Divine Rights of Denim exclusively at Forever 21

image of Divine Right of Denim for forever21

Divine Right of Denim may not be considered a premium denim brand to everyone, their jeans range between $75-$100 (expensive? Meh). I think we all can agree that brand seems a bit expensive and out of place for Forever 21, right?

Wrong, as of October 1, 2010 Divine Rights of Denim is selling a maiden collection exclusively at the thousands of Forever 21’s around the globe. The kicker is that this ‘maiden’ collection at Forever 21 retails for only $30 a pair. The collection is rather limited, only featuring three silhouette; skinny, straight, and (of course) jeggings. Each silhouette is sold in a variety of washes.

The brand claims that the quality of the $30 denim at Forever 21 has not been compromised. If this is so, then I think all of us Divine Right of Denim wearing girls have been ripped off (paying $100 a pop) for years. It’s frustrating isn’t it. It seems that as soon as brands hit their climax, they get into this crazy vertical segmentation crap and instantly lose their cool factor with the early adopters. Ladies, we can never stay ahead of the masses these days.

So, I guess if you’re looking for great denim at a bargain you should run off to your local Forever 21 for Divine Rights of Denim. If you buy anything from the collection, please let me know if the quality is that of ‘premium denim’.

Interview with Irene Jung of Irene Jung Jewels

I recently met Irene Jung of Irene Jung Jewels online, and felt her design esthetic and story was something to share with our readers. She has a great eye and the skills to mix vintage pieces together to look, well less vinatge-y. I think it’s an amazing skill that few jewelry designers have. Let’s jump right into the interview!

Style Bust: Irene, how did you get started with your own jewelry line?

I started making jewelry as a hobby in college. Then, as soon as I joined Corporate America, I found myself yearning for a creative outlet. I taught myself how to reupholster and refinish vintage furniture, but once I finished decorating my apartment, I felt unfulfilled once more. I have always loved fashion so as I decided to start designing and making jewelry again and I found myself completely passionate and launched Irene Jung Jewels.

Style Bust: Wow, you’re a total DIYer, that’s awesome! Plus you’re so much more ambitious than me…I feel lazy.

Style Bust: Describe your current collection.

My collection is fun, bold, and glamorous with a vintage yet modern twist. All of the pieces are handmade and one-of-a-kind. They are also extremely versatile. You can wear them with jeans and a tee, a cocktail dress, or even a power suit. They definitely make an outfit.

Style Bust: I have to point out that some of your necklace names are awesome, I really like: Golden Gate, Tequila Sunrise and Top of the Mark

Style Bust: What inspired your current collection?

I was most inspired by old Hollywood glam and all the the vintage goods I see at auctions, consignment stores, and estate sales – everything from furniture and artwork to fashion. Furniture, in particular, has quality of craftsmanship that you can’t find anymore. Everything is mass produced these days and I wanted my collection to be the exact opposite.

Style Bust: You’d probably get along with our guest blogger Beryl pretty well, she loves furniture!

Style Bust: What makes your designs different?

All of my pieces are original. The chance of someone else having the same necklace as you is slim to none. I love combining beautiful vintage brooches and earrings with bright and colorful stones. The combination is stunning!

Style Bust: What big trends are you seeing in Jewelry for the upcoming fashion seasons?

Big, statement jewelry has been a trend for a while and I see it continuing.

Style Bust: How do you suggest shoppers should go about finding good quality jewelry, are there any secrets to shopping you can tell us about?

People assume that new means better quality, but I disagree. If you can’t tell, I’m a sucker for vintage jewelry. Jewelry that incorporates real stone beads tend to be heavier than plastic jewelry, so I can judge by the weight of the stones whether they are real or not.

Style Bust: What do you see in the future for your collection, are there any new directions you’ll be headed in?

I’m looking to incorporate different types of stones and would like to start using metals. Mostly I’m on the hunt for whatever catches my eye and inspires me when I’m looking for vintage items to incorporate into my designs.

Style Bust: Thanks for your insight. Lastly, where can readers find your jewelry?

All of jewelry can be found at http://www.jungjewels.com/. I’m also looking into doing some trunk shows, exhibitions, and fairs in the future. I’m working hard to grow my collection and promise to keep my website updated with my latest creations!

