Upgrade Your Denim For 2012

I spent the last week of 2011 cleaning out my closet for the new year. I sold a couple of pieces to Crossroads, then donated the rest.  I’m a sucker for denim, so I usually hold on to many pairs of jeans, even if I only wear them 4 times a year. But this year, I decided to grow up, and move on from these older jeans to make room for newer styles, and better quality basics.

For 2012, I’ve decided to keep only the basic denim silhouettes and styles already in my closet. This includes a couple solid pairs of skinnies and many flare legged pants (I love this look). I’m also going to stop buying cheap, trendy jeans that I’m not totally in love with and start saving up for more practical, well-fitting designer jeans. With all the January sales going on now, it’s actually a sensible time to buy new replacement jeans; ones I will look forward to wearing non-stop.

Below is a short “Upgrade Your Denim For 2012 Guide.”

Upgrade your denim in 2012From left to right:

  • Upgrade your everyday skinny denim to the perfect shade of dark denim for 2012.
  • Switch from colored jeans, and khaki color jeans to the hot 2012 color “smokey quartz.”
  • Find the prefect high-waisted flare leg pants. These will dress up any otherwise casual looking outfit and make it perfect for evening.
  • Swap out your black jeans for blacked waxed denim for a bit of pizzazz.
  • Many sources, including MTV Fora indicate that printed pants are here to stay. Upgrade your printed denim to a print that is timeless, like animal print.

Honeycombs In Your Home

Hi there! I’m Jessica, a writer for Arcadian Lighting. Every day I get to discover beautiful, inspiring interior design ideas and light fixtures, and then get to share them with blogs like Style Bust.

I’m going to be sharing a wonderful design trend that first became popular in the 1960’s – honeycomb patterns! They’re fun, versatile, and classic. I hope you enjoy!

Honeycomb

These creative DIY honeycomb shaped shelves combine style with functionality. The geometric honeycomb shape is interesting and unique, while also providing cute little ‘nooks’ to display your favorite pieces of artwork, tchotchkes, knick knacks or photos.

Honeycomb

A colorful honeycomb patterned quilt gives this bedroom a fun, vintage feel. The quilt was made using old clothing – a perfect way to recycle what you already have, while making a colorful accent for your bedroom. The red floor lamp is just the right color for this room, as well.

Honeycomb

This very eclectic bedroom features a honeycomb mirror that’s offbeat and unexpected. I love all the quirky accents, especially the strange pillows.

Honeycomb

The neutral colored honeycomb backsplash in this kitchen is an interesting accent that draws on the ‘homey’ feeling of a beehive. I particularly like the modern touch of adding written words above the stove.

Honeycomb

This cool and contemporary living room features a whole wall of honeycomb patterns in a fresh grey and pale blue palette. Random ‘combs’ have clear glass panels, allowing a fun way to see through to the next room. The organic shaped pendant lights are a clever touch, as well.

Honeycomb

Honeycomb moulding is a particularly stylish and unexpected accent in any room. This ceiling adds a bit of texture and interest to what appears to be an all-white room.

Honeycomb

The colorful honeycomb pattern on this fabric headboard really brightens the room and adds a playful element to this fresh bedroom.

Honeycomb

This brilliant honeycomb mirror is mounted on a used pallet and placed over the mantel in a cozy little living room. The silver and amber-colored mirrors really create an eye-catching focal point.

A Glimpse Into My Work World

I have been asked what my home office work set up is like many times. What computers and devices I use, how geeky/cool I really I am, etc. So to close the year, I thought I’d fill you in! I run this blog, work a 9-5 (not from this office), have a consulting gig, run an Alumni chapter, and have side projects I work on at the same time. Having a good working environment for my home projects is really important. Here are the items I use every day to make it through my projects effectively.

Computing:

image of Style Bust Computers

I use a Dell studio XPS laptop with a 17 inch screen, i7 with a backlit keyboard & Blu-Ray. It’s a great little device (though noisy at times) and the speakers aren’t bad! The battery lasts about 6 hours, works for me! Secondary devices include w Dell widescreen monitor, an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2 (just got this for Christmas from my in-laws). The computer set up is fantastic with the second monitor. Having an iPhone and iPad keep me connecting when I’m not at my desk. That said, I still need long breaks from the computer everyday to keep sane. Eating, Books, TV, the gym and meditation are among the top things I do while away from my computer.

