Dress Like Sheldon Cooper

It’s never too early to think about Halloween! Celebrate the enthusiastic obsessions that define geekiness this Halloween. Pull off the girl version of Sheldon Cooper, America’s favorite super-geek character from CBS’s Big Bang Theory.  Sheldon’s look is geeky, clever, and cute enough to show you have a great eye for style, and are willing to push boundaries on makes a great outfit!

Interpreting the character of Sheldon will help you create the perfect costume. Here are some things you should keep in mind while compiling the costume:

  • He’s a Caltech theoretical physicist
  • He’s into science, math, and history
  • He lives with his colleague and best friend, Leonard Hofstadter
  • He loves routines, and playing by the rules
  • He’s socially awkward
  • He’s vocal about his beyond-genius intelligence level
  • He’s also idiosyncratic and germaphobic

Here are some of Sheldon’s classic looks.

While Sheldon doesn’t care about fashion, he loves graphic t-shirts and plaid. He layers a lot! Luckily pattern mixing is trendy, so if you dress like Sheldon you will be on trend! Here is my recommendation on pieces that would work together to create to ultimate Sheldon look. Feel free to use the images above as inspiration for your own Sheldon costume!

Shades of the season

As the Fall and Winter months approach us, we tend to gravitate towards the darker pieces in our closets.  We can’t help it!  As soon as the weather starts to cool, retailers start to display those darker hues that get us excited for the gloomy months ahead.  It’s just the way the fashion world works!

While we’re still going to see tons of deep/dark colors this Fall – we’re also going to see our favorite darker hues, but with a twist.

Crimson – a great way to add a bit of color without going overboard.  Accessories in this shade are nonchalant, but very sexy.

Ultramarine – such a bright and bold color, but perfect for adding a little playfulness to any outfit.  Paint your nails this color for a subtle take on the trend.

Heliotrope – surprisingly a very versatile color that looks great on any skin tone or hair color.  Wear this bold tone if you’re ready to make a statement this Fall.

Titanium – this shade is a no-brainer for Fall.  Instead of wearing black this year, opt for a worn-out version of our favorite Fall/Winter hue.

Fall 2012’s must-have accessory

Fall 2012 is all about tailored, ladylike silhouettes.  But if you’re anything like me, a closet full of slouchy sweaters and oversized tops doesn’t quite fit the bill.  But before heading out and buying a new wardrobe, take some notes from some of our favorite Fall 2012 runway looks.

Acne, DKNY, Givenchy, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Prada, Rag & Bone

When you’re trying to achieve a tailored look on the fly this Fall – opt for one of the seasons hottest accessories – the belt – it’s as simple as that!  Talk about an easy way to elevate an outfit, shrink your waist and tailor your clothes.

Add a skinny neon belt to your basic denim – it’ll add just the right amount of color.

Instead of hiding that belt under your jacket, cinch the waist of a boxy jacket for a sophisticated evening look.

Take your basic cardigan out on the town – wear a metallic belt over the cardigan for a slightly glamorous look.

Add a little bit of toughness to a frilly garment – this creates an edgy, yet ladylike look.

4 standout pieces to transition into Fall

Fashion trends are always changing and evolving.  Unless you are completely obsessed with fashion (and have a money tree in your backyard), it’s hard to keep up with the latest trends of the season.  Which is why I have decided to choose some of my favorite Fall trends and start incorporating them into my wardrobe now.
Ivory trousers

An ivory pant is great for Summer – classic and clean.  But for Fall, pair an ivory pant with cozy layers for a modern, city look.

Berry colored blazer

The berry shade adds a nice pop of color to any look – this color can be dressed down for those casual Summer afternoons or dressed up for the upcoming Fall cocktail parties.

Sporty sneakers

Hidden wedge sneakers are perfect for elongating those legs – denim and bold accessories are a great match for sporty sneakers – casual, yet urban chic.

Floral print dress

Floral print is absolutely perfect for this Summer – especially when worn with bright flats and denim.  For Fall, add a pair of suede ankle boots and a warm sweater for a girlie, yet on-trend look.

Color Blocking – The New Rules On How To Dress Loud

Summer is prime time for exciting bursts of color, fusing shades and explosive floral – and that’s just on your clothes! A trend that keeps coming back and only seems to get brighter and bolder is color blocking. So whether it’s petite, casual, formal or plus size clothing you’re after, read on to find out how to make colour blocking work for you.

There’s been a lot of talk about this trend adopting an ‘anything goes’ attitude, with no rules. There shouldn’t be an absolute carte blanche for colour blocking; otherwise you’ll just look like you’ve got dressed in the dark!

Thankfully, we’re here to tell you how to get it right!

How many colors?

Ok ladies. First up there is a limit to how many colors can be worn at once. Four or more different colors worn at once will make you look like a walking rainbow, which is never a good look. The basic idea is to mix colors that are not under one tone. If you’re new to color blocking and feel a bit nervous, try limiting your outfit to under two colors at first, and then build up to three when you get the hang of it.

Setting the tone

Color blocking in summer 2012 is not only about different tones but also totally different ones – think mixing pastels and neon, such as mint and lime, and you’ll be right on trend.