Zara Fall 2010: Pure perfection

I think I could be in love!  If you’ve read anything I’ve posted about Fall 2010, you know that I am head over heels about this season.  I love everything about it; the simplicity, the shapes, the chunky knit sweaters, the floor grazing dresses, and the muted colors (just to name a few).  When I came across the Zara Fall 2010 lookbook, I knew I found my perfect match!

Stylish and cheap finds: I’m settled in, and I love my room!

Hey, guys! Sorry about my long absence, but I’ve been busy with adjusting to classes starting, living off campus for the first time and on my own, and getting settled in. My apartment is really close to campus, and I bike to classes every day (which I find exhilaratingly fun). Things are going pretty smoothly now that me and my roommates have a regular system for groceries, eating, etc. (They’re molecular genetics, microbiology/pre-pharmacy, and chemical engineering majors so our lifestyles and life views differ considerably), and I LOVE living off campus and having my own space.

But let’s talk furniture. It’s what I’m here for. And that’s most important. I go to the Ohio State University–which is considerably out-of-state–so it was logistical puzzle assembling all my room furniture while my roommates simply brought a lot of their stuff from home. I was on a budget of money and time and limited truck rentals. PLUS, if not most importantly, I had to take responsibility for my design decisions. I owed that to myself and everything I held inviolable. I mean, I am practical and stuff, but for me, I rather have peaceful, empty space than something that I hated. Also, my parents are traditional Chinese, so I had the added pressure of being extra cheap. YET I PULLED IT OFF. It was a bit stressful at times–decisions were sometimes made after flustered hesitation (bless the friends that came to IKEA with me), and it took negotiation with my mom about prices, but I absolutely adore everything in my room, and all purchases totaled under $300.

Unfortunately, I can’t put up pictures of my room until I find a camera that captures the sunlight just right. (That might sound snobby, but the digital camera I have right now is REALLY, REALLY bad. It, like, makes stuff darker or lighter than it actually is.) But what I CAN do is list all the purchases I made and give rave reviews of them. But first, I would like to say a few things about IKEA.

  • IKEA is amazing.
  • IKEA is cheap. (Prices and quality are Asian mother approved.)
  • IKEA is easy to put together. (My mechanical skills aren’t bad, but still. Really easy.)
  • IKEA is well-designed.
  • IKEA furniture has energy. (Seriously. I see the expensive stuff in up-scale contemporary stores, and most of it feels empty and soulless. You’re much better off getting an equally well-, if not better, designed cheaper version of what you’re looking for at IKEA, where pieces have the fun vibe of creativity and innovative design. Or maybe I’m just weird. Whatever.)

Bed:

I went creative (okay, fine, I did copy my friend) and opted for a sofa bed instead of a regular bed.

BEDDINGE LÖVÅS sofa bed $199 (For the LÖVÅS mattress and the Ransta dark gray cover as shown.)

I always keep it folded down, and I love it! I’m probably going to always get this sofa bed for myself no matter how rich I am. Why my bed is so amazing:

  • it is a beautiful, black slab of serenity and calm
  • the LOVAS mattress (the firmest of the BEDDINGE mattresses) is really nice to sleep on. I didn’t think it would be at first, but I actually like harder surfaces
  • it’s simple like a platform bed
  • it can double as a couch if need be
  • it comes with those two pillows. I know.
  • it has so much space!!

Desk, Chair, and Lamp:

All IKEA, of course! And all stylistically coordinated! (But not in an annoying way.)

VIKA AMON/ VIKA CURRY table $19.99

RICKARD swivel chair $20.00 JANSJÖ work lamp $9.99

Notes:

  • Yes, the table is nice and sturdy. (Better on hardwood floors, of course.)
  • The chair is actually a bright red. The picture’s color is off. And the work lamp is the same bright red.
  • The work lamp is bendy!

Storage:

SKUBB organizer with 9 compartments $4.99 SKUBB box $7.99 (for 4)

Target Itso storage series- itso Cube White $9.99

Got Pores? Not Anymore!

The little known secret for getting a natural-looking flawless complexion is to put on tons of stuff in your face. I have enormous crater-deep pores and it’s hard for me to get the smooth look, so I’m constantly checking on pore minimizers and decided to compare several brands.

