Cover Your Eyes With Ray-Ban Sunglasses

As a woman in my late 20’s I’m beginning to realize how important it is to cover my eyes from the sun (answer: to protect my eyes from harmful UV rays). Over the years, not only have I learned that proper eye-wear can help reduce the onset of wrinkles (and sun damage), I’ve also learned that everyone looks better with sunglasses on, especially when they wear glasses that are the correct shape for their face. There are SO many great brands in sunglasses available these days – come to think of it, it’s sad how quickly sun glass companies pop up an disappear (however it does seem like an easy accessory to produce).

My favorite brand in sunglasses is Ray-Ban, founded in 1937 by Bausch & Lomb. Quick history lesson on Ray-Bans: members of the United States Army Air Corps have worn Ray Ban Aviator Sunglasses since World War II.

I think it’s safe to say ray ban sunglasses will be around for the long haul, not only based on its history, but their ability to set sunglass trends as they did with Wayfarer sunglasses.

Ray-Ban put out a fantastic Spring/Summer 2011 collection called ‘The Icons’.  It’s a collection of iconic sunglasses and eyeglass designs from previous decades that are brought back by popular demand. The collection includes a re-release of the legendary cat eye sunglasses from the 1980s along with a reinterpretation of the Vagabond glasses of the 1960s. My favorite of all is the John Lennon style small rounded style. And of course the Aviator, we all know this style of sunglasses in a must have!

Here are a couple of my favorite glasses:image of Ray-Ban-gold-aviators

Too lazy to go to the store…but not sure what shape of sunglasses works for you? There are many sites, including Mister Spex that allow users to upload photos of themselves to help them decide what they will look best in. I suggest you try this option before you invest in your next pair of glasses.

My Perfect Red Lipstick by Illamasqua

I’m not sure how it happened, but lately my party wardrobe is very 50’s style oriented. Wait! I do know how it happened, it’s all Style Bust’s fault! I read an interview with Kimo of Effie’s Heart, checked out their website and ended up buying the Dolce Vita dress (click here to see interview). After that I bought another dress in a similar style, then another and tomorrow I’ll be picking up a custom-made one. It just snowballed.

I already have the black hair going for me and in order to get those curls that look like waves I’ve been using a clipless curling iron. To complete the look I just needed the perfect red lipstick. This is one of the most difficult colors to shop for, I currently own 8 different red lipsticks I don’t use because they were just not right. Too dark, too light, too orange, too pink, too glossy, etc.

I got all dressed up, hair, makeup, the works except for the lipstick. Went to Sephora and put myself in their hands. It didn’t take too long to find a lipstick that was perfect for me, but it was fun to try several of them. Here are the ones that I liked, but didn’t make the cut.

Illamasqua – Maneater (matte classic red)

The ultimate winner was a lipstick by Illamasqua.

Known for their intense colors and dramatic makeup, Illamasqua is your go-to brand for nighttime makeup—whether it’s an evening out at the opera or the dance club. Conceived amidst the dark drama of Berlin in the 20s, Illamasqua was developed by professional makeup artists and launched in 2008 in the U.K. Embraced by celebs and alternative cultures alike, their colors allow you to express your most daring, boldest, and most intense sides with professional nighttime makeup that’s richly pigmented and long lasting.

It glided on very smoothly and since I was already dressed up I met some friends at an Irish Pub, where I had two beers, one glass of water and later one coffee without having to re-apply the lipstick and without feeling the lipstick dry or flaky. My red color is called Box.

Because this color has blue undertones it also brightens my face and teeth. I adore it! This is the perfect red lipstick for me. Here’s a pic of me wearing the color, didn’t do a close up of the lips, but you can still see the effect.

Don’t loose hope, your perfect red lipstick is out there waiting for you to discover it! Have fun looking!

Here’s an update to this post. A week after I bought the lipstick I did a photo shoot just for fun using my cute dresses and lipstick and wouldn’t you know it, my photographer took a close up of my lips.

