Taiwan’s Lying Down Game
I found this story on about “girls lying face down in the streets” chinaSMACK. These photographs are of two young girls in Taiwan, “Jinyu” 25-years-old in Taipei and “Karren” 28-years-old in Taichung. They apparently love photography.
This activity is known as “planking” and that there are also other names like “the lying down game” or “facedowns“. I’m not sure the activity/game will catch on here in the states, but I thought some of the photographs were compelling enough o share here.
Survey Reveals Secrets About Women And Bathing Suits
FITNESS Magazine Polled More Than 1,000 Women to Get the Scoop on Stripping Down and Suiting Up
A new survey from FITNESS magazine reveals that women are bringing body issues with them to the beach. 80% of women polled for the magazine’s swimsuit survey say they feel other women are judging them when they wear a bathing suit and 48% say they’d only feel confident flaunting a bikini after losing more than 20 pounds.
FITNESS magazine polled women ages 18 and over to get the scoop on how they really feel about swimsuit season, what celebrity body they are dying to have and what they would give up to have a swimsuit model’s body. The results appear in the June 2011 issue, on stands May 17th.

Baked goods
Recently my boyfriend brought home some molasses and I wasn’t sure what he (or myself) was going to do with it. Turns out, molasses is great for baking and the recipes are fairly simple to follow.
Ginger molasses cupcakes with almond whip cream frosting
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 8 ounces (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 2/3 cup molasses
- 2 large eggs
- 1/3 cup hot water
- 1/2 cup fresh ginger, peeled and minced + 1 tablespoon ground ginger
- Ground ginger, for garnish
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line standard muffin tins with paper liners. Whisk dry ingredients in a large bowl. Cream butter and sugar with a mixer until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition.
- Reduce speed to low. Mix any remaining wet ingredients in a bowl. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture in 3 additions, alternating with wet ingredients and ending with dry. Scrape sides of bowl. Divide batter among muffin cups, filling each 2/3 full.
- Bake cupcakes until testers inserted into centers come out clean, about 20 minutes. Let cool in tins on wire racks.
- 2-3 cups heavy whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons almond extract
Directions
- Whip the cream on a medium speed, whipped to soft peaks
- Slowly stir in almond extract
Wait about 30 minutes or until cupcakes are cool to frost them with the whip cream.
Happy Sunday!
I know it’s Mother’s Day and I should be showing the readers some Mother’s Day-esque artwork, but I was really intrigued by this collage, and the message. Hope you enjoy!

Spring Cleaning
Have you been doing any spring cleaning lately? I don’t mean the kind where you effectively remove a boyfriend/girlfriend who is nothing but dead weight, I’m talking about actual cleaning. As annoying as it is to set aside an entire day getting yourself dirty in order to make your home clean, the end result is always worth it: a sparkling clean, shiny home. And being in a sparkling clean, shiny home makes me want to wear not the usual sweatpants and sweat-stained t-shirt that I still own from 8th grade. I actually would prefer to wear sparkly, shiny things, too.
What’s the Internet? 1994 Segment of NBC’s The Today Show
Seventeen years ago I was 11, Ace of Base was the biggest band, Mrs. Doubtfire was the box office hit, and The Today Show’s Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel we trying to familiarize themselves with the internet. In the following video segment from January 1994, the news anchors and their staff talk briefly about what the internet is. Gumbel isn’t sure how to pronounce “@”, and no one says “dot” when they read “.com”. They have to ask a crew member to clarify how the internet works. Do you write to it like mail? Is it just in Universities? Does it require a phone line?
This video is a reminder of how unprepared the mainstream media was for the internet.
Living Room Decor Refresh In Time For Spring
I’ve worked in Home Decor for a couple of years. When I started I thought four seasons of home furnishings per year was ridiculous. Why would anyone need to refresh their home seasonally? This isn’t clothing worn out in public we’re talking about, it’s the look of our home – and unless we entertain on a regular basis who really cares if our living room textiles are so Fall 2006?
I’ve learned that people do refresh their home decor on a fairly regular basis.
Add some freshness to your apartment by following some on the best Home Decor looks for Spring 2011.
My eye is automatically drawn to the intense color of the suede sofa and pillows. The designer paired the smaller sized sofa with larger, neutral color side chairs; a safe and smart move. The best part of this room is the artwork. I like how the art doesn’t seem to go together very well, yet looks fantastic. This to me is a bold move that we don’t see people take too often.
This room itself is fantastic. The color of the walls blends very nicely into the light wood floors. There are so many patterns going on in this room without the furniture. This basic, gray designer sofa is a great piece for the room. Additionally the fact that the colors are extremely limited help focus attention on the important elements (the walls and the floor).
The furniture and decor in this room work well for the small living space. The coffee table and accent pieces are not to dark, heavy which helps them appear smaller than they actually are. To add some life to the space the designer pulled in some great prints that compliment each other well without created a clutter feel.
This spacious living room gets it’s personality from prints. The walls have a tan and white motif wallpaper (wallpaper has sure made a comeback). The contrasting print side chair is filled with personality. These pieces, along with the toss pillows bring life to an otherwise sparse and stale living environment.
Which look suites you best? I prefer the blue sofa and mismatched wall art look.
Ultimate Decor for a Wedding Reception
As some of you might know I’m getting married this summer at the Peninsula Golf & Country Club in San Mateo, CA.
I’d like the decor to make a big and accurate statement about our style, however I am not much of a flower person. I’d like the decor to consist of some white and ivory field flowers as well as plenty of potted succulents (that I get to keep forever!), as well as LOTS of candles. I try to sum the look and feel up as vintage, natural and earthy. Lace and dolies will also be another huge element to tie the looks together.
