Going Green from the Inside Out
With the advent of high-speed blenders and “Cadillac” juicers, it’s time to take the extra step in Green Living. After swearing off plastic bottles and going on recycling rampages, clean up the ecosystem that really matters. We can go green on the inside by introducing fresh, raw vegetable juices into our lives.
Why? This is the #1 Question.
Green Juices Provide The Following:
- Chlorophyll
- Trace Minerals
- Vegetable Protein
- Enzymes
- Alkalizing
It’s Gross!! This is the #1 Complaint.
Ok…OK. My first swallow of green juice nearly brought a tear to my eye. I was use to drinking Grape Soda and then washing that down with Hawaiian Punch. It’s an acquired taste. The more it’s consumed, the easier it is on the stomach.
Getting started is simple. A $20 blender will do. Toss in your veggies, cover with water and blend! If you’re lazy (like me) stop into your local Whole Foods Market or an equal and they’ll juice it up for you. Rookies should consume “light greens.” Romaine, butter and endive lettuces have gentle/sweet flavors. From there, easily digestible veggies can be added…a cool cucumber and celery mix…
Once the stomach adjusts, graduate to more bitter greens like collard, kale and mustard. If the green drink is too sour, drop in a few of pieces of Granny Smith Apples or a sliver of mango.
Soon enough a chilled green drink will be as appealing as an iced Corona with a lime perched on top…maybe….

Visual Displays at Septieme Etage and Au Dela du Septieme Etage in Geneva, Switzerland
While searching the web for some interesting visual store displays for a side project, I stumbled upon Paperstorm, which was produced by Cut Paper artists Mia Pearlman, for two Swiss stores in Geneva called Septieme Etage and Au Dela du Septieme Etage. Pearlman has been known for whipping up some pretty nifty looking paper art installations for various venues across around the globe (she has a pretty impressive portfolio, and a wonderful website). Her work seems to be themed around weather, and particularly dark and stormy weather. These installations for the Swiss stores were up in 2008, so this in not current, breaking news, but I thought the visuals were so beautiful that they were worth sharing with you.
Festival Express
Music festival season is well underway! Which means that culture lovers from around the world are dusting-off camping equipment, memorizing song lyrics and nowadays, thinking about what they pack in their backpacks! It seems that the fashion scene at these festivals is just as important as the music!
Festival fashion is about mixing clothes, styles, accessories and fabrics you wouldn’t normally dare to mix…the festival scene is home to self-expression and individualism.
Remember the practicalities of fashion are of the utmost importance on the festival scene (comfortable shoes and clothing) and be prepared for all weather conditions…it may be summer but rain and mud are always a possibility at festivals. And for the finishing touch…accessorize! Anything goes…there is time and place for wearing what you want…and a music festival is just the place!
If you missed Coachella, SXSW and Bonnaroo, no need to fret…there are still a few note-worthy festivals coming up this month!
Lollapalooza in Chicago, Outside Lands in San Francisco, Mile High Music Fest, Denver, and Burning Man in Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
If Video Killed The Radio Star… What’s Killing Live Music?
Recently I had lunch with one of my old colleagues from Live Nation. Her and I fell into a deep discussion about how the music business has always been evolving and changing, but currently there is a sudden widespread fear and uncertainty about what moves to make next. Live Nation is a powerhouse when it comes to live music; it’s one of the top 3 concert promotion companies in the world. Now after their merge with Ticketmaster they practically dominate (some might say monopolize) the industry. Live Nation however, doesn’t seem to be calling the shots. LN canceled 200+ shows this summer. Chairman of Live Nation Entertainment, Irving Azoff’s plan is to pull the shows so demand can build up again.

Rihanna, one of the many popular artists this summer that has had to cancel tour dates due to poor ticket sales
Today, we have so much music at our fingertips. Hearing Katy Perry’s song, California Gurls for the first time a few months ago, I thought to myself, this is going to be the song of the summer. Radio has played the crap out of this song. It’s now the all-time Mediabase Top 40 Airplay Record holder with more than 13,000 spins in one week. Talk about killing demand. Why would I need to buy this song on iTunes if I can turn on the radio and hear it 9+ times a day? Or watch the video on Youtube? How about making myself a play list on Grooveshark?
CEO of Live Nation, Michael Rapino has said, the average concert-goer attends one show a year. It shouldn’t be this way. In a society where we expect instant gratification, something needs to be done so I can see every band that I want to see live, within the same year. Some blame it on the economy, with high priced tickets and extra fees no one has the money to spend on going to a live show. Hell, I don’t even like to spend 30 bucks to see my favorite band perform each year. So LN introduces deals like “no fee Wednesday” or half off tickets day of show. They want to fill the venue – LN collects some money through concessions and merch. But ultimately LN takes a hit for acts to not play to an empty room and then the artist collects their guarantee. But in order for ticket prices to truly lower the artist has to be the one to take a hit. Some of these high priced acts simply need a reality check.
I’m over the days where I want to give Britney Spears (pictured above) my hard earned money (no offense to my bff who was once on her payroll). My favorite concerts to go see are not in the large amphitheaters, I’m not interested in the overall production. I don’t want to see the same show by Phish or Journey anymore. I want to see the small independent artists. They are playing to a crowd of true music lovers, and the curious passerby that doesn’t mind paying 10 bucks to see some live music. I want to know that when I buy the ticket every dime spent is going towards the band in order for them to continue living out their dream.
To be truly successful a band needs to have longevity and it starts by establishing a dedicated fan base. In my opinion one of the best groups to target is the 16 – 25 year olds, the people that are searching for something to believe in and inspire them. This group can evolve and change over the years with their favorite band. But this group especially can’t afford 40-dollar tickets. I think the wake up call is finally here and change is about to come. In the meantime Via Audio (pictured left) is one of the amazing bands out of Brooklyn that you can see live for 10 dollars in August. They have dates in New York, Brooklyn & Boston. East-Coasters you MUST check them out and tell me what you think!