Taiwan’s Lying Down Game

I found this story on about “girls lying face down in the streets” chinaSMACK.  These photographs are of two young girls in Taiwan, “Jinyu” 25-years-old in Taipei and “Karren” 28-years-old in Taichung. They apparently love photography.

This activity is known as planking” and that there are also other names like “the lying down game” or “facedowns“. I’m not sure the activity/game will catch on here in the states, but I thought some of the photographs were compelling enough o share here.

A little bit of luxury: Q & A with Christine Campbell of Crimson Mim

Here at StyleBust we love learning about new products, new trends and best of all a great boutique.  We recently heard about Crimson Mim, a women’s boutique located in Silicon Valley, that carries designers that you typically wouldn’t find in suburbia.

I had the pleasure to ask Christine Campbell, the owner of Crimson Mim a few questions about her inspirations and what it’s like owning and operating her two Crimson Mim locations.

Christine Campbell and CeCe Telesco

StyleBust: How did the opening of your boutique, Crimson Mim come about?  What was your a-ha! moment?

Cristine Campbell: I was approaching 40 and feeling unfulfilled and ready to move on from my high tech career. I challenged myself to take the leap and change both my career and industry. During my time in Silicon Valley, I bemoaned the absence of shopping options outside of the “usual suspects.” So with the confidence (or hubris) to go it alone and my entrepreneurial background,  I decided to enter the industry I’d always admired and pursued from afar – fashion.  I did my research and determined that opening an independent boutique was the best business decision.

I love the name of your boutique, where does the name come from?

Crimson Mim is named for my beloved grandmother Miriam, who was known as Mim, and my favorite color  – crimson. I wanted everything about the store to evoke something personal and meaningful, much like the emotional connection we strive to make with our customers.

You recently opened a second Crimson Mim in Palo Alto.  Congratulations! Are the two locations similar?  What can we expect when visiting each of the boutiques?

Thank you! While Crimson Mim in Palo Alto is similar in size (989-square-feet) to the store in Los Altos, the interior is quite different. In Palo Alto we’re playing up the 50-year-old history of the space, remaining true to its heritage and architectural integrity. We kept the original concrete floors, which remind me of tree rings because you can see every ‘footprint’ of what was there before, along with wood inlays the previous owner installed. The ceilings feature exposed beams and a number of skylights which allow incredible natural light to stream through. The entire space is painted antique white to highlight the gorgeous colors and textures of our merchandise. Vintage furniture and zebra rugs complete the décor.

We focus on the same customer in both locations, but we view Palo Alto as the “big sister” if you will of Crimson Mim in Los Altos. The apparel is slightly more formal in Palo Alto and the merchandise is different in each location. Six plus years ago when we opened in Los Altos, we focused on emerging designers, such as 3.1 Phillip Lim, Loeffler Randall and Trina Turk, that have since become well-known, established brands. We hope to do the same in the Palo Alto location, with such up-and-coming lines as Whit, Caron Callahan and Harvey Faircloth.

Who is the Crimson Mim customer?

Our customer is really varied – she is a student at Stanford (right across the street from us) or her mother, who might be an executive at a Silicon Valley technology company…. And we help our customers find items for work, travel, dinners out, special occasion and every day. Our customer is highly educated and well-traveled, and seeks out different and unique items. Cookie cutter / mass is not as appealing to this woman as fashion that is as unique and globally influenced as she is. At the same time, this is a professional woman who is searching for items to wear to work, so things have to be professional and wearable.

You seem like a very “hands-on” boutique owner.  What is a typical day (if there is one) like for you?

You’re right! I’m very hands-on. In this industry and in this environment, it’s so important to be involved on a daily basis. While no day is typical, I tracked what I did on Thursday, May 5th. On Thursdays I come in early to get accounting and financial work done before we open. I also did an hour long pr / marketing strategy call. Then, I was on the floor by myself all day in our Los Altos store, because it was the birthday of the sales associate who normally works with me on Thursdays and I gave her the day off. So, from 10am to 7pm, I helped customers on the floor – making suggestions and recommendations, putting outfits together, giving style advice and selling. In between customers I wrote and answered customer and vendor emails, worked on inventory management, took photos of our new arrivals (ALC and Graham & Spencer) for our Facebook page and discussed daily to do’s with our manager of marketing and e-commerce.

