On the Market for a Wedding Dress
I’m getting married sometime next Summer-Fall and have begun my hunt for the perfect dress. I find myself in an unusual situation; I have a tattoo on my bicep that I’m interested in covering with a ‘sleeved’ wedding dress. From the research I’ve done within the last week, I’m finding that hardly any designers design dresses with sleeves. I don’t blame the designers, I assume not that many dresses with sleeves actually sell.
I find Jenny Packham and Temperly London sell some remarkable dresses, however, they don’t sell many designs in the Bay Area. And I don’t really feel like that girl who needs to fly around the country looking for a dress, that just seems impractical.
These are the styles I’m looking for.
I’m absolutely in love with the dress on the left, it’s the flowy sophistication that I’m looking for. The dress to the right isn’t bad, with the ballerina wrap shawl over it, however this look isn’t my favorite.
Pictured above are Temperly London dresses, I love all three of these styles. I think the one pictured left is most like what I’m looking for.
If anyone knows of local Bay Area wedding dress designers, please let me know. I’m interested in making a custom version of one of these styles.

Bieber Fever
I admit, I am a pop princess. I have loved every minute of living through the 90’s and the emergence of New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys (which, btw… I can hardly contain my excitement that they are touring together), Hanson, N’sync and then the rise of the Jonas Brothers and finally Justin Bieber. Let’s be honest, any child starlet makes my heart explode with happiness for the sheer fact that someone their age is able to follow their dream. If there is anyone who can relate to this phenomenon it has got to be me. But my mission today is to help others understand it too, or at least appreciate it.
Justin Bieber caught my eye about a year ago when I saw him on MTV on the Alexa Chung show. He had already had a number one hit, “One Time,” but at that point I wasn’t convinced of his selling power. However seeing him interview and then play a song called, “One Less Lonely Girl,” made me feel like I was 14 again. I find this feeling to be especially appealing, and freeing. I wouldn’t say I officially caught Bieber Fever but I definitely realized what it was about. But for those you that are sitting on the sidelines, just catching glimpses of his perfect hair in magazines and just hearing his songs on the radio might not see it the way others do.
From a PR standpoint, Justin has everything going for him. He is the first artist that I have seen really utilize social media and use it to it’s full capacity. Twitter is one of the best ways that artists can stay in contact with their fans. It has replaced most fan-mail. It’s a quick and an easy way to have that essential two-way communication. I also think its incredibly manageable and easy for the artist to get their voice out. I would love to know how many tweets Bieber gets a day. Remember the kid that got 26,000 text messages after Bieber tweeted his phone number? Bieber got some criticism for abusing his celebrity status for retaliation; personally I thought it was quite humorous.
The few Bieber fans that I follow tend to flood @JustinBieber multiple times a day with the simple hope that he will notice them. He retweets and replies quite often to his fans, and while some people might think it’s a little cliché and impersonal, I believe it’s genius. The guy is doing absolutely everything he can to try to make and maintain a connection with his fans. It’s essential that he shows that he appreciates them, and that they simply, matter. And that’s all a young girl or diehard fan could really ask for. I do have a favorite Bieber fan, her name is Alia. I discovered some of her videos that were Bieberless and found her to be hilarious, and then I saw her eyes light up with the mere mention of the name Bieber… too cute. Her YouTube account is definitely one everyone should check out, Aliatee.
I think Bieber has the most charming fans in the world, or as they probably prefer to be called, “Beliebers.” I have a special place in my heart for these young girls that are continually inspired and following their dreams after being strongly influenced by an equally as charming young Canadian boy. Here’s a video of Michaela Wallace, the latest fan making a name for herself through her love for Justin Bieber. She’s gotten national attention through this video creation. Check out this catchy tune that I’m on the verge of making my new ringtone.
The rest of the world doesn’t have to understand it, because his fanbase is so determined and dedicated to keep his dream alive. One thing you should do before you write him off is check him out on one of his many television appearances, the boy has swagger but yet is so genuine and down to earth. You have the right to not like his music, but after learning more about him, I dare you to try not to appreciate this movement. What he has established for himself is phenomenal and other celebrities should take note.
Bieber is set to release an acoustic album on Black Friday, exclusively at Wal-Mart and through his website, yet again… brilliant PR move, what can I do to get on their team? Of course, more importantly is the music and Bieber recently told MTV his reasons for doing an acoustic album, “I really think that I did an acoustic album because there’s a lot of haters out there that say, ‘Justin Bieber can’t sing. His voice is all Auto-Tuned,’ ” he said. “And there’s a lot with production, it kind of drowns out your voice, and it takes away from the singer, over the synths and everything.” Amen to that. I have nothing but love for the Bieber team and fans, I don’t think the Bieber fever is going to be getting cured anytime soon so you might as well jump in and catch the wave for yourself.
Spring is the new Fall
Fall is well under way (although it may not feel like it here in San Francisco), but for those of you who are still searching for the perfect Fall pieces, I have some advice for you.
During the Spring/Summer 2011 fashion weeks, we saw vibrant colors, feminine embroidery, and heady metallic accents. Some of the top trends for Spring 2011 are very practical to wear during the winter months (you just have to style them accordingly). So, why not get a head start on your Spring shopping!
Sand
This is a great color for Fall 2010, wear this color from head-to-toe for that minimalist look or pair with black for a classic look.
Ink
Ink (or navy) screams Fall, wear this color instead of black or even with black for a fashion-forward Fall look.
Grass
A pop of color is sometimes needed for those dreary days of Fall. Adding a little green to your wardrobe is a great choice (it can be paired with any neutral color and a lot of people look good in green).