Liv-Chic: modern baroque will get my heart broke
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god! Cue the Korean drama montages—I just fell in love!! There I was, hopefully surfing the internet for furniture manufacturers that carried playful, bold renditions of rococo-era chairs for my story on King Louis XV design (“Coo coo for Rococo!” it was going to be called), when I stumbled across my DREAM CHAIR.
I know, I know. I’m silly. Other people have dream cars; I have dream chairs. But I had seriously been yearning for the sure to be amazing visual effects of modernizing 18th century French furniture when I came across the online furniture Liv-Chic (www.liv-chic.com) and realized that I was not alone. Founded in 2007 by New York interior designer Hilary White, Liv-Chic specializes in modern, sassy Baroque furniture that is custom-made to fit your every last whim down to color, fabric, and finish (because, according to the website, a Liv-Chic girl “wants what she wants, how she wants”).
The trend is called haute femme—bringing back the romanticism and luxurious plush comfort of eras past and adding whimsical modern twists. “There is a trend away from colder, contemporary environments to something that’s a little bit more plush, warm and eclectic,” says Wid Chapman, a Parsons School of Design professor. With its gilded frames and ornate curves (and endorsements from Madames Pompadour and Antoniette), it’s no wonder that French furniture has recaptured our hearts and fancies.

By Liv-Chic. Another possible twist to the Gigi chair. Love it, love it, love it!!!
Each furniture design in the Liv-Chic line is given a female name, which is perfect as each piece pops princess personality. Add one or two of these lovely ladies to your home for instant drama and pizazz. Meet some of your royal highnesses here:
More haute femme in the weeks to come! I’m so excited!! -Beryl
Light Drops
The Light Drop was designed by Brazilian product designer Rafael Morgan. The concept: the more you twist the tap, the brighter the light. The design is supposed to burn an image of natural resource conservation. Morgan says,
The Light Drop is supposed to make people think about how we are dealing with our natural resources, in this particular case, the water, which is the main source of energy for every living organism in this fantastic world. Water is energy indeed.
Morgan won 3rd Prize for Designboom’s Bright LED competition with Light Drop. The light fixtures are currently being produced and sold by Wever & Ducre.
Ms. Stone Keeps it Real
In the fashion realm, where models rule the runways, appear flawless in every fashion ad, and even look stunning off duty, it’s hard not to feel insecure. We may, at times, even question, “Why can’t we look that good?” What’s not to love about those long, lean legs, glowing complexions, and striking features? While skinny is always in, modeling standards are becoming more realistic and models with some curves and “imperfections” are becoming highly admired. The main model that comes to mind is Lara Stone. Known for that conspicuous gap between her teeth, her atypical (for a model) size 6 figure, and freckles, she has certainly set the standard for unconventional beauty — and it’s about time! Despite the unrelenting criticism this Dutch beauty has received for her weight, she is still one of the sexiest, sought-after models. She’s walked for countless shows including, Missoni, Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, Chanel, Lanvin, Miu Miu, Chanel, Prada, Balmain, D&G, Prada, Anna Sui, and many more. She’s graced the covers of international versions of Elle, in addition to Vogue, W, Harpers Bazaar, and Interview. And in 2009, she was featured on the August 2009 cover of W, declaring her the most desired face.
Without a doubt, Ms. Stone possesses natural beauty, something that we too often disregard. And not only is it her natural beauty that draws us in, but also, it’s Stone’s confidence — she exudes a healthy esteem.
The notion of imperfect beauty is setting precedence, and women are beginning to question conventional beauty. Does it even exist? Is it actually boring? Whether it’s a set of freckles on your cheeks, a gap like Ms. Stone’s, or an uneven set of eyebrows, embrace it, cherish it. After all, perfection is an illusion, so why strive for it?
