Shout It Out!
Shout It Out, sounds like the commercial for laundry detergent. But the sold out crowd this weekend at House of Blues Chicago were very clear that this had nothing to do with the cleanliness of their clothes. Rather, the overall message for the past couple years of the Hanson fanbase has been about starting a movement and spreading the word.
Familiar with Toms Shoes? Toms Shoes started the One for One movement, where you buy a pair of shoes and another pair gets given to a child in need. I can personally tell you that these shoes are the most comfortable shoes you will ever own. I already have 4 pairs and you can wear them with just about anything.
Back in October of 2007 Hanson went to Africa on a shoe drop with Toms. After the inspirational trip, Hanson began doing one-mile barefoot walks before each of their shows on tour. For each person that registers and does the one-mile walk with them, 1 dollar will be donated on their behalf from Hanson. And you can choose the cause your dollar will be donated towards, whether its building clean water wells, helping with education or providing HIV treatment for pregnant women. This weekend I took my 7th charity walk with Hanson. I find what they are doing to be extremely admirable. Taking the walk is about taking action. After I did it once I was hooked. Taking a barefoot walk is such a tangible thing for me to do and feel like I am truly making a difference. Apparently I wasn’t the only one who feels this way because 500 people showed up to take the walk in Chicago on Saturday. On to the concert review, I prefer not to share the number of Hanson concerts I’ve been to throughout the past 13 years. But it’s been quite a few so it’s hard for me to write a concert review that can be appreciated by the general population because I will always compare them to so many of the other shows that I have seen. But nevertheless, let’s start with the openers. I love going to Hanson concerts because their supporting acts seem to always be bands that I truly appreciate. So many of my favorite bands were introduced to me on Hanson’s stage and for that I will be forever grateful. Rooney (pictured below) has been supporting Hanson on their first leg and soon A Rocket to the Moon will be on the dates. I could do without ever seeing Rooney again. Don’t get me wrong; I think they have some good things going for them. It’s very guitar based and driven. But the lead singer just needs to be let go; he comes off so arrogant and annoying on stage. I really couldn’t take my eyes off his ridiculousness.
Hanson put together an opening band contest for this tour as well. Each show features a different local band. I love this because it can give so much exposure to the little guys. Friday night was Wes Kirkpatrick. Decent, but it’s one of those bands that would be better off sticking to little coffee houses, because that’s more of their element. Saturday was HappyGoLovely with a Justin Bieber esque but more of a badass with piercings guitar player. Overall the band had a great sound. Fans of The Rocket Summer or NeverShoutNever! will certainly appreciate this band. Afterwards I found out they are from Cedar Rapids, IA. Not too far from my little hometown, I will be cheering this group on and wish them the best of success.

Hanson performing live on Jimmy Fallon
Hanson’s show was amazing as usual. With a catalog of hundreds of songs I’m always eager to hear the set list. Most of the songs they played were from their 5th and newest studio album, “Shout It Out.” (click here to buy it on amazon!) They also played quite a few numbers from 1997 era. And for those of you wondering, yes of course they played Mmmbop. Personally I think the song choices for these two shows could have been better, but performance wise this was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while from them. If you take anything out of reading my writing on this blog please please pleaseeee check out Hanson. I am confident that you will be pleasantly surprised. Here’s the remainder of their tour dates….

