Crackle and Pure Ice Duo

I always enjoy trying out new products and when it comes to nail polish, I get giddy with the anticipation. I recently checked out Pure Ice nail polish.

pure_ice_nail

This brand is part of Bari Cosmetics, a company that brings us cosmetics that are not tested on animals as well as free of formaldehyde tolune, or DBP. I had a chance to try out their Winter Crackle & Pure Ice Duo (green with silver crackle) and the colors are just gorgeous!

First I put on a base coat and then 2 coats of the Metallic Green color, which looks awesome just by itself.

pure_ice_nails

Then I added a thin layer of the Silver Crackle and a top coat.

The end result was a great looking color which lasted without any chipping for three days, and I’m sure it would have lasted longer, but I have ADD when it comes to nail polish and I wanted to try out a water marble techique. Which I did, using the green nail polish as one of the colors, it looks so cool!

You can purchase Pure Ice at Walmart and Walgreens or directly at Bari Cosmetics site. A high quality product at a very affordable price.

Coming soon Pure Ice will be launching Vinyl Remix:

DJ-Inspired collection from Pure Ice that has 6 matte duos. You can create different patterns by swirling your brush stroke. It’s a color remix!

Can’t wait to try it!

Sporting Spring 2012 trends

Over the past several months I have been writing about Spring trends – trends that I can see myself or my friends actually wearing (like pastels and color blocking).  But recently I have been drawn to this Spring’s “sporty chic” trend – a trend that seems to be a little over-the-top, but yet very minimal.

Victoria Beckham Spring 2012

Every year there is some sort of “sporty” trend hitting the runways, last year we were introduced to a tomboy look – slouchy sweatshirts, buckles and toggles, but this season it’s more about poised femininity, sleek and functional designs.  Think sport elements mixed with tailoring, asymmetrical straps, and luxurious fabrics in sporty cuts (i.e. racerbacks).

Alexander Wang Spring 2012

Cythnia Rowley Spring 2012, Nicole Miller Spring 2012

Helmut Lang Spring 2012

Prabal Gurung Spring 2012

So, you may be wondering how you can actually make this trend work and not look like you just walked out of the gym.

Here are a few ways to work the “sporty” trend into your Spring wardrobe:

1. Look for tank tops with asymmetrical straps in thin, lightweight material.  These are great for layering under a tailored blazer.

2. Look for jackets made of perforated leather or mesh.  Pair with slim trousers or your favorite skinny denim.

3. Look for tops or dresses with thick elastic straps, exposed zippers and buckles.  And pair with an edgy shoe (like a metallic-toe pump).

Trendy Strollers For Mom

Away from celebrity nights out on the red carpet, even the rich and famous have to admit that life as a mom means dressing like a mom – most of the time! Dannii Minogue has admitted that life with her toddler Ethan has seen her high-fashion threads swapped for T-shirts and sneakers. “I can’t just totter around in heels carrying a 30lb baby,” she admitted to Glamour magazine. Flats, she claims, are the only footwear option when you have to “wrestle a stroller”.

Looking good through the baby years:

With days in the sandpit, naps and liquidized food all playing their part in the life of any new parent, dressing up in dry-clean only designer chic just doesn’t make sense. But that doesn’t mean you can’t look great when you’re out and about with our little ones.

In recent years, brands like bugaboo and Italian family company Mamas & Papas have created a fleet of pushchairs, prams and strollers that will light up any outfit, jazzing up even the most comfortable of jeggings and sweatshirts.

3 eye-catching strollers under $600:

1. From-birth comfort: Mamas & Papas Sola Pushchair, $570. Saving you the hassle of having to replace your pram with a buggy as your baby grows, this pushchair is a worthwhile investment and ideal for newborns and sleepy three-year-olds alike. You can even add a matching carrycot or infant carrier to create an interchangeable travel system. Voted a Which? Best Buy for 2011, the Sola comes in a rainbow of gorgeous fabric options, allowing you to mix and match your buggy with a selection of footmuffs, parasols and changing bags.

2. Nippy, lightweight style: Cosatto Swift Lite Supa Stroller, $224. In a contrasting black and bright, flower design, the Swift is the perfect option for those on the move, helping you to navigate public transport with your baby in one hand and your buggy in the other. At a skimpy 6.5kgs it’s easy to carry and can handle tight corners at the shops, whilst keeping even the tiniest of newborns safe and comfortable.

