My Guilty Pleasures
I have so many guilty pleasures. Here’s a collage of them for you!
From top to bottom: every kind of cheese (and butter), every kind of ice cream (including sorbet, frozen yogurt and gelato), sparkling water (any brand will do, or homemade), asics tennis shoe, dark chocolate, every kind of beer, most red wines, naps as often as possible, stripes, and corduroys (in the background).
Gallery of Jewels’ New Union Square Store
Gallery of Jewels is a small local chain of stores that opened 21 years ago, with three locations. Each store is a little gallery filled with artful jewelry. has had eight locations in its history. Gallery of Jewels just opened its newest store at 427 Post St, in the city’s main shopping district of Union Square.
The stores carry over 150 different designers. About half of the pieces sold is made by local designers. Whether you’re looking for bangles, wedding band, modern silver cufflinks for your man, or unique twists on staples like studs and hoop earrings, Gallery of Jewels has something for you. Prices range from $40 to $5,000, with plenty in the $200-$450 range.
Last week, I was treated to a tour of Gallery of Jewels’ new Union Square space, and I must say that the manager Melissa Segura and Diana were very lovely to meet with. Not only are they passionate about jewelry and bringing their customers the best pieces, they’re also great at sharing jewelry information with customers.
Here are some of my favorite pieces from the store:
Stackable rings (that also look fabulous on their own).
Silver ring designed and shaped liked succulents.
Last but not least, a stack of the most unusual gold rings you can find in Union Square.
Unfortunately I missed the opening party this past Saturday, but my pal Joanna Riedel (who happens to be Gallery of Jewels publicist) was able to send me some great photos that I thought I’d share with you!
All photos are courtesy of Gallery of Jewels.
A Habit I Wish I Didn’t Have
Comparing myself to other people. It’s an awful thing to do and an extremely hard thing not to do. But I think all girls learn to compare themselves to others girls in junior high (correct me if I’m wrong). Some girls learn to ditch it, others struggle a little more – I’m the others.
Of course I don’t compare myself to celebrities…but others have compared me to these gals, so it seemed fitting to add them here!
Pre-Fall outfit inspiration
For those of you who live in San Francisco, you know that getting dressed during this time of year can be tricky. Warm days are usually followed by cool evenings.
As excited that I am to be wearing sweaters and scarves, I’ll have to put my cold weather wardrobe on hold for a bit longer.
I have looked to my favorite Personal Style bloggers for some Indian Summer outfit inspiration:
Sincerely Jules, The Golden Diamonds, Karla’s Closet, and Song of Style
And for those chilly evenings, here’s a little something warmer:

Define: Beauty Fashion Show – A Socially Responsible Event
Groundwork Opportunities (GO) is a nonprofit organization that funds income generating projects in the developing world. GO hosts a handful of philanthropic events each year, and last month I had the pleasure of attending their event: Define: Beauty at Madrone Studios in San Francisco. The show featured Bay Area up-and-coming designers Dallas Parke and Sarah Liller along with established fashion names: Retrofit Republic, Cari Borja, Ken Chen, MENK, Kajan Padraig and Daniel Sudar. The collections were gorgeous, and the show (produced by Clarissa Nicosia) was entertaining, but the evening’s goal was much more serious: to raise enough money to fund a sustainable clean water well for over 4,000 people in Tanzania.
The runway show began promptly at 7:30 after cocktail hour with wines from Rock Wall Wine Company, and hors d’oeuvres by Beast and the Hare. The collections looked stunning against the venue’s white interiors. Trendy dresses by Kajan Padraig, chic and girly silhouettes by Sarah Liller, urprisingly interesting gender-bending ensembles from Retrofit Republic and menswear from Daniel Sudar were stand-outs of the evening.
Here are some of our favorite looks from the show. Photography by Jayson Carpenter.