This week in fashion
Another week has passed, which means more personal style posts from some of my favorite bloggers!
1. Facehunter, 2. Late Afternoon, 3. Refinery29 (photo styled by What I Wore), 4. The Streethearts
This week I’m loving the cozy layers and the colors that these fashionista’s incorporated into their simple ensembles! It is summer after-all (although it may not feel like it here in San Francisco)…there’s no need to wear dark colors just because the weather isn’t perfect!
Baby Gap Makes Skinny Jeans
I was watching the Colbert Report the other night, and Steven had a little segment about skinny jeans…mainly that Baby Gap has introduced a line of skinny jeans for toddler girls. At first I was thinking this is crazy stupid, and what next, a line of thong undies at Baby Gap Body? Back to the skinny jeans, I mean toddlers don’t have nice enough legs to be wearing tight jeans (no offense toddlers). Secondly, skinny jeans would really restrict toddlers movement, right? Then I thought about the alternatives in kids fashion, and though I’ve covered a few attractive children’s collections on Style Bust, but good kids fashion is like finding a needle in a haystack – and it really shouldn’t be this way.
So I fully support baby Gaps decision to produce skinny jeans for girl toddlers. I would just recommend that the mommy’s out there buy the jeans one size too large, that way the girls first get to rock the hip-hop look (also get them some Dunks to pair with the jeans to complete this hip-hop look), then, once the pants get a little tighter you can pair the pants with wedges (not! I’m totally against girl toddlers wearing any type of heels, ew! and baby high heels…don’t even go there).
Modern Urban Wall Decals
Change your mind every 2 weeks and can’t commit to wall decorations? Too lazy to put up wall paper and too scared if it’ll leave gunk on the walls? Tired of “grandmother prints” and looking for bolder, artsy graphics to add instant energy to a room? I present to you, ladies and gentlemen, they’re quick, they’re affordable, they’re customizable, chic, and gunk-free–they’re wall decals!
Made of a thin vinyl that is easy to apply and peel off, wall decals leave no residue on surfaces and can be peeled off, stored away, and swapped out at any time. And they’re not just for walls–any other smooth surface will work too! These featured wall decals come from the Surface Store (www.thesurfacestore.com), which specializes in artsy, modern, urban prints. But if you’re looking for something more traditional or want to put up a prints of your parakeet, no problem! Just search online for wall skins/stickers/decals for amazing selections of graphics. Other sites, like http://wallskins.skinit.com, give you the option of creating your wall designs that they will make and deliver.
College kid approved prices! (Relatively speaking…) Seriously. There’s no excuse for a blank wall.

Kmart: The Comeback Kid
Sure, we all know and love Target for a few things…home decor, electronics and of course their women’s clothing department! Especially when they collaborate with designers such as, Rodarte, Zac Posen, and William Rast.
But this Fall, Target may have a little competition. Kmart! Yes, you heard me…the store that I haven’t visited in about 15 years is putting their fashion foot forward! And to be honest…I’m quite impressed with what I’ve seen of their Fall collection.
They’ve got military jackets to mimic Balmain and Phillip Lim (all priced below $100). Kmart also hired fashion photographer Alexi Lubomirski (whose work usually appears in the pages of GQ and V Magazine) to shoot the Fall campaign. And to top it off…they’ve got a senior designer who once worked at the YSL atelier!
Pretty impressive! I’m excited to check out their Fall collection…now, only if I knew where the nearest Kmart was!
Denim Days
I’m a huge fan of wearing denim on top…especially in the form of a chambray/denim button down shirt. There are a lot of ways to style this denim-on-top trend without making it look like you’re wearing a Canadian Tuxedo!
Below is 1 top, styled 4 different ways (with a high-end look and a low-end look from Forever21)…so you can see how easy it is to wear your denim shirt for practically any occasion (whether you’re going out for the evening or just running errands)!
Get a similar (cheaper) look here from Forever21.
Check out the Forever21 version of this outfit here.
Here is a similar look from Forever21.

As you can see, wearing a denim button down is simple and it’s an All-American classic (I don’t care what they say about the Canadian Tuxedo…I think it originated here)!
Going Natural.
I used to be a self-proclaimed make-up hound. I would wake up as early as 5 am on school days in order to make sure that my face was perfect. Granted, this was necessary in high school because I had a terrible acne problem (one part due to hormones, the other part due to cheap chemicals in drug store make up that I clogged my pores with) and would rather die than be caught dead with a pimple showing. But it wasn’t just foundation and cover-up I even sported fake eyelashes to chemistry class. To me, beauty and sex appeal was all in the full face makeup. Looking back, wearing all of this for more than 7 hours a day was not only uncomfortable but also completely ridiculous; I didn’t need make up to make me beautiful.
I still wear makeup but I have swapped out my M.A.C studio fix foundation in N15 for Urban Decay tinted moisturizer in Halo. It’s much lighter and lets some of my nature imperfections show, which I now appreciate. It also doesn’t cling as badly to my dry spots when the day starts to wear away at my make-up. Natural makeup just seems to suit who I have become. I think that there is a common misconception in women (and especially teenage girls, I know… I was recently one) who consider themselves stylish that a full face of make up is high fashion or sexy. Let me clarify full face. It’s smokey eye, foundation, blush, bronzer, and lipstick. Every inch of the face is covered. Yes, it can be perfect on the right occasion, but it shouldn’t be an everyday look.
And you know what a lot of make up can do to a girl? … age her. Since I have decided to not wear as much makeup as I used to (some days I don’t wear any at all and I still feel confident!) I have been told that I look “innocent” and “sweet”. I will gladly take these adjectives because I have a feeling that for the rest of my life I will be trying to regain that youthful look that I “covered up” for most of my young life.