3. Compact three-wheeler: Quinny Zapp Xtra, $299. When the Quinny first launched it was an instant hit with parents who wanted the style of a three-wheeler without the handling of a truck! Uniquely shaped to suit tight spaces when open, the Quinny will fit into the smallest of car boots when folded, making it perfect for life around town and family weekends away.

Nail Polish for Spring / Summer 2012

Here we are, yummy new colors ready for the season. The general trend is bright, neon colors, except for Orly which brings a very subtle pastel collection. Nothing glittery, but at least I spotted several darker colors for the goth girl in me!

American Top 12

The Top 12… er, scratch that, Top 11 (more on this later) Idol contestants picked songs from their birth year for the show this week.  This is one of the few themes that I don’t mind because I think it’s a great way to introduce them and show a side of their personal life.  It also lets the contestants choose from a wide variety of genres.  So it’s a great opportunity to make song choices that fit their voices and that they will enjoy performing.  Not all take advantage of this chance, as we saw tonight many of them really struggled to find a song that excited them.  Which is perplexing to me.  If I were preparing to audition for American Idol I would be studying so much music and getting familiar with categories that I’m likely to come across.  But nevertheless you still have contestants (cough DeAndre) that essentially waste this week by doing safe songs that they are clearly not familiar with therefore end up looking very unenthused about even being on the stage.  But you can see for yourself, I stayed awake long enough that I have linked the videos of the performances to each of their names (unfortunately with the exception of Hollie, not sure why but I spent a lot of time digging and came up empty handed).

So the show kicks off with my man Phillip Phillips who is just too stinking charming, even as he’s passing kidney stones and needing surgery.  The song he did is originally an Otis Redding song, remade by the Black Crowes which apparently qualifies it as a song made in his birth year.  I won’t argue, it was a good fit for him.  He stepped out without his guitar and unlike moments with Paul McDonald last year, it wasn’t painful to watch.  This kid has it going on.  I was disappointed that he went first because it made the rest of the show seem like a chore to get through.

Jessica Sanchez – It’s certainly hard to believe that this girl is 16 years old.  She has a lot of swagger when she’s up on stage.  She’s extremely confident in what she’s doing.  I like that the judges gave her constructive criticism.  But I disagree when Steven says she shouldn’t stray far from ballads.  I didn’t mind the song choice of “Turn The Beat Around,” in fact I have never liked that song but she had my attention throughout and her delivery made me actually appreciate certain aspects of the arrangement of that song.  I like to see the contestants have fun, and to hear ballads week after week is borrrring!

Heejun Han – Oh dear, I believe this boy has planted himself in the bottom 3 this week with the subpar performance of Richard Marx “Right Here Waiting.”  It wasn’t terrible but it definitely wasn’t good either.  I haven’t decided yet if him announcing that his girlfriend was there was a sweet gesture or one that irritated me.  With the extent of my experience with young boy bands, I’m a strong believer in keeping the girlfriend out of the spotlight, haha!  Anyway I want to hear Heejun sing something in Korean.

Elise Testone – Whoa, biggest shocker of the night.  I threatened to move out of the country last week if she wasn’t the bottom girl.  And well, she was the bottom girl but she wasn’t eliminated & thank goodness because then we wouldn’t of been able to see such a dope performance from her.  I think she would be great doing a Joss Stone sounding record.  And last week is a perfect example why I hate theme weeks with artists like Whitney Houston.  Elise got buried last week, but definitely crawled up out of the hole for me with this rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “Lets Stay Together.”  It was like watching an entirely different performer.

DeAndre Brackensick – Oh what does this young boy know about ‘Endless Love?’  I just don’t know about the song.  Song choice is crucial for everyone but I think even more for him because his voice really relies heavily on emotion.  His falsetto you can feel in your bones when it’s genuine and when it’s not it is very anti-climatic and almost turns you off.

Shannon Magrane – I’m so dang proud of her for coming back this week and doing a Mariah Carey song.  She didn’t shy away from taking on a song with a big voice.  She did a great cover of ‘One Sweet Day.’  And fun fact about Shannon, her dad Joe played for the Cardinals and is from my home state.  I dig people from Iowa.

Colton Dixon – I didn’t know that White Lion song but I didn’t even care.  Steven Tyler seemed a bit crabby this evening.  He just straight up didn’t like the performance.  I wonder if it was because he was the only one who had heard the song prior to Colton’s version.  For me, there was nothing wrong with that performance.

