Selective Lifestyle Trends
To anyone studying or working in home decor, learning about trends in interior decorating is one of the most exciting parts of life. And it should be, aside from work, the home is where we spend the bulk of our time, and like clothing it needs to be a reflection of us. Style Bust searches the web for the latest and greatest trends for the home; our hope is that you can use some of our findings in the environment you’ve created at home!
Chad Koosman creates spectacular Christmas light show in Minnesota
A friend of mine, Chad Koosman, from Willmar High School (in Willmar, Minnesota) is raising money for Salvation Army. He’s created the biggest light show central Minnesota has ever seen!
Chad has a soft spot for helping people in need, which I vaguely remembered until I came across his amazing story on KARE 11, the Minneapolis news channel.
Please checkout the news story below, and Chad’s website: www.celebratethelight.net.
You can give to Chad’s online Red Kettle too!
About Chad
Growing up, I remember Chad was into a handful of extra circular activities. He worked really hard. He’s always been very entrepreneurial. I don’t remember a time when Chad wasn’t working during the nights and weekends. And he had so many ‘small businesses’ hardly any of us could remember everything he was involved in. He really loved to work! Chad was a bit of a rebel, he threw awesome parties while his parents were out of town. He lived in this huge house on the golf course (I think the only time I ever hit a golf ball was behind his parents house). Chad would often times invite me to skip school lunch with him; we’d hit up the local McDonald’s or Arby’s. The teachers and supervisors at school loved Chad, so skipping with him was usually a success. Chad could sweet talk his way out of almost anything! I have really fond memories of this guy, and it’s great to see him turn into such a giving man.
It’s sad, the most recent picture I have with Chad is from 2005. I think I’ve seen him twice since then.
Stay Indoors: Gifts for Her
As the days get shorter and nights get colder I become more interested in staying indoors during my free time. I know I’m not alone on this, so why not give your friends and girlfriends presents that make them enjoy hibernation a little more? These luxury items are things us girls feel guilty buying for ourselves – therefore they make fabulous gifts!
- New wine glasses are on everyone’s wish list. Get your girls Braided Pewter Stemware by Patrick Meyer $68.00. They will hold onto these non-traditional, artistic glasses for many holidays to come. The braided wine glasses are what I call ‘show stoppers’.
- If you have a friend who watches a ton of TV and movies at home the Camp Blanket Booty Buddy $78.00is an ideal gift for them. This poncho/blanket puts the slanket and snuggie to shame!
- If the home decor junkie is on your gift list, give them colored Chroma Candlestick holders $28. The colors and lacquer finish SCREAM 2011 home decor and fashion trends. This home decor junkie will really appreciate your understanding of color palettes.
- Do you have friends who love hard liquor? Class up these trashy friends with a Decanter and Shot Glasses Set $27.99. This set is simple and timeless.
- Um Leather Pillows $75-$179…these are to die for. I don’t think these will bring anyone comfort, but they will bring people joy because of their beauty and originality. This is a super safe gift bet in my opinion (unless your friend is a strict vegan).
- Your artistic and nature loving friends will appreciate some wall art like Natural by Dibec $25.00. Newsflash, Urban Outfitters collaborated with Society6 Artists to create a Print Shop. The pieces here are amazing and affordable.
Urban Dweller Chick Gifts
This season as I shop online for family, friends, and my fiance, I keep getting distracted by cute items I want for myself – and I want them now! It doesn’t help that so many retailers have going-out-of-business type sales these days. Who can resist a good sale? In November, I had a new package of clothing, accessories, or makeup arrive nearly every third day; my savings stash is shrinking quickly and Tyler is getting a little annoyed with my impulsiveness.
I thought I’d share some of my favorite picks for who I call the “Urban Dweller Chick”. An Urban Dweller chick is someone who doesn’t play by the rules and enjoys mixing and matching her wardrobe and lifestyle. She probably strives to be a Jane of all trades.