The Office:

Style Bust Office

I share this office with my husband, Tyler, who has way cooler gadgets…but this post is about me, not him! I’ve been told that if you are in a happy environment you will work better. This space is great for me, I’m not sure it makes me particularly happy, but it doesn’t upset me either, so I think I’m good!

The Chair:

Chair

I recently upgraded from a Pottery Barn Teen chair (bought years ago from a sample sale while working for Pottery Barn) to an adult Steelcase office chair. I’ve had more back, neck and shoulder pain this year. So more than ever, I realize the benefits of sitting in a comfortable and supportive chair.

Office Inspiration:

I keep cards and other inspirational art, magazine clippings, etc. on a wire frame right above my desk. It’s nice to glance up from time to time and remember who and what inspires me.

Soma San Francisco

I also have a fantastic view of Soma (there’s lots of fog in this photo). I can see into other offices and apartments. It’s nice to see other people roaming about to remind me that I’m not alone!

Phyto – Scalp Stimulant

This is the time of year when most of us like to take very long and hot showers, which may feel nice, but it wreaks havoc on the scalp. I started using Phytopolleine Universal Elixir – Scalp Stimulant because of my dry scalp, even though I didn’t have dandruff my scalp was very dry and terribly itchy, especially on the area where I normally have a ponytail. So far I’ve used it twice a week for a month and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

phyto_scalp_stimulant

This formula harnesses the natural powers of rosemary, sage, cypress, eucalyptus, and lemon to instantly purify the scalp and catalyze microcirculation. It is recommended for those suffering from an unbalanced scalp whether it is dry, oily, itchy, or irritated. A fortifying boost sensitive, weak, anemic hair, it serves as an ideal preparation for thinning hair treatments such as Phytocyane and Phytoaxil®.

As for my personal experience: the first time I tried on the product my eyes almost watered from the scent. It’s a very strong Pine-sol type smell, I actually put on a shower cap the first time. When you use this product it is very important to shampoo, rinse and repeat otherwise you will be left with a slight lingering pine scent. From reviews I’ve read, some people experience a tingling sensation as well.

The results showed from the first application. Even when it’s wet straight from the shower my hair feels “fluffier”, its like my roots came back to life and they stand taller. As the weeks have gone by and I continue to use the product I’ve noticed my hair in general looking healthier and younger.

I was beginning to develop that horrible looking line in the back of my head associated with old age and limp hair, but it has slowly disappeared and all my head looks full of hair. I see more new hair growing and I’ve been shedding less.  During this last month I haven’t used any masks, leave-in treatments or oils on my hair, only Phyto, my regular shampoo and conditioner. But the fact that my scalp is getting healthier means that my hair is looking amazing!

The bottle itself is small and using it twice a week I expect it will last me no more than six weeks, but eventually I’ll scale the usage down to once a week….it’s fortunate that I like the smell of Pine-Sol.

Bonsoir Paris: The Duramen Wood Art Series

I don’t feature art very often on Style Bust, but I thought the wood sculptures series called “Duramen” (heartwood) by Bonsoir Pairs was worth sharing!

The creation of Bonsoir Paris, the “Duramen” series was born of a simple impulse, the one to break with conventional ways of exhibiting, BONSOIR PARIS and its team have imagined a series of frames so strongly mistreated that they have become unrecognizable. Their wish is to break the properties of the compound, a form of compromise as minimal and it is efficient.

image of Bonsoir Paris Duramen Glossy WengeThe contrast of the dark chocolate-like wood and the white gallery wall is striking. The wood sculpture is hand-carved from Glossy Wenge wood.

The sculpture above is made of polished Oak and sanded Fir wood. The matte and the glossy make this abstract piece even more interesting to me. This piece is probably my favorite from the series.

image of Bonsoir Paris Duramen polished linden on hammered pearThe piece above was sculpted with polished Linden and hammered Pear wood. Unlike the piece above this one, this piece doesn’t give the same look for glossy to matte wood finishes, leaving the look a little dull (in my opinion). I’m not bashing on the piece, I think what Bonsoir Paris has done for wood sculptures is brilliant, this is just my least favorite piece.

You can read more about the Duramen series on Behance. Visit Bonsoir Paris to get a full look at the photos and some behind the scenes “making of” photos as well!
