, making me a huge fan. I’m not sure I fully understand the direction the show is taking in its current season (season 4). I plan to continue watching because Kate Beckett is gorgeous, and her relationship with Richard Castle is entertaining. The company I work for also runs Shop The Shows, which has a small collection of Castle merchandise.

This show has been good for so many seasons now. My favorite character is Robin, followed by Barney. I think I relate to Robin’s character most…that’s probably because she’s from the North! When I was a young pup in rural Minnesota I did hope to someday grow up and become Canadian! Should be no surprise by now that the company I work for also runs the CBS Store – where you can find a handful of HIMYM goodies.

Today I Saw

Day 25 of my 30 day blogging challenge is to post about something I saw during the day. I didn’t feel like I had seen anything noteworthy until my friend forwarded me an email she received from drugstore.com. The subject of her email was: “What are you trying to say, drugstore.com?” The email outlines items she’s purchased from them before, similar items on sale, and items they suggest she should purchase…the suggestions are pretty fantastic!

Top 5 Cities I’d Like To Visit

There are a handful of cities that interest me, but since day 24 of my 30 day blogging challenge is only asking for my top five, I’ll keep this short and simple.

Here’s the countdown.

#5 Wellington, New Zealand. I want to go to to Wellington becuase it’s in New Zealand, and who doesn’t want to go there? I hear the city is crammed with more bars, cafes and restaurants per capita than New York, and has a handful of gourmet food producers including some 10 coffee roasteries (I love coffee).

#4 Lisbon, Portugal. I want to take a Spain + Portugal trip within the next five years. One of the main destinations will surely be Lisbon, a city of eclectic neighborhoods meant for exploring. I hear it’s a great town for walking, although it’s very hilly. I envision a romantic version of San Francisco!

#3 Tokyo, Japan. I’ve been interested in Japan for a very long time. Watching Lost in Translation (a handful of times) only intensifies my interest to go there. The city is huge, it never sleeps, and everyone there appears to have fantastic style – which I’ve watched for many years via: Tokyo Street Style.

#2 Stockholm, Sweden. I’m half Swedish and half Norwegian (for the most part), so it’d be pretty ridiculous if I wasn’t interested in visiting Stockholm, and Oslo for that matter. I’m excited to vacation to the Scandinavian countries to see more people who look like me, but prettier, and learn about the way I could have turned out if my ancestors never left the great country!

#1 Hong Kong. Hands Down #1 destination. I realize this city isn’t nearly as large as Toyko, Mexico City, and probably a handful of other international cities I’m not mentioning, but this city seems magical. Not only do I want to visit, I want to find a reason to be stuck there for a handful of months. Maybe a short term job can take me there, I don’t know – but I’d really like to live and breath Hong Kong for awhile like a local.

A Fashion Trend I Miss

Day 21 of my 30 day blogging challenge is to share a fashion trend I miss. This is extremely difficult for me, I was born in the early 80’s so I can’t rightfully say I miss a fashion trend from any decade before the 80’s since I didn’t live through it.

I think we all can agree that all the decent trends of the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s are still alive in 2012 collections. In the 80’s we picked up denim, tight-fitting pants, loose shirts, lace, and color block garments. The 90’s gave us anti-fashion based around the casual t-shirt and denim look.  The 90’s also brought the thong (underwear) which had an unfortunate whale tail trend with super lowrise denim in the early 2000’s. In the 2000’s we also got accustomed to fashion mash-ups. Shoes were round toed shoes, knee high boots and ballet flats.

The only trends I miss are in shoes and hair, and aren’t anything too specific. Frankly, I’m very over wedges, I never really understood them and only have two pairs (which hardly get worn). I like girly, pointy pumps in fun prints and colors. I would promote more use of these types of shoes in everyday wear. I’d also propose the banana clip for hair. I think there are a lot of cool things you can do with a banana clip that we haven’t even seen yet. So cross you fingers for the resurgence of this trend…I promise to be wearing them in full swing soon enough!

Things I’d Rather Be Doing Right Now

image of fashion-blogs

Day 20 of the 30 Day Bloggers Challenge is about things I’d rather be doing.

I always enjoy shopping online, buying makeup at Sephora, eating, running, lifting weights, sitting in a park with a book, having coffee with friends, going to SFMOMA, watching a good movie, seeing a live show, traveling, sleeping, riding the bike I don’t yet own, etc. I’m not saying I don’t enjoy writing for, and running a website – I get a lot of pleasure from doing this as well. However I’m hoping to change-up this site’s format within the next few weeks, I’ve been scouting for a new writer to be the main voice of Style Bust.
