Summer 2010 Worst Trend
As the summer of 2010 comes to a beautiful close, I reflect on all of the successful fashion trends that were embraced. Jumpsuits made a glorious come back while harem pants made a splash that no one saw coming! I was recently looking at some other style blogs and I came across someone’s list of the worst trends this summer. I was blown away because everything the blogger listed, I loved! Printed pants? All for them! Ripped jeans? That should be the trademark of my generation! I admit there was one that I had never even heard of (rabbit ears!?), but other than that I found myself saying to myself “but I like that!”. There was only one I had to agree with… the boot sandal. Although I haven’t seen them in action very often, the few times I have has made me do a double take.
Are they this years crocs? I don’t know if I would go that far. They don’t have the same cult following and they aren’t THAT ugly. But I would say, in my humble opinion, that the boot sandal is the worst summer 2010 trend. With that being said… they really aren’t all that terrible.. so that just goes to show that fashion trends had a good summer this year!
Ideas from IKEA: I prefer the word ‘frugal,’ thank you very much
Finally! My 2011 IKEA catalog came in the mail! With a generous glossy, full-color 300+ pages of home furnishings amazingness, it did not disappoint. I pored over it, impressed with the company’s commitment to innovation, an environmentally-friendly mindset, and affordable design. Now, being from Kansas City, Missouri–with the nearest IKEA in Chicago–I’ve never actually been to an IKEA store. I’ve heard about them, I’ve read about them, and I’ve seen one on TV (from this one scene from 500 Days of Summer, a movie that I’ve only seen bits of), but never have I actually acquired the IKEA shopping experience. Hopefully, this will change next month when college starts up again, and my roommates and I hit up the IKEA in Ohio for the purpose of furnishing our 4 bedroom townhouse apartment. We’re college students with limited funds; therefore, our budget ranges from “Hey! Pull over! There’s a plaid armchair by the side of the road!” to “Please, sir. The stuffing is coming out a bit. Surely you can give us a discount.”
Even though we will be cutting some serious cost, style does not have to be completely sacrificed. Luckily for the design-conscious and financially-unconscious, I found some affordable (for others), stylish pieces from IKEA that looks like they cost much more than they actually do. Here’s a small sample. Take a look. (Wanna check out the catalog yourself? Visit IKEA’s Online Catalog.)
Tips for the design and budget frustrated: Even if your stuff is crappy and inexpensive, keeping your house clutter-free and purposeful will result in a space that will look better than the vast majority’s. Cherish what you have and make it a point to feel good about everything you buy. Treat and arrange everything as if they were all expensive designer pieces. Because one day they will be.

Secret to finding your new favorite band!
I think it’s necessary to take the liberty to talk a little bit about opening bands on this blog. I’m sure it’s blatantly obvious how much I appreciate what I call the ‘little guys’. Which by my definition is a talented band with a ridiculous amount of passion and enthusiasm for just making music. Usually they have a small audience but one that is dedicated to the bands movement. These are the bands that I always appreciate. These are the bands that I recommend to my friends who always seem to wonder, “where’d you find these guys?” I am always so proud of my discoveries and very often after I share these gems with my friends, shortly after everyone is talking about them. If the music business today was anything like it was in the late 80’s and 90’s, I know that I would have started my career at a label and been the best A&R person, swimming in my millions of dollars. But as I’ve talked about before, the music biz really isn’t anything like it used to be. Nevertheless it’s kinda cool to be in the know with the undiscovered bands. Today I’m willing to tell everyone my secret on where I find a lot of the talent.
Let’s think about show nights. You and your friends decide to do dinner, and get drinks. Before you know it’s around the time that the doors are opening to the venue. You are of course having a good time catching up and hanging out with your buddies, and hey you’ve never even heard of the first band playing. Not too mention you find it obnoxious to have to listen to 3 bands that you might not like before you get to see the act that you came there for. I get it, I get this feeling plenty of times too, and I’m completely guilty of this during Lollapalooza. I don’t like to take the chance of missing a band that I could potentially fall in love with. I would say that for the majority of tours, the headliner chooses their supporting acts. Now this isn’t always the case, when I was at Live Nation there were often times that we had to gather supporting acts for particular shows. But even so, the opening acts are generally handpicked to cater to the particular audience. Chances are if you go into a show with an open mind you’re going to discover a band that you truly like.