A certain percentage of my time is spent on buying trips, but we’re between seasons now, so the next time I’ll travel to buy is in September at which time I’ll be traveling to New York

How do you decide which designers to carry in your store?

I buy for our customer and look for items she is going to love, will work for her life, that represent great value, and are not widely available. She doesn’t want to see herself coming and going. I ask myself: will this item work in her wardrobe (ie – timeless and classic with a twist)? Is the fit good? Are the fabrics, textures, shapes, rich, gorgeous, distinctive? Can our woman wear this item to work? Does the item represent great value (ie – will they be happily surprised by the price?)? Our customers tell us the items they buy from us are their favorites, the things they wear the most, that they receive the most compliments on – so we’re always on the lookout for those special pieces to continue to make our customers happy. So, if a designer meets all of this criteria, and I love their line and I think we’ll do well with them, and they have a good industry reputation, we’ll consider them!

What are some of your favorite trends for Spring/Summer 2011?  Can we find any of those trends in either Crimson Mim location?

A couple of our favorite trends for Spring/ Summer 2011 are color and long skirts and dresses:
There are so many gorgeous colors for spring, it’s easy to update a wardrobe, by adding a coral blouse or a cobalt dress or a bright red skirt.  If the woman is fearful / concerned to add a colorful garment, we encourage her to go with a colorful shoe. We have orchid colored sandals from Loeffler Randall that are so surprisingly versatile – this pop of color adds excitement to ensembles in navy, white, grey, beige, nude, and any combination thereof.
The other trend I’m in love with is long skirts / dresses. This is a fresh way to update a wardrobe. The silhouette is interesting and draws your eye because this trend hasn’t become ubiquitous in the Bay Area. It’s a chic way to get dressed, it’s as versatile as wearing a pair of jeans, it’s a way to update the tops, cardis and jackets of your wardrobe, and it’s a way to wear your newe, chunkier flatforms and clogs. We have long skirts and dresses from Rachel Comey, ALC, Harvey Faircloth and Velvet (for the more casual version….)

Do you have any favorite fashion designers or fashion icons?

I just saw the Balenciaga exhibit at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. This show blew my mind and is already inspiring me – I didn’t know he invented silk gazar to create silhouettes that stood away from the body. I love clothing that has a distinctive silhouette and designers we carry such as Gary Graham, Rachel Comey and Whit all play with silhouette.
In terms of fashion icons, I love Loulou de la Falaise, Yves St. Laurent’s muse. She is so chic and is a master of layering jewelry, fabrics and prints. Ines de la Fressange, another French fashion professional always ever-so-chic. She just walked for Karl Lagerfield’s spring 2011 Chanel show, at the age of 53 – so inspiring!

For aspiring boutique owners out there, what advice can you give? Anything to be aware of?

My best advice for aspiring boutique owners is to double and triple check your assumptions and numbers before you commit to all of the financial and time obligations that owning a boutique requires. Also, be flexible, because once you open, some of your ideas will be tested and you’ll have to change things based on what your customer wants!

A huge thank you to Christine for taking the time out of her hectic schedule to answer a few questions and give a very good reason to start shopping in the suburbs!

A new survey from FITNESS magazine reveals that women are bringing body issues with them to the beach. 80% of women polled for the magazine’s swimsuit survey say they feel other women are judging them when they wear a bathing suit and 48% say they’d only feel confident flaunting a bikini after losing more than 20 pounds.

FITNESS magazine polled women ages 18 and over to get the scoop on how they really feel about swimsuit season, what celebrity body they are dying to have and what they would give up to have a swimsuit model’s body. The results appear in the June 2011 issue, on stands May 17th.

