Sport Shinny Hair

When I’m asked to style a model’s hair or coif a bride’s updo I look to products that can offer her sleek grooming, fierce HOLD and mahhh-jor shine! Three indispensable styling tools I go to are: Mason Pearson Brush, L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray, and Moroccan Oil.

Mason Pearson Brush

You remember sitting at the vanity mirror watching your mother brush her hair, if she was anything like my mom she’d brush endlessly back & forth; some nights we would even count the strokes. It’s not surprising, “regular brushing is essential to the condition of your hair, it’s vital to your scalp and it increases blood flow to the roots therefore producing a healthy sheen and your styling aids don’t have to work as hard” – it’s that simple! Bottom line, the Mason Pearson Brush is uber popular because it rids us of “bad hair days”. This buttery tool was made in London, if you’re gonna discriminate you know the Brits know something about style…so no duh!, make this your cosmetic accessory.

L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray is a legend.

It has changed the hair game and the very reason for jaw dropping expressions. This gold can finds its way into all the top salons, hairstylist kits and bathroom cupboards. Only recent did the gold-can make a U.S. landing and boy were we clamouring for it. Why is it beloved, what’s the big frickin deal — because it holds like armour but can be easily brushed out in a matter of seconds, especially by your Mason Pearson Brush [shameless plug]; from there, you can be on-to-the-next STYLE! C’mon what hairspray allows you that kind of freedom? This spray is exceptional, the hair never looks stiff; price isn’t stiff either. Pick it up at your neighborhood Target, there’s even a mini size for the tepid shopper.

Morocccan Oil

Unless your blind, we’ve all seen the orange & screaming turquoise blue label; it’s undeniable and it’s sweeping the beauty industry by storm. It’s all over Twitter too, Tweet-Tweet and have you gone to their website? If not, you should. This oil hydrates, calms and smoothes your tresses without heavy build up. Sure others have made the claim but this really works. Whether you need to control the fizz, protect your hair color, intensify your curl, OR hydrate & restore healthy hair this baby delivers!

What’s the base: “ARGAN OIL” – nothing more nourishing – there, I said it.

The Moss Bath Rug “Larosée”

image of Larosee Moss Bath Mat

The thought of having moss growing in your bathroom isn’t normally associated with anything good, but not in this case. The Larosee Bath Mat ($64) promotes green living by growing moss in it. After your shower, the water on your body will absorb into the mat which promotes the growth of the moss rug. The soft flora of the mat makes it comfortable to stand on, it nicely massages your feet as you move on the rug. A bath mat that is green an massages your feet? What more could you ask for!

The wave-shaped edges of the rug allows you to connect more rugs together.

Rugby Holiday 2010 Lookbook

image of rugby holiday lookbook

Rugby Ralph Lauren launched the first batch of their Holiday 2010 collection in stores and at Rugby.com on October 13th. The collection features all the great preppy pieces we’ve grown to expect from Rugby; cargo pants, tweed jackets, blazers, cardigans and sweaters. Unfortunately nothing about the collection is really that new or cutting edge – Rugby is known for playing it safe, and that is what they’ve done once more with the Holiday collection.

There are a couple of pieces I especially like; the evergreen tree/reindeer womens sweater as well as the burgundy, yellow and black stripped mens blazer.

What do you like?

Fun. Concert Review

Hello Style Bust readers!  It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged, I went on a short sabbatical.  Now I’m back, refreshed and ready to share with you what’s been going on in the music world.  I have some amazing things in the works, especially for all you hip-hop and r&b fans.  The Chicago music scene is about to blow up and I’m going to be able to give you first hand insight to all of it.  Anyway, I’ll be able to give you more information next week as I make my return to Chicago.

Recently I shared with you a youtube video of Jarrod Gorbel.  I was fortunate enough to get to see him live a couple times this past week.  Last weekend I went to House of Blues Chicago and on Wednesday I was at the Blue Moose in Iowa City.  Jarrod Gorbel is touring with Steel Train and Fun.  House of Blues was the perfect environment for Gorbel.  He performs with one other woman, who’s an incredible violin player and has a beautiful voice.  They harmonize so well together.  It was truly one of the most beautiful performances I have ever seen or heard.

I have mentioned Steel Train on this blog a few times, always giving them praise.  On Saturday they were their usual selves, over the top, tons of energy, rocking out.  It’s what I love about them.  The crowd seemed impressed by them as well.  Wednesday they did a great job but they were a lot mellower.  But it was fitting for the audience because in Iowa City the crowd was mostly filled with preppy, university students who overall don’t know the first thing about a good punk-indie-rock band.   So taking it down a notch was a great way to introduce the crowd to their sound.  Steel Train is a fun band… however most people at both of these shows were there to see the band, fun.

Personally, I thought the band fun, was anything but a source of enjoyment.  I found the lead singer to be completely obnoxious with his hair flips and dressed like Bon Jovi, bouncing around the stage.  fun. has a pretty unique sound and I can completely understand why people like them, but they do attract a much younger crowd, who in my opinion just haven’t experienced great music yet… so they are impressed with just an average band.  The lead singer doesn’t play an instrument, which doesn’t bother me but ultimately that means that his voice is his best and main instrument.  If he’s only going to sing then he should at least be on key, he just wasn’t that good.