Items pictured above:
- Happy Socks Melange & Color Socks $10.00
- Digitime Digital Multifunction Watch $36.00
- Sample: 100 Fashion Designers – 010 Curators $187.00
- State & Lake Mini Messenger with Tassels $77.00 (sale price)
- Deer Pattern Sweater Dress $58.00
- Kate Spade New York Taxi Mittens $65.00
Throughout the season I’ll bring you the best items I think of for the ladies, and maybe even some men if I get around to it. Hopefully some of my picks help you, and ladies, don’t forget to send this url to your boyfriends and hubbies who have a hard time picking out presents for you!
Add these 3 fat-burning snacks to your diet…
It’s safe to say that working out is great and very much a necessity when it comes to losing or maintaining weight, but diet is probably even more important. Eating right not only helps you look good, but feel good as well. Wouldn’t it be nice if food helped burn calories? Believe it or not, there are plenty of fat burning filler foods out there that satisfy hunger strikes and provide energy to help fuel workouts.
I recently read some great advice on some foods to incorporate and why they’re so important to keep us going. Here are some foods that not only fuel your workouts and keep you full, but they also help burn more calories aside from being active. Try to incorporate these foods into your daily diet and see how much they can affect your weight management or weight loss goals.
Cottage Cheese – This provides calcium and ladies need calcium, especially when you can see your 30’s creeping near. Some can’t take the taste, some love it. The key is to eat low fat and in moderation – like a few spoon-fulls. I add sugar-free apple sauce and a dash of cinnamon for flavor. Cinnamon is known to suppress the appetite and apple sauce fills some of your fruit requirement for the day. Cottage Cheese is also a dairy protein and supplies casein and amino acid glutamine to burn fat and assist in recovery after exercise. What a multi-tasking snack eh?
Quinoa – This will fill your grain intake and it’s great to have for lunch, dinner, or snack. It took me a while to acquire the taste, but once I found a way to add flavor I had no problem having about a cup a day. It’s high in fiber which stimulates the release of appetite-suppressing hormones and increases the time it takes for food to move through your intestinal system, meaning fewer calories stored as fat (in other words, keeps you feeling full). This is great with a dash of hot sauce and roasted peppers. I mix mine with a veggie like butternut squash to give it some sweetness while also getting in that veggie requirement.
Veggies – It’s important to eat vegetables, but if you’re anything like me, you probably go into the store with the intention of using them, then before you know it, they’re gross and rotten. Not anymore. As soon as you get home from the store, get the baking sheet out, chop away, mix with salt, pepper and olive oil, and then roast. Put them in little to-go containers and munch on them at work. Or, mix with the quinoa – so good! Veggies like broccoli, spinach, and sweet potatoes are superfoods because they saturate the body with health-building nutrients. Incorporating veggies in your diet keeps your body functioning properly and burning fat (even in between workouts).
When adding what’s required daily like dairy, fruits, veggies, grains, and protein it’s amazing to see the energy level spike so workouts, and even the workday, are easier to get through.
Food is Fashion This Holiday at Barneys
Barneys New York will take holiday shoppers on a culinary journey through their “Have a Foodie Holiday” window displays. In a partnership with the Food Network/Cooking Channel and Illycaffe, Barneys says the windows will feature the “rock stars” of the food world.
The windows will be unveiled Nov. 16 at a book party for Lee Brian Schrager’s new book, “The Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival Cookbook: Recipes and Behind-the-Scenes Stories from America’s Hottest Chefs.” One window will highlight the Bad Boys of Food (Bobby Flay, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and Mario Batali), another will display the Ladies (Paula Deen, Cat Cora, Rachael Ray, and Anita Lo) a third will display Trailblazers like Julia Child and Jamie Oliver.
Insiders say that this collaboration is just one more example of how “the cultural power of food is on the rise,” with a special appeal for Gen X shoppers. “Chefs have become tastemakers in so many ways, from gentrifying urban neighborhoods with their restaurants to inspiring the fashion world with their bravura.” Others are saying that this collaboration should help Barney’s holiday performance.