Inspiration for Define: Beauty came to the GO team while working with residents in Moshi, Tanzania to build a sustainable source of clean drinking water. While there, the team was met with unparalleled levels of hospitality and selflessness from a community that existed without everyday resources like clean water. The women of Moshi did not attribute beauty to the latest styles but rather inner strength and contributions to better the community. This experience lead to the concept and creation of first annual event to help impact an insurmountable global water crisis.
Not only was the fashion show itself amazing, Define: Beauty partnered with local sponsors and entrepreneurs that are actively engaged in generating awareness and solutions to environmental issues around the world. Some companies at the event were: Falling Whistles, which fuels awareness for violence in the Congo, and Hydros Bottles, who reduce the amount of plastic in landfills by producing reusable BPA-free water bottles that can filter on the go. Hydros Bottles also shares Groundwork Opportunities’ mission to combat the global water crisis in developing nations and has partnered with Engineers Without Borders to create Operation Hydros, where purchase proceeds go towards providing clean drinking water abroad. Fashion partner, Gilt City San Francisco, has an exclusive e-commerce site where members can access trendy local deals and services. The goodie bags for Press were stocked with all sorts of goodies including a bottle of California white wine from Rock Wall Wine Company, $100 work for hair treatment at CODE Salon!
My Top 3 SF Fashion Designers
Day 16 of the 30 Day Blogging Challenge is about my Top 3 SF Fashion Designers.
This one is tricky because even though I support a lot of local designers by going to their fashion shows and covering the on this website, I still own few garments designed by SF designers.
I’m a huge fan of Kajan Padraig. Cake Carlos and Patrick Steber make up the design duo behind the label. The team met while working under Lily Samii. Not only are their pieces gorgeous, and perfect for every type of event – I also really like their label even more because I know the designers behind the label and really like them. Here’s an interview I did with them earlier this year.
Bacca Da Silva is another local favorite for womenswear – he also does menswear, but I can’t remember if I’ve ever seen it or not. His designs are very cutting edge for SF, he incorporates great prints (in large-scale) and right colors. I think everything Bacca made for his Spring 2012 collection I would love to wear.

I was introduced to Alyssa Nicole and her line during San Francisco Fashion Week 2010 (here’s a link to my review of her collection shown at Fashion Week). She really knows how to make flattering, reasonably priced pieces.
My Current Obsession: Meiko
Oh how do I express my love for Meiko? The editor of Paste magazine, Josh Jackson, saw her perform at Sundance Film Festival in 2007 and declared her a big success story waiting to happen. She first came across my radar when a few of her songs made appearances on some TV shows I watch. Actually by now her music has probably unknowingly made its way to your ears with as many shows she has been featured on in the last couple years. Her name has been floating around the industry for awhile but I wasn’t familiar with her outside of knowing her name until recently. After seeing her perform a couple weeks ago at House of Blues in Chicago, I haven’t been able to get her out of my head.
It has taken me a couple weeks to let Meiko settle into my musical brain in order to write this blog without sounding like a blabbering fool (which is bound to happen anyway). I am really excited about her, and I just can’t help it. So I will take a deep breath, and start from the beginning. I saw Meiko perform twice in Chicago, opening up for Hanson, per usual – as you already know many of my new favorite artists come from Hanson tours. She has already done some tour stints with Brett Dennen (whom I love dearly), Mat Kearney, Joe Purdy, Jewel, Joshua Radin and she was featured on the Hotel Café tour. Upon moving to LA, Meiko began waitressing and performing at Hotel Café. She was able to drop the waitress gig after her song “Reasons To Love You” made its national TV debut on Grey’s Anatomy. She still performs at Hotel Café regularly, so if you’re in the LA area I recommend checking the calendar out.
I think there’s something to be said about a female that writes her own material. And I guess not only writes music but makes songs that are genuine, true to herself, and about something real. I am constantly inquiring the people I meet about what bands or artists they listen to, specifically in the realm of females. I’m always searching for a female musician that makes me feel something. It just doesn’t interest or captivate me to be constantly bombarded with the over-sexualized female pop artists singing about absolutely nothing relevant to the world I live in. I can understand how it can be entertaining to people but where is Stevie Nicks when you need her? I’m not saying that female talent doesn’t exist, rather it’s just not easily discoverable. Music fans want to feel connected, and authentic female artists has been hard to come by. I think that’s why Adele has become so beloved in our industry. I have to believe that with Adele having so much mainstream success it will only help the female singer/songwriter sector grow commercially.
Meiko has a unique, soft, and soulful voice. Her talent stands alone in her music but seeing her live changed everything for me. I definitely think the more she tours and the more people she connects with, the more success she will have. She walks out on stage with minimal make up on, modest clothing, and you instantly feel connected to her normalcy. She is adorable, sweet, and funny. Meiko has a story to tell, she speaks openly about her heartbreaks and triumphs. Her music makes me feel empowered, inspired, and proud to be a woman. She stole my heart and she will win yours over too, guaranteed.
