NeoCon World’s Trade Fair in Review

It’s not too late to catch up on the year’s hottest new trends in home, workplace, and hospitality furnishing designs.

Every year, top industrial and furniture design firms from all over the world showcase their wares at the NeoCon World’s Trade Fair hosted at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. One of the biggest events in the interior design world with around 40,000 attendees, this year’s NeoCon, held from June 14-16, displayed thousands of new products from big companies and individual designers alike in over 700 exhibits. Roaming through the colorful and animated floors of the trade fair, one can see the concepts of lounge chairs, living room tables, office workstations, and lighting being stretched, remolded, and played with in every way imaginable. Here are some of this year’s highlights for and some of my favorites of the seating category. Who knows which of these fresh designs could be soon finding its way into spaces near you?

TMC Furniture’s cutting edge ImPrinted printing technique allows screen prints of photos, texts, and graphics to be applied to surfaces of chairs, lounge seating, and tables. So pretty!

Twist Chair by Sandler Seating. Twist and shout!

Adeo Chair by JANUS et Cie. So peaceful! So pure! So zen! Plus a place to store Nylon!

On Time by Sedia Systems. Anything with bold color is awesome. The seat folds up and sides fold in for easy stacking.

Dolce and Gabbana Cocktail

This month’s Men’s Fashion Week in Milan will mark the 20th anniversary of Dolce and Gabbana’s menswear collection, and to celebrate the fashion house will debut their very own signature martini!

In addition to the premiere of their custom cocktail, Dolce and Gabbana have been opening bars in their Milan and Shanghai locations to further their partnership with MARTINI, a Bacardi vermouth brand. This will be the fashion duo’s second co-branded product- the first being with Motorola in 2005 – and will be their introduction to the spirits industry.

No word yet on the name of the concoction or if the drink will even be a traditional martini, but Dolce and Gabbana are no strangers to extravagant launches. In 2006, the fashion house timed the opening of their first restaurant, Gold, to coincide with the closing of Milan’s Fashion Week.

The lavish, fittingly all gold interior was so well executed that I’m eager to check out these latest endeavors. Designed by Ferruccio Laviani, the super chic decor and modern layout of the bar attached to Dolce and Gabbana’s Shanghai store speaks to the luxury Domenico and Stefano have always embodied in their collections.

I’m not going to lie; I like to have a cocktail before a shopping adventure. Who doesn’t? There can be annoying crowds, unflattering mirrors in the fitting rooms, obnoxious sales people or worse, all of the above. I’ve always found it’s easier to deal with these threats with a slight buzz.

And, trust me, after over-indulging on Dolce and Gabbana’s latest fashion creations, you’re going to want this cocktail to take the edge off your bank statement!

Furniture by Tim Byrne

Tim Byrne designs and builds some amazing desks and tables that I thought would be worth sharing. The pieces are made from old industrial machines that most of us wouldn’t think of reconstructing into anything because, let’s face it, we’re not creative or awesome like Tim Bryne. He typically combines his desks and tables with glass, African mahogany, Rosewood to make pieces that are truly amazing for any home to have.

NIKE Crayons by Diem Chau & W+K

The Crayola Crayon carver, Diem Chau was commissioned by Wieden + Kennedy to carve 66 crayons for this year’s Nike World Cup: The Write the Future Press Kit (following their sick commercial). A nice idea and packaging for an unforgettable press kit.

The clam-shell presentation box. The contents: the wooden box carrier also serves as the crayon’s base.

The crayon players in their base.

Wieden + Kennedy chose a metallic/stone color theme for the players. Above is a close up of the 6 figures that are in each kit.

Book Bust: Karl Lagerfeld for Les 3 Suisses

Not being French, or growing up reading through the famous French mail-order catalog: Les 3 Suisses: A French Fashion Story, I was first introduced to this catalog when the story hit that Chanel and Fendi Creative Director, Karl Lagerfeld shot some pages for this mass business of fashion catalog. From luxury to mass market, the Kaiser has covered all areas of our lives.

For the catalog, Karl worked with top model Iris Strubegger to add some high value to the smallest priced clothes (and production budget) he’s had to work with in his entire “Fashion photographer life”.

By the looks of it, Karl could easily fool people into believing this was an expensive shoot, showcasing the high end pieces from his ready to wear collection.

There goes Karl, making something as ridiculous as a dryer look luxurious.

Hanes x Jet Blue

Apparel maker Hanes is partnering with JetBlue Airways during the month of June to gift customers on overnight JetBlue flights with complimentary Hanes Lay Flat Collar Undershirts. (I’m not exactly sure what the ladies are supposed to do with this men’s shirt – especially if their single, or lesbian.)

The t-shirts are an added component of JetBlue’s complimentary Shut-Eye Service that features a “Snooze Kit” with earplugs, eyeshades, and “good morning” hot towel service. In addition to the t-shirts, Hanes said it will also screen new airplane-themed ads on JetBlue’s PlusTV network which airs on all United States domestic flights during June, and is currently offering visitors to its Facebook fan page a chance to enter a weekly drawing to win two JetBlue round-trip travel certificates and a Hanes.com gift card. “Hanes has always been committed to providing superior comfort, which is why we are constantly creating new innovations that make people look and feel better,” said Sidney Falken, Senior Vice President, Hanes. “We are very excited about our new humorous airplane-themed ads, which communicate the benefits of our Hanes Lay Flat Collar Undershirts. Partnering with JetBlue Airways to display the ads and sample product seemed like a fun and relatable way to bring the marketing campaign to life.”

Louis Vuitton Maison in London

The Louis Vuitton Maison on New Bond Street in London opened its doors to the public today. Designed by architect Peter Marino, the establishment brings innovation, fashion and heritage under one roof.

As a reflection of the company’s long and proud tradition of collaborating with artists and purchasing art, Marino has designed the Maison (aka store) to resemble a collector’s home. The store is spread over three opulent floors and boasts a large selection of the fashion house’s products, a library, and work by heavyweight artists such as Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst and Gilbert and George.
