5 No-Fail Eyebrow Tips from Robert Sweet William
Barney’s Blog, thewindow.barneys.com is chalked full with great articles about, well lets face it…everything you need to know.

I’m a huge fan of full eyebrows. I’ve actually been trying to grow mine in forever (5 years) with little success. I was thrilled to come across this well written post about 5 no-fail eyebrow tips from no other than industry expert himself, Robert Sweet William. Here are the tips:
- Be Prepared: Start with the right tools: a good pair of tweezers, scissors, and brow powder or pencil are essentials.
- Beware Of Trends: Bushy eyebrows may look great on the runway, but for real life, choose a classic shape that will stand the test of time.
- Go Straight Ahead: The eyebrow hair should lay nice and flat to the skin, but do not round them. Instead, keep the thickness even and straight.
- Step Away From The Tweezers: Don’t over-tweeze! A defined shape is crucial, but going overboard with tweezers can lead to barely-there brows. If you think you’ve overdone it, step away and make an appointment with a brow specialist ASAP.
- Guy-Brows Need Grooming Too: Many men are unnecessarily tweezer-shy. Just clean up your brows and trim the long hairs. Go with the natural shape of the brow—no forced arches.
Here are a couple must have items:

Beauty Is Life Tweezers in Gold $28.50

Tweezerman Brow Shaping Scissors and Brush $19.00

Laura Mercier Brow Powder Duo $24.00
Club Monaco: bohemian elegance
I’ve always thought of Club Monaco as a place to get your “high-end” basics (like your classic pencil skirt, tailored blazer or silk blouse). I’ve never really thought of Club Monaco as being trendy or fashion forward – I’ve been wrong for so long.
I recently came across Club Monaco’s Fall 2011 lookbook, and I was pleasantly surprised. Taking inspiration from the 50’s beatnik movement and style icons like Jane Asher and Edie Sedgwick, Club Monaco’s Fall 2011 collection is the perfect blend of modern bohemian style.
And if the Fall collection isn’t enough, Club Monaco has teamed up with Scosha & Co. and releasing a mix of delicately beaded bracelets, charm necklaces and oxidized silver rings. All of the designs were inspired by the designers (Scosha Woolridge’s) many travels around the world.

Give your “makeup bag” a healthy check up!
Jumping right in…”beauty products do go bad, Yep —– they expire like dairy”. At best, they stop performing; at worst, they can cause irritations or infections so hoarding is not the way to go ladies! Sure, if unopened and kept at room temperature you can add a couple of years but once they are unsealed, watch out…the clock begins to tick-tock!

Let’s break this down between the obvious and the not-so-obvious:
Obvious:
mascara – (3 MONTHS) thee number one item that dries up in a blink of eye so toss it from your cosmetic bag or makeup drawer if appears DRY or if you’ve kept track of its use ( trust me, this baby won’t perform beyond 90 DAYS) the wand is suppose to be dark/wet not DRY & FRIED; a perfect culprit for clumpy lashes or worst STY’s. Caution: never pump the wand — that only pushes air into the tube, causing it to dry out faster. Instead, slowly draw out and twist the brush to scrape the tube’s interior and pick up product.
face makeup – (6 MONTHS) if you see separation or it has a rancid smell, guess what honey – time to toss! realllllllllllly, did you think it would last forever in constant contact with dirty sponges, dirty fingers and dirty brushes; actually its just sure bet for breeding bacterial growth. Good news! your purse compact won’t die on you so early – their shelf life can extend up to 2yrs. (excluding the sponges).
lipshades – (2 YRS) both gloss or sticks are safe up to two-years, the guide for lips is that (if your lipstick doesn’t glide on in a creamy fashion then get rid of it)! I mean lipstick can already look dry so why encourage the beast.
Unobvious:
lipliners – Pencils get constantly grinded away removing the old surface and sharpening for perfection – these babies last beyond 2 yrs. (Just be sure to regularly sanitize your sharpener with rubbing alcohol.)
Powder shadows are less prone to contamination because they lack water (if you’re like most and you wet your brush to deepen the pigment toss after 6 months) truth be told these water techniques ultimately effect this product. A tale tale sign; when your shadows don’t give you the same color pay-off – time to toss!
Blush – same guidelines for your powder compacts, 2 year rule.
Liquid eyeliners (3 MONTHS) ; again watch the wet Willy’s!
Cream eye shadows – (6 MONTHS) point blank!
C’mon, summer is coming give your makeup bag a proper check-up and toss out what’s probably already expired…
MyLipCandy Couture Lip Balm
Recently I received lip balm samples from a new company called MyLipCandy and I was just blown away by them.

