Pump up the volume

With all of the Fall ’12 trends that I’ve talked about thus far, there is one that I’ve completely overlooked – the voluminous/oversized trend.  To be completely honest, I wasn’t a fan at first.  But after taking a closer look, I can appreciate the tailored, menswear inspired looks – which remind me of the 80’s, but with an edgy and modern look.  Designers such as Stella McCartney, Celine, and Balenciaga are just a few designers that have supersized their Fall 2012 collections.

Transforming runway trends into everyday wear can be a little challenging, but take a peek at how some of these fashion forward ladies are rocking this Fall’s voluminous trend – it just might inspire you to go out and buy a slouchy pair of trousers or an oversized coat.

The voluminous trend can be especially tricky – if the proportions aren’t right, you will end up looking frumpy.  Opt for an oversized coat and pair with ultra skinny denim or a pencil skirt for a minimal take on the trend.  Another great option for easing your way into this trend would be a pair of slouchy trousers paired with your favorite v-neck and a killer heel.  Keep your overall look clean and simple – you’ll find how comfortable and easy it is to pull off one of Fall’s hottest trends!

Buckets of rain

As San Francisco had it’s first taste of rain for the season (with many more gloomy days ahead), I was thrilled to see envy-worthy street styles all over the city today!

The look of the day: simple pieces mixed with the best of Fall 2012 – knee high riding boots, cozy cable knits, and belted trench coats (just to name a few).

I’ve created a few rainy weather looks, that will inspire you to trade your rain slicker and gaudy rain boots for something a little more functional and yes, fashion forward.

Cape style jackets are great for rainy weather – pair with ultra skinny denim, weather proof boots and leather gloves for a chic, city look.

A belted coat with a cloak-like hood is a must for those windy/rainy days.  This style of jacket can be dressed up, or in this case – looks very cool when paired with basic jeans and t-shirt.

A knee-length, fur trimmed jacket is just what you need for adding sophistication to any outfit.  Pair with a pencil skirt and close-toe pumps for an ultra glam look.  Just don’t forget your umbrella – you don’t want to mess up that hair!

A cinched waist, military style jacket is perfect for a rainy afternoon.  Pair with a mini dress, tights and weather proof ankle boots for an edgy, yet girlie look.

Just because there is rain in the forecast, that doesn’t mean you need to give up your sense of style.  Here are a few pieces to look for this Fall: durable boots, weatherproof spray, neutral colored galoshes, jacket with a hood, and a good umbrella.

Get Drop Dead Gorgeous

On HBO’s True Blood, things may be a bit weird down in Bon Temps and seem to be getting weirder.  With everything at stake, the ladies still manage to look gorgeous.  This Halloween, whether you choose to be Sookie or Pam, human or vampire, keep the costume simple and the makeup on point for that drop dead gorgeous appeal.

If you want to be everyone’s favorite Bon Temps’ girl from Merlotte’s, Sookie, don her t-shirt and apron, and you’ll have your wardrobe set.

Or play the fangtalicious heartbreaker Pam.  Sport a busty top or her not so vampy Cat and Flower Sweatshirt  and play up her sensual nature.

For Sookie, stick to neutrals, pinks and warm tones.  For Pam, go for dark, vampier shades.  The secret is to amp up that unmistakable gorgeous factor depending on your character.

Made in collaboration with beauty standards like Tarte and Deborah Lippmann, try the Forsaken Inspired by True Blood Beauty line for the Halloween party and any other day you just want to feel fabulous and irresistible.

  • Dust your complexion for a silken glow
  • Moisturize for the fang-talizing touch
  • Spritz on a sensuous smoldering scent
  • Don’t forget the perfect lacquered nail.  For Sookie’s innocent look, go for subtle.  For Pam, vamp it up with drop dead gorgeous shades
  • And don’t forget about making those lips irresistible.   For either human or vamp, all ladies can appreciate this night out nail/lip duo.

All dolled up, you’re ready to get out there, break some hearts with your fang-talizing beauty that keeps them wanting more.

Have a Fangtas-tic House Party

Get inspired by HBO’s series True Blood and bring the dynamic characters to life by hosting a Fangtas-tic Halloween house party.  In the town of Bon Temps, vampires come back from the dead to live among humans.  Is the synthetic blood that makes it possible too good to be true?  Find out at your shindig – there are sure to be some thrills and chills.