I’m dying to share with everyone my obsession this week. I have not seen him in concert, yet. However, he is now going to be on Hanson’s third leg of their Shout It Out tour. Naturally this sparked my curiosity. Then I saw a tweet from TWLOHA saying he was going to perform at one of their events. For those of you unfamiliar with TWLOHA – it’s a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. I will actually write my entire next blog about that movement. In my world, Hanson and TWLOHA, I don’t know if I could find any better sources for music. Jarrod Gorbel is the lead vocalist for an indie rock band, The Honorary Title from… you guessed it, Brooklyn, NY. He released a solo EP in 2009 and now there’s buzz that the band is no longer together, I know that Jarrod Gorbel has officially played his last show with the band.. I don’t have that full story, but this video is so major I have to share it.
Cargo Wet/Dry Foundation
In 1996, CARGO founder Hana Zalzal set out to create a professional color cosmetic line that top makeup artists would covet, yet would be easy enough for all women to enjoy. Working with some of the most talented make-up artists in the business, CARGO launched a multitude of award-winning products, never-before-seen packaging, and groundbreaking formulas.
I tried it on myself, and I love it, really covered my pores and made my skin tone even. The packaging is really cool as well, when you open the compact you see the powder and the mirror, which opens up and stores the applicator.
You can find the Wet/Dry Foundation in several stores, such as Sephora inside JC Penney and other independent retailers. The foundation retails for $28 dollars and Cargo does not test on animals.
How Does this Taste?
Flipping through a magazine or typing Diet in Google’s search engine will reveal well over 100 posts about “live by diets” for “die hard bodies.” I’m an eighties baby, and my fascination with food started with my mother. Each week, there was a new cook book or can of chocolate Slim Fast on the kitchen counter. From then, DIET has been a major area of interest and since trends are ever-changing, I will always have something new to research and obsess about.
Meat vs. Raw:
Atkins – We are all familiar with this diet. The watered down instructions are to eat meat and low carb vegetables. ONLY. Over the years amended versions have popped up, but the goal is to push your body into ketosis. Then the body will start to munch on fat reserves and convert them to ketones. Weight drops off quickly, but beware. There can be a significant amount of muscle loss, too. I’d know. I did the Atkins diet years ago and swore I’d lost a good two inches from my calf muscles. My legs were swimming in my knee-high boots!
Fruitarians and Vegan Raw Foodist – would absolutely clench at the mention of Atkins. Raw foodies have blamed toxins, poor enzyme preservation, and pesticides for weight gain not carbohydrates. Cooking foods over 116 degrees is said to destroy or alter its mineral make up. There are more foods on this diet than popular belief. Beans, rice, millet, sprouts and buckwheat can be soaked and safely consumed. I completed a 30 day raw food challenge in 2008. Social events were the worst!!!!! Besides passing up finger foods and having a hefty grocery bill from creating raw cheesecake and lasagna (which I had to toss out), I enjoyed the clean, renewed feeling of eating mostly organic live cuisines.
I have fallen victim to countless hours of research on food fuel. Yet, I am still surprised by some of the diet plans I’ve seen and subsequently attempted:
Some New New:
Negative Calorie Diet aka Eating Your way to weight loss – Celery, asparagus, lettuce, broccoli, beets, onions, and cabbage are all said to have a negative caloric property. If celery only has 15 calories in it, but takes 30 calories to digest, by eating a few celery stalks more fuel is used than it takes to absorb the celery. In turn, (and in theory) losing weight and burning calories is achieved by eating more. I suspect that ingesting some of the listed foods promote weight loss because they are diuretics.
Mono Diet – Pick one food and eat it. Preferably something deemed healthy, but I suppose eating only French Fries every Wednesday will suffice. This past Sunday I had a watermelon feast and ate 2 mono meals of watermelon meat. Afterwards, I felt light and satisfied…and during sleep I dreamt of eating cornbread with sugar sprinkled over it.
Really:
Kangatarian – I have not tried this one…but I probably would if I had access to hopping meat. Kangatarians only eat kangaroo meat. Enough…
Breatharianism – is a related concept to Inedia, in which believers claim that life can be sustained without food and possibly water. No more tall glasses of Uptowns, rosemary chicken, or greek yogurt sprinkled with ground flax seeds.