I sampled the Banana Pudding Sweet Tube and the Chocolate Mint Sassy Tin. The first thing I noticed is the absolutely yummy smell, which is something I personally miss from the children’s lip balms. But the advantage is that even though it smells great, it doesn’t have a taste so you’re not tempted to “eat” it and drying up your lips. The balm is long lasting and very moisturizing, just applying it feels so luxurious.
I wanted to know more about MyLipCandy so I interviewed the creator Tamika Hall. She’s a best-selling author of eight books, professional public speaker, she has her own radio show “Tough Talk with Tamika”, as well as a career as a model, pageant coach, actress and award winning playwright. She has several clothing lines and now creator of this awesome beauty product.
How did MyLipCandy get started?
I created MyLipCandy out of sheer desperation and out of desire! Sounds, crazy, I know, but let me explain. (smile) I have always loved lipgloss and lip balm, and I knew that I wanted to create my own line one day; I’ll be honest, I never thought I would ever be able to actually craft it myself, but this has been one incredible ride. I made my first batch of lip balm as a thank you gift for some dancers in a show I’d choreographed!! And when I made it, I knew that I wanted to use all natural products because of a painful experience i’d had with my own lips.
A few years ago, I went through a period of extremely chapped lips that lasted for about two years. My lips were so chapped and swollen that it hurt to smile or talk. A few times I even went to the doctor because I knew there just had to be something seriously wrong, only to be told that my lips were just severely chapped. I realized that I needed to use all natural products on my lips, but I didn’t want to give up my love for glossy lips. When I finally found a lipgloss that seemed to heal my lips, I was disappointed with the fact that it had a stinky smell. When I decided to pursue MyLipCandy as my dream business, I knew that the product had to smell good enough to eat!
Where did you learn how and what to mix to create MyLipCandy?
I did a lot of research on safe products to mix together, and have actually acquired some mentors along the way. It is so important to me that my products be safe, healing, and fun to use.
When did you sell your first MyLipCandy? Do you remember who bought it?
MyLipCandy is relatively young…we are just 6 weeks old! I made my first sale the day I posted that we were open for business on Facebook back in April. I screamed when I got my first sale, I called my husband and my mother screaming. I definitely remember the first person, I am so blessed that they have come back over and over again and now send their family and friends too.
What has been the reaction to MyLipCandy?
It has been INCREDIBLE! I gave out my first batch to my dancers on April 16, It was their reaction to the product that made me stop and say “hmmm…this may be your dream lip line.” From there I have been getting rave reviews about the silky texture of our products and how they have helped to heal severely chapped lips throughout the United States and Canada. We currently have 16 flavors and offer them in both a Sweet Tube or Sassy Tin, and we are getting ready to introduce our BALMalicious Lip Gloss in the next few days for those who need a little bling in their life – in a nutshell, we have something for everyone young and mature.
Where can we buy MyLipCandy?
MyLipCandy is available online at www.mylipcandy.com, and we have a growing number of retailers around the Country that are signing up everyday to offer it in their salons.
Which one is more popular, the tin or the tube?
Honestly, they run neck and neck. The Sassy Tin is just that…it’s for the sassy woman who likes to dip her finger into the lip balm. Most women tell me that they feel sexy when they use the tin. The Sweet Tube is for the woman who is still a Diva but would prefer not to use the tube.
I love the candy fragrance, how do you choose which one to produce?
I get a lot of suggestions from customers. I actually just received a list from a little girl in Delaware who wanted to ‘suggest’ approximately fifty different flavors (laughing). I love getting those letters and emails. At the end of the day, I look at suggestions, but I have to feel comfortable with the flavors I produce. I may actually work on a certain flavor for a week or more. The flavors have to resonate with me, if I wouldn’t put it on my own lips, then it isn’t something I can offer to my customers.
Is there anything more you would like to add?
Thank you so much for this opportunity to tell the world about MyLipCandy! Also, if there are women who want to try some of our lip balm or salons, spas, or stores interested in carrying our brand, they can log onto www.mylipcandy.com or email [email protected] for more information.
Work hard, play hard: Q & A with the designers behind Revelation by ME
Gotta hot date after work on Friday and have no time to go home and change. Ladies, we totally understand. Instead of ducking into the nearest restroom and pulling out a wrinkled “date night” outfit out of your bag (yes, we’re all guilty of this), check out Revelation by ME (which stands for the designers’ names, Mydra and Eloisa). These Bay Area designers, have created a collection of transitional clothing for all of you busy fashionistas out there. The looks are fun and flirty. With dresses that are not only reversible, but dresses that can be converted into 6 different styles – what’s not to love – you get multiple pieces for the price of one!
I had the opportunity to ask the founders/designers behind Revelation by ME some questions about their inventive line of clothing.

