Summer Nail Trends
This summer’s nail trends are all about interesting designs, easy to do at home and bold neon colors. There’s a little something for every budget and taste.
Neons
Most nail polish brands are offering awesome neon colors, like Julep’s Leah, Sephora by OPI Neon Lights, SPARitual’s Dreamsicle, Sally Hansen’s Xtreme Wear, and so many others. What makes neon look trendier now than how it was back in the 80’s is color blocking: combining different shades to make cubist-type designs.
Not long ago Nails, Inc. introduced Magnetic Nail Polish, a very unique way to create nail art by using a specially designed magnet. To make it even more unique, the new polish and magnet creates a fishnet effect. I bought the polish a few days ago and today I noticed it was missing the magnet (ugghh) will exchange it tomorrow, can’t wait to use it!
Sephora by OPI – It’s Real 18K Gold Top Coat
I may be a nail polish junkie, but in this case I can’t see myself buying this top coat. The polish contains real gold that will make any nail color pop. At $30 each, I think I’ll pass. But if any reader buys it, please let us know what you think!!
Gelshine At-Home Gel Colour System
If you wanted to get a gel manicure, the only option was to go to the nail salon, now you can do it at home! This is a great product for women who have little time to change nail polish colors or go to the nail saloon since the polish is supposed to last up to two weeks without chipping.
This can be a pricey option since the starter kit costs $159, plus the nail polish colors are $17.50 each. And then supplies will need to re-stocked. For some women gelshine at home will make sense because of the convenience, in my case, I change my polish twice a week so it would be a waste of a great product. The good thing is that this product is now available to us!
Trends For the Kitchen – What’s Cookin’ For 2013
I haven’t bought a home, or anything bigger than an armoire, but I hear that the kitchen is often the selling point in a house. It makes sense. A lot of time is spent in the kitchen. Whether or not you’re buying a house, kitchens are the most heavily trafficked area of a house. A lot of hanging out and entertaining occurs here – so keeping the look modern is important. I’ve complied the up-and-coming kitchen design trends for 2013. These trends are perfect for bespoke cheap kitchens and kitchen remodels.
The new neutral – Designers are replacing the basics: white, cream, tan, and gray with green. You heard right, you can use green as your new neutral. Build a beautiful palette of colors around green!
Light the room – LED lighting is a real trend taking hold in kitchens across the country.
Non-traditional woods – Steer clear of cherry and maple woods. Alder, birch, oak, walnut, and bamboo are the new norms for cabinetry.
Hide it away – Integrated appliances like drawer-style fridges, and fridges, ovens, microwaves and dishwashers fronted to match the cabinetry give a clean look. We can now hide most of the ‘operations,’ and our kitchens.
Mixing it up – Designer David Bromstad says a collected, eclectic look is all the rage in design right now. Mixing kitchen finishes is a great way to get the collective look.
Nostalgia – Wall murals and prints work great as small focuses between cabinets and behind breakfast nooks.
Glass backsplashes – No seams, no grout, easy to clean—what more could you want? How about luminous, reflective colors? Back-painted glass backsplashes win on all counts.
Summer fashion inspired by the big screen
I’m a huge fan of Wes Anderson films – who doesn’t love Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic (to name a few), and his cast of familiar faces like Jason Shwartzman, Billy Murray, and Anjelica Huston.
Mr. Anderson is at it again with his latest film, Moonrise Kingdom, a beautifully filmed tale of outsiders and puppy love that takes place in the 1960’s.
I love so many things about this movie – from the grainy/vintage Polaroid look throughout the film to the perfectly polished 1960’s fashion. Knee high stockings and saddle shoes may not be something I’d like to see an adult wearing but the pastel hues and shift dresses worn throughout Moonrise Kingdom have a summertime appeal to them. I’ve created a few “lady-like” looks inspired by Moonrise Kingdom that are perfect for Summer 2012.
Check out Moonrise Kingdom at a theater near you – and feel free to take some fashion notes from the ever-so-fashionable 12 year old, Suzy Bishop!