Work with solid colored pieces

DON’T try and add prints and frills to your color blocked outfits (to start), what you really want to do is emphasise the bold, striking colors of the outfit, and so don’t want anything to distract the eyes. Texture is firm friend of color blockers. Texture is preferred over prints because it will give your outfit dimension. For example, a mint chiffon blouse with lime skinny denim jeans would look great.

Accessories

When accessorising your outfit don’t wear jewelry that’s of the same shade as your outfit. We’d stick to nude tones, like black and white, and it won’t detract from your outfit.

Shades we love

If you’re still stuck for inspiration, bear these combos in mind when next perusing the high-street:

Tangerine and candy-floss pink with ice cool beige.

Slate grey with citrus, coral, fuchsia and electric blue.

Finally… be confident! Color blocking is all about being daring and looking vivid, so don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd!

1 dress, 4 looks

Warmer weather, longer days, and weekends of weddings – yes, it is Summer but it is also Wedding Season!
The easy part is done – we’ve sent back our RSVP’s – now it’s time to make travel plans, buy wedding gifts and most importantly, figure out what to wear to all of these weddings.

Ladies, we feel your pain – we know that attending multiple weddings in a short period of time can be exhausting (especially on the wallet).  But we here at StyleBust say that it’s okay to find one killer dress and wear it to all of the Weddings that are creeping up on you – and save you a pretty penny while doing so!
This dress is perfect for attending all sorts of weddings – from a formal wedding to a gathering on the beach.  The neutral tone pairs nicely with either black or brown – making it extremely versatile.  The weight of the fabric is perfect for a Summer Wedding – very romantic and elegant.

This is a great look for a wedding taking place in a church or hotel.  The look is clean and classic – black paired with this peach dress creates a sophisticated, but very modern look.

A backyard or beach side wedding are both great places to add some unexpected color and playfulness.  The woven sandals paired with colorful accessories creates a youthful and charming look.

Invited to a nighttime wedding soiree?  This is the perfect place to bring out your cocktail attire – now is the time to pair the peach dress with sequins and patten leather for a chic, nighttime look.

This is a perfect look for a formal wedding, held at a country club or resort.  Instead of adding pops of color, opt for accessories that sparkle – which will create an elegant, yet polished look.

London Calling

With just two weeks until the Olympics begin in London, I’m as giddy as the next gal to witness magnificent athletic talent from around the world competing in the 2012 Games and I look forward to the spectacle just as much as the sports.

Details of the Opening Ceremony have been unveiled and while it purports to be markedly modest compared to Beijing’s 2008 (who would want to compete?), I am hopeful and intrigued to watch the British festivities celebrated in their characteristic style of non-fussiness.

British film director Danny Boyle acknowledges he won’t be able to please all tastes. Instead he’s going for “green and pleasant.”

Boyle will transform the Olympic Stadium into the mythical British countryside complete with meadows, maypoles, picnicking families, toiling farmers, cricketers on the village green showing us the “isle of wonder” with the intention of conveying the English sense of humor a la Monty Python.

I welcome the humor, the pleasantries and theatrics of it all. And what would the show be without costume. Have you seen Stella McCartney’s official Team GB kit?

This week, Team USA unveiled their ceremony parade outfits made by Ralph Lauren. The style was inspired by the 1948 Games, which is the last time that American competed in England.

Nike will supply competition uniforms for the U.S. and outfits for the medal stand. For the opening and closing ceremony attire, apparently, Ralph Lauren Company has officially outfitted Team USA for the last three games.

Take a look at the US uniforms through the years. Call me a critic, but I think there’s an excellent opportunity for CFDA to institute a fashion competition to spotlight fresh new American talent.

NY Designer Opening Ceremony recently debuted their Olympic Games inspired collection, and while probably better suited for sporting around the Olympic Village, I am thoroughly enjoying their playful sporty designs made in collaboration with Adidas Originals.

Opening Ceremony makes a cheeky nod to athletic style that still maintains the designer’s characteristically urban aesthetic. I want those hi-tops with hidden wedges!

Check out the full collection of neoprene styles with bold prints here.

Here’s hoping that we’ll be passing the fashion baton (ahem) torch to outfit us at the next games come Rio! Until then, let’s go team USA!

Summer lovin’

As summer kicks into full gear, I am pleased to see some of my favorite Summer 2012 trends come out to play.  This seasons hottest trends can be found everywhere, from nail polish to handbags – you’ll be sure to find something that keeps you looking cool all summer long!

Blair from Atlantic-Pacific mixes and matches pastel hues perfectly.  Pastels can be dressed up or dressed down, which makes these pretty pieces a staple in your summer wardrobe.

Liz from Late Afternoon blog has a feminine, bohemian look going on.  Try not to over accessorize your lace pieces – minimal, neutral tones look great with lace and play up the ‘girlieness’ of this favorite summertime trend.

As we all know denim is big year round, but Julie of Sincerely, Jules does it right – light washed denim creates a laid back, nonchalant look.  Perfect for those lazy days of summer.