An excerpt from the FITNESS Swimsuit Survey results:

Hollywood’s Best Beach Bods

  • Cameron Diaz—11%

Other Women, The #1 Beach Nightmare

  • 89% of women rated other women as the toughest swimsuit critics on the beach
  • 60% of women admitted feeling less in shape compared to other women on the beach
  • 53% of women say seeing a woman with a perfect body on the beach raises negative feelings of envy and insecurity
  • 32% of women surveyed named their boyfriend/husband as the person they trust most to give an honest opinion on how they look in their swimsuit.

Body Language

  • 86% of women feel sexier wearing lingerie than a bikini

  • 40% of women say their favorite body part to flaunt at the beach is their cleavage

“The survey results shed light on the complicated relationship women have with their bodies and how much time is spent worrying about what other women think…It is so important to make sure women are empowered to embrace their imperfections and celebrate their bodies-no matter what shape or size.” says Betty Wong, Editor-in-Chief of FITNESS.

3 Makeup Trends for Summer 2011

We need not forget that looking fabulous is about much more than wearing the latest trends in fashion, there are also strong trends each year in makeup. I’ve scoured the web for some of the best makeup looks to bring our Style Bust readers the Top 3 Makeup Trends for Summer 2011. By following these three makeup trends you’ll present yourself as the trendy, fashionable lady you are!

#1: Strong Eyebrows

Strong eyebrows have been a big look for the runway this year. When your eyebrows are shaped and groomed correctly, they can give your face a whole new look – not to mention draw attention to your eyes. If you have been a little over zealous with the tweezers, try an eyebrow shadow to fill in the gaps or try using eyebrow stencils as an easy way of shaping your brows.

#2: Dewy Skin

Summer is the prefect time to pull off the dewy skin look. Choose makeups that create a glow or shimmer when applied to your skin. Pick a foundation that offers good coverage and with a non-matte finish. If you have far skin you should try silvery tones. For olive skin choose peach or gold tones.

#3: Bright Lips

During the day many women choose a natural look for their lips. You shouldn’t be afraid to add lip color for some added impact. Popular shades include red, pink, fuchsia and orange this season. Use a liquid lipstick sealer to help keep your color all day long.

Women’s Watches and Bracelets Trends

Unless you live under a rock, you’rre probably aware of the accessories trend of layering oversized watches and bracelets (as pictured below). The look has been persistent on street style blogs, runways and fashion magazine alike. Women are stacking their wrists with mismatched materials, finishes, colors, band widths, etc. The look can be overdone VERY quickly, so ladies be cautious about the other accessories (ie. rings, necklaces and earrings) you wear with the stacked wrist look.

At the center of the stacked wrist is, of course the watch. The latest trend in watches for women has a definite masculine vibe. The most popular watches have big watch faces with simple masculine bands in metal, leather, or plastic. There are also large faced watches adorned with stones to create a more feminine feel.  A newer material hitting the watch trend is ceramic. Ladies Swatch watches and Fossil watches now come in ceramic finishes. For a more causal look, opt for a plastic watch. Plastic watches are inexpensive and come in a variety of colors so you can coordinate them with your summer attire.

No matter what style of watch you choose wear your watch with a nice stack of bangles and bracelets for an extra chic look – here are a couple of my favorite looks.

ghd Stylers

One of the things I always believe in is that you get what you pay for in everything from cosmetics, clothing, shoes, hair products and stylers. Recently ghd gold series stylers came to my attention and now that I know more about them I’m aching to use one.
Ghd (acronym for “good hair day”) has been around for a decade with styling tools that made waves in the hair industry. Fast forward to today and you will find the gold series styler which is a more advanced take on the classic ghd styler.  The professional gold styler uses ghd’s latest heat technology. With a rounded barrel to create gorgeous curls, waves or flicks, as well as perfect straight styles for all hair types.

ghd_pic

As I mentioned before, I haven’t tried the styler personally so I checked several sites to browse through their reviews and with hundreds of reviews these stylers consistently receive 4 to 5 stars; in spite of the fact that they’re not on the cheap side since each one costs over $200.
You can purchase ghd stylers at Sephora or selected salons, but if you want an extra kick, check out their limited collection Iconic Eras of Style, exclusively on their website.