StyleBust: How did Revelation by ME get started?
Eloisa and Mydra: One evening after work Myrda and I were invited to go out for dinner, we had a second set of clothing to dress into because we did not have enough time to run back home and change. We changed in a bathroom stall and as we were fumbling around Myrda knocked on my stall and said, “Wouldn’t it be great if we had one outfit that can easily reverse from a day to night look!” I thought it was a great idea and from there Revelation by ME was born.
Who is the Revelation by ME customer?
Revelation by ME specializes in transitional clothing for busy women on the go! She is a city dweller and lives a very busy lifestyle and does not have time to go home and change between her day and night events.
Revelation by ME Linda dress $88
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in many things but I really pay attention to women’s lifestyles and needs. Myrda loves watching the couture runway shows, bring ideas from the high fashion styles to Revelation by ME’s design table.
Since there are two of you behind the label, are each of your roles similar or do you have specific jobs/duties?
Both Myrda and I share similar duties and also have specific duties that we are each responsible for. We wear many hats throughout our work week from accounting to order fulfillment to marketing. We place our previous work and educational experience to all aspects of our small business.

How would you describe San Francisco fashion? And how does Revelation by ME fit in with the aesthetics of the city?
San Francisco is very unique when it comes to fashion. Each part of the city has its own style. You step into the Mission or Haight neighborhoods and you see grassroots, street fashion vs walking through the Marina and finding contemporary fashion which looks like its right off the runways. This is the beauty of having a fashion company in San Francisco, there is a customer for every style and Revelation by ME fits right in the closets of the Marina Girls, the Hayes Valley shoppers love us and the downtown stylist or gallery associate cant get enough of our reversible dresses and transitional separates.
What Revelation by ME piece do you think every girl should own (any signature pieces)?
Every fashionista needs to get their hands on our reversible wrap dresses like the Karri Ann or the Lorrie. You get two looks for the price of one and they are very practical and easy to wear, a must have for your summer getaways!
Revelation by ME Karri Ann dress $102
What are some of your favorite current trends/colors?
The color blocked trend has grown on us and we even used it as inspiration for some of our summer looks like the Lorrie reversible dress. I am also excited that hemlines got longer and I have to mention the bright colors like orange, electric blues and fuchsias.
Who are your favorite fashion designers or fashion icons?
Myrda and I have many style icons but we love the Kardashian sisters, Victoria Beckham and we follow the styles of the Gossip Girl cast. We are very inspired by Donna Karen, Rachel Roy, BCBG and Dior, the list can go on and on! We take inspiration from Donna Karens classic looks to Rachel Roy’s flirty looks but every season is different for us and as we design each collection we may take interest in other designers.
What are some of your favorite local stores or websites?
Some of our favorite local stores are Ooma, RAG, Union B and Mingle. Local websites Bobbepin.com, redhautejewelry.com and Kiudesigns
Where can readers purchase Revelation by ME clothing?

A huge thank you to Eloisa and Mydra for taking the time to answer a few questions for our lovely readers. We can’t wait to see what these two come up with next!
Très chic
For Spring/Summer 2011, Elizabeth and James paid ode to French femininity with a modern, and urban twist. Some of my favorites from the Elizabeth and James Spring lookbook are wispy bohemian-inspired dresses, silky print and wide-legged trousers, asymmetrical shorts, and statement coats. To say that I would wear every piece in their collection, would NOT be an understatement.

Mary-Kate and Ashley seasonally prove they are exceptional designers – turning out a unique and complete Elizabeth & James collection every season. The Spring 2011 collection will definitely satisfy any boho junky who longs for bulky and breezy textures.
Make a Rhubarb & Strawberry Pie
If you’ve ever read my blog (seafieldfarm.ca) you’ve heard me rattle on and on about a farm I had the good fortune to grow up on and if you’ve read my blog recently you’ll know that I was lucky enough to visit it this past weekend. I was excited to see the ocean, walk the fields of my youth and drink and eat (the farm’s answer to professional sport) with my family. What I had forgotten was I was visiting during prime rhubarb season, a clear indication I’d been in the city too long.

