The seasons, they are a changin’
It’s about that time of year again to winter-ize your wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean you have to lose your sense of style. It does mean that it’s time to replace your cardigan with a wool cape, or your summer socks for a thick pair of tights.
It can be a little tricky to transition into another season, but thanks to all of the street style websites, like Altamira and the Sartorialist, you’ll have all the inspiration at your fingertips!
I’ve found 4 pre-Fall looks that can easily be transitioned into the perfect Fall outfits!
Swap our your mini skirt for a maxi skirt, pair with a chunky sweater and oxfords for an effortlessly chic look.
Wear your floral dress right through winter, just remember to layer a thick pair of tights and top this look off with some warm layers.
Slim fitting cargo pants and a cardigan is a classic casual look. Pair them with a scarf and industrial boots for a cooler-weather day and an on-trend Fall look.
There is no need to give up that lady-like skirt for the winter months. Just add a cropped leather jacket and lace-up ankle boots to toughen up the soft silhouette.
Rugby Holiday 2010 Lookbook
Rugby Ralph Lauren launched the first batch of their Holiday 2010 collection in stores and at Rugby.com on October 13th. The collection features all the great preppy pieces we’ve grown to expect from Rugby; cargo pants, tweed jackets, blazers, cardigans and sweaters. Unfortunately nothing about the collection is really that new or cutting edge – Rugby is known for playing it safe, and that is what they’ve done once more with the Holiday collection.
There are a couple of pieces I especially like; the evergreen tree/reindeer womens sweater as well as the burgundy, yellow and black stripped mens blazer.

One stop Fall shopping at Etsy.com
Having trouble finding some of those must-have pieces for Fall? Me too. I have been searching for a good chunky sweater and a cape coat, which I know I can find at stores like H&M, but I want something more unique and special.
Rag & Bone, Vena Cava, VPL – Fall 2010
I found myself searching on Etsy.com, a site that I have a love/hate relationship with. I love it because you can find pretty much anything you’re searching for, sellers can personalize their stores (so it seems like you’re visiting their personal website) and there will be no bidding wars, like on eBay. And the only reason why I might dislike Etsy, is the amount of time I spend on the site (I tend to get sucked-in and forget what I was searching for in the first place)! With all that said, Etsy is a goldmine for finding vintage pieces that channel current Fall 2010 runway looks.
1. Southwestern poncho – Vim and Vigor
2. Silk kimono style blouse – Something About Me
3. 1970’s secretary dress – Vintage Marmalade
4. Camel cape – More to Adore Vintage
5. Military – Mother Midnight Vintage
6. Baroque and Roll – Mary’s Menagerie
7. Minimalism – Vanity
If you’re missing a few key pieces for Fall, search Etsy by using keywords like; faux fur coats, military style jackets, silk blouses and camel color coats. Zara Fall 2010: Pure perfection
I think I could be in love! If you’ve read anything I’ve posted about Fall 2010, you know that I am head over heels about this season. I love everything about it; the simplicity, the shapes, the chunky knit sweaters, the floor grazing dresses, and the muted colors (just to name a few). When I came across the Zara Fall 2010 lookbook, I knew I found my perfect match!
Maxi Mania
As the warm weather fades and the chill sets in, it becomes time to store away those minis. But don’t let your nostalgia of sunny days and short skirts take reign; try the maxi skirt! While the skirt is floor-length, it is, without a doubt, a trans-seasonal piece — don it in the winter, spring, summer, or fall. There’s something so elegant about this floor-sweeping skirt, and depending on what accompanies it, the maxi provides an ethereal, professional, and classic look all in one–that’s the beauty of its versatility. And we can’t forget the comfort and mobility it allows for!
As for what to pair with the maxi, there are many options to make your look either casual or dressy. If you’re opting for a more sophisticated look, try a silk tank or blouse tucked in or cropped (no stomach though!). For a cover-up, try a cropped blazer, leather jacket, or cardigan. The key is to keep both the top and cover-up cropped, as longer pieces will hide the maxi skirt and cut off your waistline. Try peep-toe mid-heel pumps or chic ballerina flats. On the other hand, if you’re wearing the skirt during the day in a more relaxed setting, try a cotton tank or plain white tee — again, tucked in or cropped. For outerwear, sport a jean jacket or tuck in a flannel. And for your feet, wear sandals — gladiator, flip-flops, etc. Or again, add some flats. Whichever way you go, you’re bound to look chic with the maxi.