The best way to describe their music is a mix of Queen and the Rocket Summer.  I have enjoyed listening to their albums and they are uber creative.  I have spent much time contemplating why their live performance just didn’t impress me.  I think that they just have so many elements and layers in their music that it doesn’t translate as well live as it should.  I’m obsessed with their music video for Walking The Dog, and the song is played on the new Expedia commercial.  It’s definitely a song that gets stuck in your head and I guarantee after hearing the first keys you will recognize it.  However, I left early the show early on Saturday because I was annoyed with them, and it’s very rare when I leave a show early.  On Wednesday I was there for the entire set and their best song was a cover of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”  The lead singer has the perfect voice to cover Mick Jagger.  So, fun. gained some respect back with me when they pulled that out of their back pockets.

Anyway, I thought maybe when I saw them on Saturday I was just being a tough critic but on Wednesday they weren’t any more enjoyable.  I wouldn’t recommend seeing them live but you should check out their video for Walking The Dog, it’s fun.

A Vintage Nail Polish Collection by NARS

NARS recently launched their latest limited edition nail polish collection, this time in “Vintage Nail Shade.” These five metallic colors are named after iconic movies from the 1990’s. It’s kind of ridiculous that they are calling the colors vintage, because in my mind, we’re decades away from the 90’s becoming vintage.

The nail polishes are named: Full Metal Jacket, Zulu, Midnight Express, King Kong, and MASH. According to our archives, these nail colors originally debuted in the late nineties, though I certainly do not remember any of these colors, do you?

You can pick the Nars Nail Polishes up for $16 at a handful of department stores, here’s a link to the collection at Barneys.

Hembakat är Bäst from IKEA and Carl Kleiner

image of Hembakat är Bäst

IKEA has released a cookbook titled “Hembakat är Bäst” (translation: Homemade is Best). IKEA collaborated with photographer Carl Kleiner to produce this book, which hands down, has some of the best styling and photography for a cookbook. Hembakat är Bäst is filled with 30 recipes for baked goodies broken down by ingredient.

It’s pretty difficult for me to guess what baked good the ingredients photographed below belong to – but I find the images artists, so I thought I’d share them with you here!

There are some images of items you’ll recognize in the cookbook too. Now that I think about it, this cookbook could make a really great gift idea!

Ojon Hydrating Styling Cream

Previously I wrote about Ojon, an amazing company and its signature product the Restorative Hair Treatment. I have used it for several months and I love the results on my damaged hair. So I set off to try more of Ojon’s products.

Ojon Product Line

Having my hair protected all day with a leave-in styling treatment was in my mind when I decided to try the Hydrating Styling Cream.

Ojon Hydrating Styling Cream

I had mixed feelings about this product. It smells great, especially for a product you will be wearing all day, it’s lightweight and even though it does eliminate the frizz, the hair doesn’t feel weighed down. The first time I used it was on my damp hair, I let it dry naturally and then started styling with my flat iron. I wasn’t very happy with the results, it didn’t quite give me a sleek look and I ended up wearing my hair in a French braid instead.

The second time I used it, I put it on my damp hair, let it air dry and just slightly combed it afterwards. The result was my hair in my natural slightly wavy hair, neither straight nor curly. But I have to admit there was no frizz in sight and there was no need to use additional products.

So I would recommend Ojon’s Hydrating Styling Cream on people with really curly hair or those lucky ones who don’t need to do too much styling on it.

One stop Fall shopping at Etsy.com

Having trouble finding some of those must-have pieces for Fall?  Me too.  I have been searching for a good chunky sweater and a cape coat, which I know I can find at stores like H&M, but I want something more unique and special.

Rag & Bone, Vena Cava, VPL – Fall 2010

I found myself searching on Etsy.com, a site that I have a love/hate relationship with.  I love it because you can find pretty much anything you’re searching for, sellers can personalize their stores (so it seems like you’re visiting their personal website) and there will be no bidding wars, like on eBay.  And the only reason why I might dislike Etsy, is the amount of time I spend on the site (I tend to get sucked-in and forget what I was searching for in the first place)!  With all that said, Etsy is a goldmine for finding vintage pieces that channel current Fall 2010 runway looks.

1. Southwestern poncho – Vim and Vigor

2. Silk kimono style blouse – Something About Me

3. 1970’s secretary dress – Vintage Marmalade

4. Camel cape – More to Adore Vintage

5. Military – Mother Midnight Vintage

6. Baroque and Roll – Mary’s Menagerie

7. Minimalism – Vanity

If you’re missing a few key pieces for Fall, search Etsy by using keywords like; faux fur coats, military style jackets, silk blouses and camel color coats.  If you find yourself getting too overwhelmed or maybe a little lost, contact me ([email protected]) and I’ll help you find what you’re looking for!