It’s believed, that humans can flourish solely by Prana (the vital life force in Hinduism), or according to some, by the energy in sunlight (in Ayurveda, sunlight is one of the main sources of Prana). Throughout history, Hira Ratan Manek, Prahlad Jani, and The Fasting Girls (Catherine of Siena, Lidwina of Schiedam, Mollie Fancher and Therese Neumann) were all spectacles of the growing communities interest in non-eating.
While there is no verified scientific support for these claims, some promote the practices of Breatharianism as a skill which can be learned through specific techniques. Jasmuheen, a leading expert of Breatharianism in the 1990’s received great ridicule after several of her followers starved to death after an extended period of non-eating. Jasmuheen insisted that some of these deaths were brought on by a psycho-spiritual, rather than physiologic deprivation. I love food; the way it feels on my tongue, how it looks on a stranger’s plate. I even enjoy staring into my lover’s mouth as he chews breakfast…but I am still very intrigued by non-eaters. I visited several naturopathic and spiritual advisors and asked them about Breatharians. I needed to find one in Atlanta and quick! The answers varied; some dismissed it to severe and delusional cases of anorexia nervosa and one chiropractor said he’d met a “gang of Breatharians at a conference and around midnight saw them stuffing handfuls of grapefruits and Frito Lays into their mouths in the hotel hallway.”
With whatever diet choices you make, measure your success on how that food makes you feel. Some people can flourish on fried chicken and some cannot! For help on settling into a healthy eating plan visit Fit Day and Nutrition.gov.
Style Icon: Drew Barrymore
For some time now, I’ve been paying attention to Drew Barrymore’s style. Sure, she’s worn some questionable outfits, but for the most part her look this year has been casual, and always cool!
Drew’s overall style is effortlessly chic…you can tell she dresses to fit her personality, because she’s always so confident (even when she is channeling the 80’s)!
Keep and eye out for Drew Barrymore this month…with her new movie Going the Distance, you’ll see her all over celebrity magazines and late night talk shows. Pay attention to her style…I think you’ll like what you see!
Overstock.com Launches Eziba.com, a Private Sale Site
Overstock.com unveiled Eziba.com earlier this week. Eziba is an exclusive, flash sale site featuring the latest home decor products from many leading brands, at great prices. If you’ve been living under a rock, I’ll fill you in on how Flash Sales Sites work, the site works with retailers and brands to create a short term sale that usually lasts a couple of days max, and is selling items near 50% of their original retail price. Established sales sites include Gilt Groupe, One Kings Lane, Ideeli, Ruelala and Hautelook (Beyond the Rack is crap…don’t even register to be a member, it’s not worth it).
The best part about Eziba.com is they can leverage some of the benefits of Overstock.com, such as $2.95 for shipping on ALL orders. Most sales sites charge $10 for shipping regardless of weight or price of your order, so this is a big win for Eziba – also remember Eziba is selling home decor, which obviously, tends to be heavier than um say a little black dress.
Oh, and if you’re already an existing Overstock.com member just sign in using your current username and password and start shopping!

Gucci Guilty Commercial by director Frank Miller
If you’re a comic book reader, a graphic novel reader or a popular movie buff, you would probably be able to quickly identify the mastermind, Frank Miller, behind Gucci’s new commercial. Not only is the commercial directed by a well known guy, it also stars two fairly well known actors – the lovely Evan Rachel Wood and Chris Evans, with a soundtrack by Friendly Fires. This commercial is all about “the new fragrance for her” called Gucci Guilty.
The 60-second commercial (Gucci claim’s its a film…but who are they kidding) will be shown exclusively at the MTV music awards. The commercial was shot at Cinecitta’ Studios in Rome, which is the legendary home of Italian cinema. Wood speeds through the night in an exquisite 1953 Jaguar C-Type. The plot unfolds to the strains of Depeche Mode’s ‘Strangelove’, given a haunting new rendition by London-based band Friendly Fires. Wood plays the role opposite leading man Chris Evans with a bewitching, vivacious presence that evokes the seductive power of the fragrance.