Fine Knits
A fine knit sweater is perfect for Fall, it will keep you warm, sans the extra bulk. Pair a thin sweater with a knee length skirt or flare leg denim, for a laid back look (I recommend wearing a bra with one of these sweaters though).
Metallics
A little metallic and shine will brighten up any Fall outfit. Pair a metallic blazer with a white t-shirt and skinny denim for an edgy/rock n roll look.
Snakeskin
We’re going to see patterned tights all over this Fall. Pair snakeskin patterned tights with a black mini dress for a trendy look. If you can’t get behind wearing allover snakeskin, opt for a pair of snakeskin platforms, they can be very sexy!

Layering Turtlenecks for Winter 2010
For Fall/Winter 2010 we saw the emergence of layering turtlenecks for the first time in years. Each designer took a different approach toward the turtleneck execution, but I think everyone can agree that season-less, affordable dressing is a big trend for Fall/Winter 2010, as the world’s recession continues.
One method of layering we saw all over the runways was wearing a turtleneck under an outfit. Basic black, slouchy turtlenecks lead the way in terms of color, which is nice since the item isn’t hard to find. We recommend sticking to relatively thin fabrics, like cotton, sheer knits, or jersey. Remember, the thinner the material the less bulky of frumpy the outfit will look. Pairing your turtleneck with an open neckline is key because the look adds drama and depth to outfits that otherwise look flighty, out of season, or just too optimistic for Winter. For an evening look, wear a turtleneck underneath a sexy, plunging neckline dress and finish with a statement necklace.
We’re glad to have seen this look on the runway, and to be able to fully back it as a crucial winter affordable clothing strategy. Let’s face it, the layered turtleneck trend makes complete sense for winter since it adds a layer of warmth to any outfit from Spring or Fall. And, as I stated earlier, the best thing we can do these days is find great ways to reinvent what we already own since money is tight.
For the ultimate look, pair your ensemble with the following accessories: Floppy hats, leather gloves, chunky necklaces, belts with huge metal buckles, fishnet tights with black platform booties, brightly colored hair extensions.
Basic Makeup Brushes for your collection
In my previous post Makeup Brushes: Which Fiber is Best, I explained the different types of fibers in the market. You can choose from Natural, Synthetic or Taklon fibers. Now that we have that covered I want to suggest which brushes should be the essentials for your makeup collection. My goal is to give you all-in-one, so for each brush I explain why they are used, which fiber is best and how to use it. The pictures below are from mostly from Origins, which offers a collection of cruelty-free brushes. So, let’s start:
Concealer Brush
This is a small brush with broad and flat bristles. Synthetic is the best type of bristle for this brush since they don’t absorb too much product and are ideal for blending liquid and cream makeup. Dab a few spots in the areas with imperfections, for example under the eyes or directly on blemishes, and keep on dabbing until the concealer is blended on your skin.
Foundation Brush
This brush is to be used for liquid or cream foundation. Similar to the Concealer Brush, but bigger with flat and long bristles. Synthetic bristles are also better for this type of brush. To use it, dot your face with liquid foundation and use the brush to spread it in even outward and upward motions being careful to apply some foundation below your jawline to make it look more natural.
This brush is to be used to apply powder blush on your cheeks. The bristles are packed very close together and should be preferably Natural or Taklon. The rounded shape allows a better distribution of the product on your cheeks. The goal with the blush is to give a natural flushed color to the face. This can be accomplished by smiling and starting from the apple of the cheeks upwards to the hairline, apply the product with a soft motion to avoid excess.
This is the big and fluffy brush used to apply the final loose powder that will set your makeup. It can also be used to apply shimmer, mineral powder or bronzer. The Powder Brush is similar to the Blusher, but bigger with fluffy Natural or Taklon bristles. The powder is to be placed directly on the brush and apply it using small circular motions all over the face for a better coverage.
For eyes and lips we have a few basic brushes. If you’re like me, all you do is apply one eyeshadow color at a time on special occasions. If you’re like my sister, then you like to blend, smudge, contour and create unique looks. I will cover those brushes in the Advanced Makeup Brushes post.
Eyeshadow Brush
Used to apply powder eyeshadow, this should be flat and wide preferably from Natural or Taklon fibers. There are too many ways to apply eyeshadows depending on your preference and comfort level. Whether its applying only on the lower lid and crease or the whole lid, the eyeshadow brush will help you get a great look.
Used to apply or blend cream eyeliners. This is a thin and fine brush, preferably made from synthetic fibers. There is no wrong or right way in using this brush, it all depends on how natural or dramatic you want your makeup to look. Some cream eyeliners come in a stick, in this case the brush can help you soften the lines after you apply it.
This is a small flat brush with a slight angle, also should be made from synthetic fibers. It gives definition and shape to the eyebrows. Apply the eyebrow pencil directly on the areas that need some color with a very soft motion in order to avoid streaks and blend it with the brush. The effect will be eyes that pop even more.
This is the double sided tool with a stiff brush on one side and a small comb on the other. This one is used to help the application of the mascara on your eyelashes. You will first use the brush in order to clean up your eyelashes and prepare them for the mascara application. Once you applied the mascara, use the comb side to separate and lengthen before the product dries and becomes stiff.
This is a fine, soft and tapered brush usually found as retractable and because it is used with cream based product, it should be synthetic. They help to blend in the lip liner with the lipstick and just give a better way to fill in the creases and outline the lips.
So there you have it. This guide will help you select the makeup brushes for your basic application needs. You will be amazed at how much better your face will look once you apply your makeup with the right tools.