Erika Van Pelt -ugh, girl… Bryan Adams, ‘Heaven’… really?  I hate this song.  Not sure why, never liked DJ Sammy’s techno version of it either.  There is not a singer in the world that could perform this in any way, shape, or form and make me like it.  I can’t even fairly make comments on her performance because I just plain don’t like it.

Jermaine Jones – So, search American Idol this week and most of what you will get is this guys name.  He’s getting all kinds of publicity for his 4 outstanding warrants and is it just me or is this slightly insane?  How does something like this get past the producers?  I was concerned that the show was airing the conversation where he is told he is no longer in the competition, it really runs on a fine line of bad taste to air that and could be looked at as a cheap way to get viewers to tune in.  And I think it’s shady that they brought this contestant back and just now found out about the warrants for his arrest.  So I’m not saying this all hasn’t been done for publicity however, I thought it was handled fantastically as far as what was aired.  And for the record, I’m not buying that all he did was fall down a flight of stairs and subsequently felt the need to give the police a fake name.  Onwards and upwards though, we are officially down to our Top 11.

Skylar Laine – “Love Sneaking Up On You” is not my favorite Bonnie Raitt song but in general the vibe fit Skylar really well.  She has the perfect blend of attitude and soul that she puts into all her performances.  She’s very entertaining to me.

Joshua Ledet – Uh hello!?  This cover of Michael Bolton “When a Man Loves a Woman” was awesome!  One of the few times I’ve seen the judges get out of their chairs for an actual good reason.  He blew me away, it was very cool to see.

Hollie Cavanaugh – I’m not a huge fan of this Celine Dion song.  It’s obvious that the girl can sing her butt off on any song.  She’s certainly impressive.  I thought her parents were adorable and I enjoyed seeing a softer side of her in the pre-performance interview.  I’m not sure who is styling her on the show but I am not a fan at all.  Tonight’s dress was ugly.

My bottom 3 prediction: Erika, Heejun & I guess DeAndre.  This week is slightly difficult to predict because overall I feel indifferent with just about all of the performances.  The 3 must see performances from this week are Elise, Joshua and for the last you can make the decision: Hollie, if you want to hear a power ballad, Phillip Phillips if you want to be entertained.

Spring 2012 trends meet the music

Let the festivities begin!  I’m not talking about St. Patrick’s day here (sorry, to all of you Irish readers – although I hope you have a fun weekend).  I’m talking about the music festival season – the time of year when Spring trends come out to play.  It’s the time of year when every fashion website shows us what our favorite festival goers are wearing – i.e. Kate Bosworth and her Isabel Marant ankle boots and Alexa Chung wearing an army jacket.  Laid-back trends that were spotted at music festivals, have made it to the big leagues!

Although music festivals have a style of their own – bohemian and southwest prints often come to mind, maybe (just maybe) this year we’ll see some of our favorite runway trends in the lineup (color blocking, bold florals, and pastels).

Check out some “Festival Friendly” shopping sites like; Madewell, Need Supply, Bona Drag and Pixie Market for some Spring fashion inspiration.

Keep your eyes peeled for some Spring trends at these upcoming festivals – SXSW in Austin, TX, Coachella in Indio, CA and Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN.

My CAN CAN Juice Cleanse Experience

image of can can cleanse

Are you irritable? Feeling sluggish? Bloated? I was.  And I had been reading up on the benefits of juice cleanses, and felt it might make me feel better. So I decided to take the plunge! I did the 3-day CAN CAN cleanse last week.  My only other experience with a cleanse was the Master Cleanse, which I did back in 2007 for 4 days (I was hoping for 10 days, but I got too hungry). The CAN CAN cleanse is SO much better.

The CAN CAN Cleanse was developed by local nutritionist and restaurant industry vet Teresa Piro. The cleanses are designed to help you “check in” with your body and get back on track. Each day, you get eight old-school mason jars of seasonal beverages two fruit juices, two veggie juices, and two herbal teas, nut milk, and soup. Making it all easier to swallow, Piro gives you detailed instructions on prepping your body, and getting back to solid food after the cleanse is complete. I also appreciated Teresa’s list of acceptable snacks. She is realistic and knows that beginning cleansers may feel the urge to have something to chew so she provides a short list of healthy acceptable snacks should one absolutely need to have a bite.