I’m not sure a department store that has high-end cafe’s within select stores should plan to bank on food celebrities, and their fans. To me, it’s a long stretch. Do you think the average Paula Deen fan makes it to NYC, let alone to shop at Barneys? I feel like the Barnes and Noble would have a better shot of success with windows displaying food since they sell the books. Maybe I just have to wait until 11/16 to get more perspective on the windows.
What’s your fall hair color going to be?
Now that the midst of fall is here, our wardrobes probably resemble more layers, boots, and chunky sweaters. But, what’s going on with your hair color, have you switched it up from your glistening summer highlights? Every fall I tend to go darker. In fact, one fall a few years ago, I went dark brown to the point my coworkers didn’t recognize me. I went from being a dark blond with highlights to chestnut brown. A little out of my comfort zone – yes, but that’s what I wanted at the time. It was a little too dramatic so now I’m sticking a little closer to what’s natural. Dark rich mahogany tones really accent the hues of fall and tend to complement the faded once sun-kissed glow our faces recently had. Going dark is great and all but, we’re all unique and one color might look great on one person but may wash out and not quite fit another.
Choosing color: How do you pick the most flattering color that looks most natural for you? I found an article on Elle.com that helped me figure this out. Stylists can help answer this question too but it’s always nice to have an idea on your own. Celebrity hair pro Lorri Goddard-Clark, colorist to Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, and Reese Witherspoon suggests looking into your eyes. If you look into your eyes you will see little flecks. If they are golden or yellow, a natural match would be warmer hair colors. If they are bluer or deep bluish black then a natural match would be neutral or cooler tones. To enhance your skin tone, never go more than two shades lighter or darker—this guarantees that you won’t fade or wash away your natural beauty.
At-Home Kits: I’ve heard good and bad things about at-home hair coloring kits. Goddard-Clark suggests going for a look close to your natural color. If you have naturally light brown hair and want some pale honey highlights—DIY kits are fine. But if you want highlights more than two or three shades lighter than your natural color you should see a professional.
Color upkeep: How often should you revamp your color? I think 6 to 8 weeks is pretty coming to do some updating. There are some great shampoos out there, one of which we’ve seen on Stylebust before, MorroccanOil. My hair tends to fade fast so I’ve used it along with many others. That’s what happens when you’re a product junky. These work, I just like variety! Here are some products I’ve work with…of course MorroccanOil. It’s sulfate free so it’s great for color treated hair. What I appreciate is that it restores shine and softness to dull lifeless hair. Another great product is use is Aveda’s Color Conserve. It really has proven to help the color last longer and makes hair soft and manageable all day.
Designer Chocolate for Halloween
I was surfing the web late last night (I keep drinking too much coffee at work) and I came across some gorgeous chocolates that were produced specifically for Halloween. Now, I should note I’m not the biggest Halloween fan out there, in fact when asked what I will be for Halloween, I usually reply “at home”. But I am a HUGE sucker for designer chocolate…well really any kind of chocolate – but I like to at least pretend I’m a chocolate snob.
Take a look at these pieces. They are to die for!
When it comes to chocolate art for Armani / Dolci, every last bit is a luxury. Armani’s Halloween chocolates are sure to be a royal treat for your taste buds!
Compartes Chocolatier makes a box of Skull and bones dark chocolate truffles ($24). The truffles are infused with a sinful blend of Mexican hot chocolate spices (including cayenne and cinnamon). They will spice up anyone’s Halloween!
Gourmet truffles go gory in this box of white and dark chocolate tombstones, bats, skulls, and ghosts by Godiva ($18).
Recchiuti chocolates have been known for their artistic colored cocoa butter designs, and this Halloween version does not disappoint. When you find edible things this beautiful in front of you, you’ll actually find it’s quite difficult to take a bite.
Compartes dark chocolate skull pops ($5 each) are made from single-origin dark chocolate and infused with our blend of Mexican hot chocolate spices (including cayenne and cinnamon) and hand-painted with gold glitter. Skulls with a kick!