1. Rick Owens Lilies Skirt: $695
2. Sparkle and Fade Sheer Maxi Skirt: $38
3. Opening Ceremony Long Skirt with Slit: $298
4. Rachel Pally Long Striped Skirt: $189
5. Richard Chai Love Skirt: $265
Back to basics for Fall 2010
Sure, a closet full of the latest trends would be nice but if you’re a regular gal like me, all you really need is a few key pieces to keep you looking trendy throughout the year.
10 pieces for an ultimate Fall 2010 closet
This Fall is all about classic shapes, easy-to-wear colors, comfortable fabrics and simple everyday styles. So, go ahead and wear your favorite pair of wide leg jeans with a button down shirt-you’ll look 1970’s cool but extremely polished (think Jane Birkin).
Here are 5 outfits, showing that a few Fall staple pieces can get you through the season!
All you need are a few pieces to keep you looking on-trend until Spring. Visit the Gap for basics, like a classic button down shirt and wide leg denim. For trendier/seasonal pieces (e.g. cape or wedge boots), check out stores such as H&M, Aldo and Forever21.
And remember, keep it simple this Fall!
Developing a Sense of Style that Defines Your Personality
As I get older I’ve become more aware of what types of clothing work for my body and personality. For me finding clothing for my body type wasn’t nearly as challenging as finding clothing for my personality – that’s because I have a pretty standard build.
I’ve noticed more and more that personal style plays a strong role in defining their image….and this is especially true of first impressions. Every day when we pick out our customized outfits, we’re saying “this is who I am today” to everyone we encounter.
Right now I’m working to bring a little more personality to my personal brand through my outfits. I’m literally thinking about this each morning. I ask myself these few questions (maybe you can play along too):
- How do my clothes portray my personality?
- What style of dress is appropriate for my job?
- If I could wear anything to work today, what would I wear?
- Whose style of dress do I like?
- What do other people think about my clothes?
Fashion is something that gets people talking, and who doesn’t like a compliment? I believe that good can come from outwardly expressing personal style. In some form or another every brand makes a fashion statement. What statement does your brand make?

Trends to wear for Fall 2010
The September issues of fashion magazines are known to be the biggest and the baddest of them all. When I see one of those thick magazines, I know I must have them! This year, instead of looking through them, cover to cover just once, then adding them to my never-ending magazine collection, I thought I’d tear out my favorite looks for Fall 2010 and narrow them down into “wearable” Fall trends (unfortunately, I do not have a scanner, so I recreated the looks)!
Here are five Fall outfits (inspired by my favorite trends) that I want to be wearing now!
Bomber jacket and Skinny jeans
Yes, a rather simple outfit. This look is practical to wear everyday. The all black with a gray suede platform wedge heel is perfect for an evening out with friends. In my opinion, the military inspired hooded bomber is just right for Fall!
Slouchy button down and Mini skirt
This can be a tricky look to pull off because it can look sloppy if the proportions aren’t right, but if done correctly, you’ll look effortlessly chic! A comfortable boyfriend button down with a body-con embellished Givenchy-esque mini skirt says that you’re laid back, but have great style.
Silk blouse and Wide leg trousers
This is probably my favorite look. I can see pretty much anyone wearing this and looking hip to the current trends. Trouser pants can look androgynous, but paired with a silk blouse you’ll achieve a cool 70’s look! Add a blazer, and you’re ready for a chilly evening.
Sweater and Shorts
The Sweater and shorts combo is another look that I really love, especially when paired with wedge boots and socks. I’m all about shorts for Fall, especially leather or suede shorts – but be careful with leather or suede shorts, they can be a bit harsh, even overdone, for an everyday look. Having that said…these are great pleated suede shorts that can either be dressed up or paired with a cozy over-sized sweater, creating a very on trend Fall 2010 look.
V-Neck shirt and Pencil skirt
I think everyone can agree that pencil skirts are very sexy. To tone down the sex appeal, wear a tight-fitting pencil skirt with a slim fitting v-neck top. Tuck your top into the skirt just slightly for a the messy, “I didn’t really try to tuck my shirt in” look. This type of shirt tuck will hug your curves while keeping this outfit appropriate for the office.