FOX Pilots: New FOX TV Shows For Fall 2012
Summer just began, but I’m already looking ahead to Fall TV series. FOX has announced new programming. Here are brief synopses of three brand new shows you’ll be seeing on FOX later this year.
BEN AND KATE. What happens when an exuberant, irresponsible dreamer who always says “yes” moves in with his overly responsible little sister to help raise her five-year-old daughter? The new single-camera comedy follows the siblings as they push each other out of their comfort zones and into real life. Kate Fox (Dakota Johnson, “The Social Network”) followed the rules all her life…until she got pregnant in college and dropped out just shy of graduation. After the birth of her daughter, Maddie, Kate put her twenties on hold. Now working as a bar manager to make ends meet and maximize her time with five-year-old, she’s uber-prepared for every possible catastrophe – except for the arrival of her older brother, Ben Fox (Nat Faxon, “Bad Teacher”). Ben likes trouble. He’ll screw up your life, but somehow, you’ll feel good about it. Where Kate is all about planning and preparing, Ben is big on spontaneity and out-of-the-box ideas. When Ben comes to crash on Kate’s couch for a few days, he finds a sad state of affairs. Kate’s surviving, but not living.
THE MINDY PROJECT. THE MINDY PROJECT is a new single-camera comedy from Emmy Award-nominated writer/producer and New York Times best-selling author Mindy Kaling (“The Office”). The series follows a woman who, despite having a successful career (as an OB/GYN), desperately needs to break bad habits in her personal life. After all, how many doctors make inappropriate toasts at their ex-boyfriend’s wedding, nearly drown at the bottom of a stranger’s pool and get arrested for disorderly conduct just moments before having to deliver a baby. Mindy Lahiri is determined to be more punctual, spend less money, lose weight and read more books – all in pursuit of becoming a well-rounded perfect woman.
THE MOB DOCTOR. For most physicians, the Hippocratic oath is sacred. But for one Chicago doctor, who is indebted to the mafia, saving lives isn’t her only concern. This series is a medical drama featuring a young female cardiothoracic surgeon who is split between two distinct worlds as she juggles her promising medical career with her lifelong debt as a doctor to Chicago’s Southside mob. Dr. Devlin (Jordana Spiro, “My Boys”) is a top resident at Roosevelt Medical Center. Smart and self-assured, she’s heralded as one of the country’s most promising young surgeons. But family ties keep her glued to her Southside roots. To pay off her brother’s life-threatening gambling debt, she makes a deal with the devil and agrees to work “off book” for the mafia men she once despised.
I’m also looking for the return of some of the best shows FOX has to offer. NEW GIRL and BOB’S BURGERS are two shows I’m particularly interested in watching in the Fall. It’s so cool that FOX is selling an assortment of fan favorite shirts and merchandise from each show. Check out the merchandise here: NEW GIRL, BOB’S BURGERS. You can catch up on complete seasons of hit FOX series buy purchasing DVDs and Blu-rays at the official FOX Shop.

Q&A With Janette of Simone & KoZ
I had the privilege to spend a little time with Janette Simone of Simone & KoZ Handbags the other week. I learned a lot about Janette and her unique leather products. For starters, the mission behind her high quality, handcrafted designs is to provide women the opportunity to be noticed wearing a unique one-of-kind bag. Here is some additional insight I gathered!
StyleBust: How did the concept of Simone & KoZ come about?
Janette Simone: This is a bit of ‘an out of the ordinary’ story. I was unfulfilled working in a conventional role in Australia so I took a quantum leap by immigrating to California where I ‘gave birth’ to my company Simone & KoZ. Being a lover of all things animal hide, I collaborated with a designer and created a collection of handbags that push the boundaries combining the traditional with the outrageous while remaining beautiful and timeless. I recognized a niche where I could provide women with a completely unique, animal hide handbag that assures individuality and exclusivity.
SB: Is your background in the fashion/accessories industry?