So how will you pull off a macabre party?  With a few tweaks, your home can easily be converted to the Fangtasia Bar, where vampires and humans mingle.   Life at Bon Temps begins at night, so the key is setting a sinister ambiance.  Block out the light with black drapes.   Opt for candles and True Blood string lights, which come with red bulbs.   Cover tabletops and chairs with red textiles like velvet.   Put on the original score, prepare garlic free foods (lest you offend all the vampires) and quench their thirst with enough True Blood beverage warmed to 98.6 degrees.  Don’t forget to make it last from dusk till dawn.   Finally, invite friends over donned in killer costumes, of course.

Party Planning Checklist:

Invitations: Make your own or use these HBO invites and set the tone

Tunes: Soundtrack and Original Score

Visual Stimulation: Play Season 1 on mute in the background

Refreshments: Serve up True Blood Bloody Mary drinks from the True Blood cookbook and use True Blood approved drinkware

Food:  From Bon Temps Bloody Marys to Up in Arms Biscuits and Gravy, make some fang watering bites sure to please.

Scent: Fill up the house with the aroma of Forsaken True Blood Candle and Diffuser

Tune-in to Fall 2012

As you’re out there shopping this Fall, you’re going to see tons of new styles – eye catching fabrics, futuristic silhouettes, and bold prints.  But how do you determine which pieces are worth investing in and which styles are just seasonal trends.

Okay, so leather isn’t a “new” trend.  But this Fall, we’re seeing leather everywhere – in the most modern ways and with a very luxe look.

Velvet reminds me of being a kid during the Holiday’s (all of my Christmas dresses were velvet).  But this Fall, opt for velvet accessories in deep navy or burgundy hues for a grown-up, ladylike look.

Yes, bedazzling is for children and embellishments are for adults.  There is a huge difference!  This Fall, look for classic silhouettes that have minimal embellishments or studs – for a girlie twist, and a little edge.

The military trend has been a Fall favorite for quite a few seasons now.  But this Fall, update the military look by wearing streamlined pieces in neutral tones for a sophisticated take on the trend.

Beware of Dog

He’s no Snoopy, Charlie Brown.  In FX’s hit series Wilfred, Ryan (Elijah Wood) thinks he sees a bong-ripping, beer-chugging potty mouthed Australian guy in a dog suit but everyone else sees a cute, furry dog.

Get into the Wilfred character and costume and you just might be the hit of the party this Halloween (or at least avoid the doghouse).

In the officially licensed Wilfred Dog costume, you’ll be certified to mentor depressives in your darkly comic and totally unsavory canine ways. If you want to complete the Wilfred look, opt for FX’s Deluxe Wilfred Costume Kit. It comes with a toy cigarette and black nose paint. You too can pretend to be Ryan’s best (and worst?) friend.  But remember: beware of dog – hijinks will ensue!

Overdue October 2012 Playlist

I got a late start on compiling my trending music list this month. I was excited to hear that some of my all time favorite bands (Dinosaur Jr., Band of Horses, Frightened Rabbit, The XX, and Bloc Party) recently released new albums — but I was underwhelmed when I listened to them. Huge bummer. Additionally, I had been seeing Divine Fits pop up here and there on playlists that I never listed to. For some reason I was envisioning them as a country band. Then, while listening to Sound Opinions I learned the band consists of Britt Daniel of Spoon (another all time favorite), along with Dan Boeckner and Sam Brown. I’m totally obsessed with them right now.

Enjoy!

Décor more

Every once and a while I go through phases where I’m addicted to looking at home decor magazines and home decor websites – hoping to find some inspiration to spruce up my home.

For many years, I’ve had a thing for dimly lit spaces, oversized furniture, and darker hues.  But lately I’ve been drawn to muted walls with vibrant pops of color, mismatched furniture mixed with Scandinavian minimalism – making my current apartment not that appealing to me.

While I have some great end tables, lamps and vintage artwork – my apartment is definitely lacking a sense of overall style.  But I’m hoping with just a few updated pieces, I can create a cozy oasis just in time for the cooler months (when most of my time is spent at home).

Instead of buying a whole new set of furniture – try rearranging your space, paint a wall or a door, opt for new curtains or add some interesting pops of color.  Stop by a local flea market for some great accent pieces – you’ll be sure to find mirrors, frames, end tables and kitschy items (for that much needed touch of personality).  Also, be sure to visit websites like, Pinterest and Decor8 for some inspiration and easy DIY projects.

Just be sure you know the overall look you’re going for and with just a few easy fixes – voilà – you’re home will feel fresh and new!