You cannot imagine my excitement when I took a quick look behind the farmhouse and saw rows and rows of dark green leaves the size and shape of elephant ears sheltering ruby red stalks.
I have a strong attachment to the farm’s rhubarb patch. When I was kid my grandmother used to give us kids raw stalks of rhubarb with a teacup of sugar for dipping. I used to love the color the rhubarb dyed my hands (I was in the midst of an intense pink phase), the crunch it made as I bit into it and the thrill of being allowed literally a bowl of sugar. I have no idea if this treat is common amongst fellow cultivators of rhubarb, but if you’ve never tried it I suggest you give it a whirl. You won’t be sorry… unless you don’t like rhubarb, in which case I can’t help you.

There is a reason strawberries and rhubarb were made for each other. Rhubarb can be quite tart and strawberries have a more pronounced sweet flavor that keeps you from puckering as you eat a slice of rhubarb pie. Plus they look so pretty cuddling up next to one another. I’ve heard pink and red clash but good food breaks all the rules.

The pastry is all butter. I don’t often mess around with shortening. I just don’t like the taste. Butter is a little more difficult to work with than shortening but it improves the flavor and color of the finished pastry.
I’ve also made an odd addition to the pastry. One I’m sure your grandmother would never have thought to add… unless she had a drinking problem.
Great! Now I sound like I have a drinking problem… I don’t!
You believe me right?
*hick

Vodka is the mysterious ingredient and no you can’t taste it, but if you want to chase a slice of pie with a martini I won’t tell anybody.

Liquid brings the pastry together and makes it workable, but add too much and you can be left with a chewy crust rather than a flakey one. Vodka evaporates faster than water meaning the liquid you added to form the pastry quickly bakes off in the oven leaving you with a dry flakey crust with no excess moisture.
Phew! Thank goodness.

It important to remember fresh fruit often contains more moisture than it’s frozen counterparts so, if you’re using fresh up the amount of flour you use in the filling to thicken it. The pictured pie turned out a touch too watery. I normally can’t get fresh rhubarb, because I have a nasty habit of craving it when it’s not in season, so because it had been a while since I’d worked with fresh rhubarb I forgot and failedto follow my own advice. But you won’t make the same mistake will you.

You may be wondering where the pictures of the finished product are… well, I got distracted and out numbered by my wild but adorable little cousins while the pie was baking. When I returned I found that my family was kind enough to remove the pie from the oven… and eat it!
The pie was gone before I could sneak a piece or a shot of my gorgeous pie. Well family, I hope you all burned the roof of your mouth, because I’m out a money shot!

Anyway, follow the recipe and I can guarantee this pie will be beautiful inside and out. Indulge in this classic and take full advantage of rhubarb season, because there really are a million uses for this gorgeous ingredient, like rhubarb compote on pancakes…

You’ll have to excuse me I have urgent business in my kitchen I must attend to.
All Butter Pastry:
2 ½ cup pastry flour (or all-purpose), sifted
1 cup unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1 tsp salt
¼ cup cold water
¼ cup cold vodka
Zest of one lime

1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
¾ cups white sugar
4 tbsp all purpose flour (use 2tbsp for frozen fruit)
Juice of one lime
Garnish:
1 large egg, beaten
Coarse sugar for sprinkling
Directions:
Preheat oven to 425°
Sift together flour and salt in a food processer or large bowl.
Cut butter into the flour mixture using a food processor and a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse meal.
Add water and vodka and mix thoroughly until the mixture forms a ball.
Remove the dough from the bowl and cut in half.
Flatten each half into discs, wrap and refrigerate for half an hour.
While the dough is chilling, place filling ingredients in a large bowl and stir to combine. Set aside.
When ready to roll out place discs on the counter and let rest for fifteen minutes.
Place one disc on a well-flour counter top or marble slab.
Using a well-floured rolling pin roll the dough out from the middle out avoiding the edges.
Transfer to a 9-inch pie plate.
Pour filling into pastry shell and dot with additional butter.
Roll out the second disc and cut into strips (if making a lattice top as pictured).
Weave the strips of pastry over the filling can trim and crimp the edges of the pastry.
Brush with egg and sprinkle with sugar.
Fit tin foil around the edges of the crust and place in the preheated oven.
Bake for 35 minutes. Remove the tin foil and back for an additional fifteen minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