My test consisted on using different brands of pore minimizers, then applying Lancome Teint Idole Fresh Wear 18 hour shine-free makeup and a dab of Nars Powder Foundation, the end result I’m looking for is a smooth complexion with a clean matte finish so I can pretend I was born that way.

Lancome Teint Idole Makeup

Nars Powder Foundation

The first product I tried on was Raw Skincare Andiroba Botanical Face Primer.

Raw Skincare Primer

This primer is a light cream that gives you a fresh feeling when applied. The makeup just glides on and from a foot away my skin looks smooth, but I could still see medium size pores when I take a close look. I give it a rating of 8.5 out of 10.

The next one I tried was Smashbox Photo Finish Targeted Pore & Line Primer.

Smashbox Pore Line Primer

The cool thing about this primer is that its made to give heavy duty coverage for huge pores in the nose area as well cover fine lines. The product itself is a very heavy cream and I could immediately see the coverage on my pores. What I didn’t like was how hard it was to apply the foundation; because of the texture of the primer the foundation looked uneven, although the powder foundation worked well. My pores were greatly minimized but it took more effort to get the flawless look, I shudder to think how I would look if I was in a hurry. My rating is 8 out of 10.

Next it was Tarte Clean Slate

Tarte Clean Slate Primer

This one comes as a clear gel; when you first put it on you can’t see a difference on your face, but as soon as you glide on the foundation you can really tell. The final result is a very smooth finish that feels very light, I really like using this product. My rating is 9 out of 10.

Finally, I used Clinique Pore Minimizer t-zone shine control.

Clinique Pore Minimizer

This is a light and fluffy cream and the first time I applied it, I almost gasped. My pores were almost gone and with the application of makeup I looked amazing. This pore minimizer is designed to be applied under or over makeup in order to prevent shine. My favorite thing about this product is that you don’t have to add foundation to see a difference. If you need to go out for a quick errand, just add some pore minimizer, lip gloss, quick dash of mascara and you’re off. Clinique is the clear winner with a 9.5 out of 10.

Beauty Queen

We know him as the boy next door in Freaks and Geeks, we laughed with him as the stoner in Pineapple Express and then we fell in love with him as Harvey Milk’s boyfriend in Milk.  Yes, I am talking about James Franco…teenage heartthrob turned Golden Globe winner turned drag queen?

Alright, so he’s not a drag queen.  But he was shot for the cover of Candy Magazine by Terry Richardson, wearing lipstick, blue eyeshadow and slicked back hair.  The magazine describes itself as, “the first fashion magazine ever completely dedicated to celebrating transvestism, transexuality, cross dressing and androgyny, in all its manifestations.”  It will be out October 24th and there will only be 1,000 copies available.

James Franco is in the new movie Howl (which is out now), where he plays iconic gay poet Allen Ginsberg.  Since this isn’t the first movie where he played a gay man, people have speculated his sexual orientation – in whichever case, he’s still an amazing actor (he’s been nominated for an Oscar)!

Maxi Mania

As the warm weather fades and the chill sets in, it becomes time to store away those minis.  But don’t let your nostalgia of sunny days and short skirts take reign; try the maxi skirt!  While the skirt is floor-length, it is, without a doubt, a trans-seasonal piece — don it in the winter, spring, summer, or fall.  There’s something so elegant about this floor-sweeping skirt, and depending on what accompanies it, the maxi provides an ethereal, professional, and classic look all in one–that’s the beauty of its versatility.  And we can’t forget the comfort and mobility it allows for!

As for what to pair with the maxi, there are many options to make your look either casual or dressy.  If you’re opting for a more sophisticated look, try a silk tank or blouse tucked in or cropped (no stomach though!).  For a cover-up, try a cropped blazer, leather jacket, or cardigan.   The key is to keep both the top and cover-up cropped, as longer pieces will hide the maxi skirt and cut off your waistline.  Try peep-toe mid-heel pumps or chic ballerina flats.  On the other hand, if you’re wearing the skirt during the day in a more relaxed setting, try a cotton tank or plain white tee — again, tucked in or cropped.  For outerwear, sport a jean jacket or tuck in a flannel.  And for your feet, wear sandals — gladiator, flip-flops, etc.  Or again, add some flats.  Whichever way you go, you’re bound to look chic with the maxi.