JS: Other than being an avid fashion consumer with an eye for detail and style, I do not have direct lineage to the fashion industry. This is a newly created part of my life journey which allows me the pleasure of offering women another way to express their wild side by accessorizing with animal hide handbags. My handbags are a conversation piece; they are also functional and designed to accommodate a woman’s lifestyle needs.
SB: Describe your current collection.
JS: Handbags are not just a fashion statement anymore. So, my collection is designed to be large, sturdy and functional to support the many needs of today’s lifestyles. Currently, my focus is on three sizes of goat-hair/leather bags. The ‘My Everything’ handbag – aptly named because it’s a basic part of my everyday toting essentials that easily carries my iPad and so much more. I love the ‘Overnight Desires’ cabin bag because it’s an easy, throw-everything-in bag for those quick (romantic?) weekend getaways and the ‘Travel With Me’ bag is a superb weekender that is large enough to pack everything you could possible need. I can’t forget the ‘Me & You’ that is just a fun, cross-body, non-gender specific satchel with room for you iPad that appeals to everyone.
SB: Where can we buy your bags?
JS: I’m selling my bags at Wonderland SF, Shoes for the Stars in LA, and at simoneandkoz.com.
SB: How is your line different than the average handbag lines out there?
JS: Each bag is unique; no two are alike and no one will have the same bag as you. You will have to endure a lot of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ as people will literally cross the street to compliment you and ask all sorts of questions about your handbag. That will be your price to pay for having a keen eye for fashion and choosing a completely unique handbag that inspires you. I would have to say that if you don’t want or like attention, it’s probably best not to buy my bags! (big smile)
SB: Are you manufacturing your products locally?
JS: No, my products are manufactured off shore. I care about the off shore local artisans who manufacture my products and donate a portion of my profits back to their community.
SB: What types of women respond to your line well?
JS: Most women consider their handbags to be a staple wardrobe item. Statistics show that on average, women bought 3 handbags per year and own 7 or more handbags. My exquisite handbags appeal to a broad demographic of women (and men). Specifically, those who like to be noticed wearing trendy, exclusive, fashionable accessories that are on the ‘edge’ and that aren’t necessarily available to the masses. My customers expect to purchase an eye-catching, conversation-starting handbag and demand a well made, quality product. Women want a handbag that supports and assures their uniqueness and exclusivity. My customers have an appreciation for animal hide accessories and want to make an investment in their personal style with a unique handbag. They won’t compromise when it comes to being noticed and standing out in a crowd. It has been said that we may like clothes, makeup and love shoes, but we are addicted to HANDBAGS!
SB: What are the challenging parts of starting your own line?
JS: Probably the biggest challenge has been the shift from thinking like an employee to thinking like a business owner and realizing that all decisions lay with me – right or wrong! Effectively managing my time and resources means I have to strategize constantly depending upon which ‘hat’ I’m wearing at any given moment. It’s challenging to keep everything in balance and to find time to complete tasks while working on growing my business. Fortunately, I am persistent and happy with my chosen profession. I don’t see failure as an option.
SB: Who are the handbag designers you admire, and what about those designers/designs stand out to you?
JS: Alexander Wang, Prada, Fendi, Burberry, Balenciaga I could go on…..they all exude luxury, fashion and style. How often do you see something like a special edition Swarovski encrusted crystal handbag designed by Chanel? It’s the exciting, outrageous designs and intricate details these designers incorporate into their products that get my attention.
SB: What is you favorite trend of the season?
JS: I like the strappy wedges – you know, the sky-high ones that boost you above the crowd (for height challenged women like me, they’re perfect). Combine the shoes with a print pencil skirt or maxi dress layered with bangles and of course all the great new takes on animal print to create a bold and edgy look. Round it all off with your leather motorcycle jacket….in white! Ultimately, fashion is an individual thing and whatever makes you feel good.
SB: When you’re not working, what are you doing?
JS: Hmm, it feels like I’m always enjoyably working one way or another. I often say that my vocation is my vacation. When I actually do put time aside, I regenerate by being near the ocean.
