Menswear Makes a Comeback in Women’s Fashion
There is a yo-yo effect between ultra feminine and masculine influences in women’s fashion and each season, the balance is shifted to one side or the other. This season, menswear has made a splash and it’s hard to argue that this laidback and sophisticated trend is anything but ultra chic.
This trend can be hard to wear if you’re not careful. It can come across very “power-suit” and “formal”. The key to wearing this trend is well fitting pieces like a stand out blazer or a bowtie and incorporating it into your style, not letting it overwhelm your daily outfits. You want to look like you raided your husband’s, boyfriend’s, or brother’s closet for something to give the perfect final touch to your outfit, not because you needed to borrow a complete outfit.
If you are not brave enough to dive into broad shoulder blazers, long pressed work shirts, or even menswear inspired slacks… try out masculine shoes. Urban Outfitters has an amazing assortment of shoes that can add just enough “manliness” to any ultra feminine outfit.
This spring/summer trend is so easy to wear daily that it’s hard to pass up! If you are iffy about going out and buying brand new pieces to add to your closet, try a thrift store or ask to borrow something from a male in your life. I can promise that if you make an investment in a neutral but stylish menswear inspired basic, you will never regret it and will be able to wear it every season.
One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Treasure
Plastic bags have pretty much been banned in San Francisco since 2007, but we still see these totes everywhere (floating around the streets, at your local corner store, stuffed under your kitchen sink, flapping from trees). Yes, many plastic bags are reused every day (used to pick up your dogs poo, they line your trash cans, and are used as lunch bags). But they are still bad for the environment and take months to hundreds of years to decompose.
Well, having that said, Josh Blackwell (a New York based artist) sees the beauty of these everyday mass-produced disposable objects. He uses plastics bags as canvases to apply embroidery in simple patterns! Ok…so, he’s not really saving the planet, but at least he’s aware.
I’m sure most of you aren’t going to go home and embroider your plastic bags, but maybe think twice when your local grocer asks, “do you need a bag?”
Roll Up you Khakis for Spring and Summer
Traditionally cut of lightweight yet durable cotton, chinos were introduced through the US Army during the 1900 Boxer Rebellion in China. It’s not coincidence that ‘chinos’ is a derivative of the Spanish word “Chinese.” Today, chinos are the perfect warm weather alternative to jeans. For Spring and Summer 2010 chinos look is effortlessly stylish and versatile with skinny and wide leg silhouettes to choose from in cream, khaki, tan, olive and gray colors. Pairing you cuffed chinos with flats for the office keeps the look very casual, swamping the flats for heels or platforms will dress them right up for evening.
48 Hour Magazine
Anyone who’s ever worked for a magazine knows that putting together an issue involves extensive interviews, fact checking, loads of red pen marks and photo retouching. One collective of writers and publishers decided to execute the ultimate experiment in editorial adrenaline by constructing a periodical in just 48 hours, called the 48 Hour Magainze.
A raucous experiment in using new tools to erase media’s old limits
48Hour Magazine’s Issue Zero kicked off on May 7th, when its editorial board unveiled the theme “Hustle”, for which potential contributors had exactly 24 hours to create and submit their work. In just 24 more hours, content was edited, designed and printed into a polished paper magazine and companion website. It’s certainly not in keeping with the slow trend, but the extraction of the aforementioned stress factors makes working on fast forward seem like not such a bad idea.

Military, again?
Yes…I know Summer is about to begin, but I’m ready for Fall (the most exciting season in fashion)!
One of my favorite trends for Fall, is the military/aviator-inspired look. I know we’ve been seeing this trend since 2008, but this season the look is more subtle and all about functionality and utility. And less of the pomp and ceremony look we’ve seen in the past.
Aren’t you excited for Fall 2010?
The ‘Tights as Pants’ Debate.
Shall we define what “tights” are? We must in order to settle this issue because many people have different ideas on what the true definition of this infamous clothing article entails. By definition, tights are of clothing that cover from the waist to the ankles and can be either sheer or opaque. They are pant-like in nature yet are traditionally covered by skirts, shorts, or dresses. Traditionally they are worn under other garments but there is a trend that is sweeping the world and has sparked controversy wherever its been spotted in action…
Tights as pants. No covers, just a shirt and some tights.
Let me start off by saying that I have been wearing LEGGINGS as pants since I discovered that skinny jeans will never quite fit my body right (I am too short and my hips are too wide for the sizes that are available). The difference is that my tights (or leggings, whatever) of choice have always been opaque and thick in nature (American Apparel knows how to make them right). Typically leggings are also footless, where as tights have feet but this is not always the case. At first I was appalled at the idea of someone wearing shear tights, A.K.A pantyhose, as pants in public but through further investigation I find that when done tastefully… it really isn’t so bad.
exhibit A.
But when it is done wrong, boy is it wrong. Exhibit B.
So should tights be worn as pants? I believe it should be judged on a case-by-case basis. I personally follow one key trick: the underwear check. If my panties are on display, then I say “no way!”. Some people are a little less inhibited than that and who is to say that they cant put the drawers out for everyone to see as long as the nether regions are covered?
But like every trend, there has been incredible backlash. Statements, blogs, and even websites have been dedicated to the ending of this trend. If you ask me, the effort put into all of this is a little too much (the energy should be redirected into banning crocs). But people are outraged and where this is outrage, there is an internet source to support it.
Leggings, tights, pants, or whatever you choose to cover your booty up with… its your business. As long as the person is comfortable, that is all that matters. I for one would rather see someone wearing tights as pants than see someone covering up calf length tights with a medium length skirt (so unflattering), but that’s just me. So to settle this debate, I say to each their own! And if you don’t like the trend then keep wearing your denim or corduroy or whatever and let it die out like every trend before it
Riccardo Tisci coed fashion shoot for Givenchy
Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci has taken the whole idea of “coed fashion shoot” to another level. Tisci is using a transexual model among the cast for the house’s fall-winter 2010 ad campaign. This transexual model is someone Tisci knows well: it’s his longtime personal assistant and, former fit model for his own line. Lea T.
While some women might find the edgy ads a matter of taste, Tisci explained that including a transgender person exemplifies the masculine-feminine dichotomy that has become one of his design signatures and follows coed casting for his Paris runway last March. The campaign includes dedicated images for Givenchy eyewear and watches, and Tisci said media budgets would increase in certain growth markets for the brand.