Insights by day:

On day one I woke up and had the first of 8 daily 12 oz. mixes. This was the Lemon Ginger Juice. This was my least favorite of all drinks, mainly because it includes lots of cayenne which reminds me of the Master Cleanse (the worst cleanse in history). By lunchtime I was about to start my fourth drink of the day. This drink is actually a soup, which came at the perfect time because I was longing for something with more substance. This soup kept me feeling full for hours. In the evening I got a headache. I’m used to them though because I’m very inconsistent with my coffee intake, so the headache wasn’t anything out of the ordinary for me. Later that night I got to drink the nut milk, which tastes better than dessert. I wish the nut milk came in a 24 oz. jar; it was THAT amazing.

image of CAN CAN Juices

Image of four daytime drinks. The Winter Orange Soup is the third item shown.

Day two was a breeze. I was so busy at work, I didn’t have a chance to realize I was on a juice cleanse. By evening I fell very behind the cleanse schedule due to meetings. That sucked big time! I got so hungry I felt like I could vomit (of course this was my own fault, not the cleanses). But as soon as I gulped down my next juice I was as good as new.

Day three was the most challenging for me. I got really hungry around lunchtime and even after having the soup I wanted more food. I drank lots of water (both hot and cold) to get me through the afternoon. By the time I had my dinner drink I felt fantastic again. And of course I savored every sip of my last nut milk drink since it was by far my favorite drink.

Summary:

Overall, I thought this cleanse was fairly easy for someone like me who hasn’t cleansed in years. The juices, teas and soup are delicious and fresh. During the cleanse I did feel better and sleep better. Oh, and I did lose 5 lbs! I think ridding my body of bad foods for three days and starting new is a great way to kick start healthy eating habits. I think each time I fall of the horse I’ll turn to CAN CAN to help me get back on!

Do your body a favor and CAN CAN — it’ll thank you.

FDA Report: Lead Levels on Lipstick Study

A new report came out from The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning lead content on many brands of lipsticks currently on the market. This report is very troubling since it contains 400 different lipsticks from brands such as Maybelline, Cover Girl, NARS, Avon, L’Oreal, Burt’s Bees, and  many others.

In spite of the findings the FDA does not consider the lead levels they found to be unsafe.

Is there a safety concern about the lead levels FDA found on lipsticks?

No. We have assessed the potential for harm to consumers from the use of lipstick containing lead at the levels found in both rounds of testing. Lipstick, as a product intended for topical use with limited absorption, is ingested only in very small quantities. We do not consider the lead levels we found in the lipsticks to be a safety concern. The lead levels we found are within the limits recommended by other public health authorities for lead in cosmetics, including lipstick.

What are FDA’s next steps for lead in lipstick?

Although we do not believe that the lead content found in our recent lipstick analyses poses a safety concern, we are evaluating whether there may be a need to recommend an upper limit for lead lipstick in order to further protect the health and welfare of consumers.

This issue is debated between different organizations, while the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is pushing for limits on lead levels, the Personal Care Products Council – a trade group representing the cosmetics industry – agrees with the FDA that the lead levels are not threathening.

Lead is not an ingredient in the formulations, but can be unintentionally added by using color additives approved by the FDA that are mineral-based and may contain trace levels of lead that is naturally found in the soil, water and air.

Looking at the list, red shades are the most likely to contain traces of lead. These are the top 10 brands from the study:

  1. Maybelline Color Sensation in Pink Petal (Lead content: 7.19 ppm)
  2. L’Oreal Colour Riche in Volcanic (Lead content: 7.00 ppm)
  3. NARS Semi-Matte in Red Lizard (Lead content: 4.93 ppm)
  4. Cover Girl Queen Collection Vibrant Hues Color in Ruby Remix (Lead content: 4.92 ppm)
  5. NARS Semi-Matte in Funny Face (Lead content: 4.89)
  6. L’Oreal Colour Rich in Tickled Pink (Lead content: 4.45)
  7. L’Oreal Intensely Moisturizing Lipcolor in Heroic (Lead content: 4.41)
  8. Cover Girl Continuous Color in Warm Brick (Lead content: 4.28)
  9. Maybelline Color Sensational in Mauve Me (Lead content: 4.23)
  10. Stargazer lipstick in shade ”C” (Lead content: 4.12)

Click Here to look at the complete list and see if your lipstick is on it

I checked my own lipsticks against the list and I’m glad to say Illamasqua was not in it since I just love my red lipstick! Click here to check a previous review I made on Illamasqua.
