Time telling- Looking at Nixon Watches

Pulling out your iPhone to tell someone the time is getting a little old now. Sorry, but you’re no longer the only person who owns an iPhone. Now let’s get you a watch that suits you. Have you considered a Nixon watch? Well you should.

The Nixon brand conjures up images of Skaters, Surfers and Snowboarders. The brand has been around for over ten years and offers practical accessories like bags, wallets, headphones, and watches for both men and women. But you don’t have to be part of these subcultures to appreciate their well-designed and durable products.

You can sort through their watch pages or use the Nixon watch selector that uses gender, display, band material and color to find a suitable watch that fits your lifestyle. Nixon watches start at about $60.00 and range up to $2,600 with their Ceramic 51-30 watch. Work or play there’s probably a cleverly named watch that suits your taste.

If you are all work and need something that’s more than just regular everyday flair Nixon has created the 42-20 Chrono for both men and women. This style is offered in 8 different colors for men and 12 different colors for women, two of those models include Swarovski crystals if you want to turn fancy up a notch. Rose Gold and Antique Gold are two of my favorites but it also looks exceptionally classy in the Tortoise design. If you are a little less work and more play, the same model is taken further with the 42-20 Tide. This multi-functional version allows you to set both low and high tide so you know when to start wrapping up your end of the day duties and letting your friends now they can find you down by the beach. The Rubber Re-run is one of Nixon’s newer models that offers the basics if you are going on a run, heading to the gym or get the urge to go skinny dipping but want to keep track of time to show you’re somewhat responsible. Here it is shown in all white but also comes in Coral, Rhodo and Sky Blue if you’re looking for something not so basic and more vibrant. Some of the Nixon designs demand attention. The original format of these watches are taken apart and broken down to all face, all band, or no band at all. The Murf is all face and looks like a throw back to an old record player or radio dial from the early 70’s. The men’s Rotolog brings in natural elements through wood inlays that are contrasted against stainless steel and run throughout the whole watchband. The Highball, another new design is an extra large modern version of a man’s pocket watch. Its watches like these that are not for everyone and take some confidence to wear. Nixon's "The Highball" Nixon’s mission statement, also know as their “Vitals” page reads, “We make the little shit better. The stuff you have that isn’t noticed first, but can’t be ignored. We pay attention to it. We argue about it. We work day and night to make the little shit as good as it can be, so when you wear it, you feel like you’ve got a leg up on the rest of the world.

And they’re right regardless of what you do or how you do it, the functionality of their products goes a long way. The essentials Nixon offers get noticed and become part of your everyday life, jet setting trip or what others call your hobby but you consider a way of life. So if you need a time telling device that has more character than your iPhone you at least now know where to start.

OnePiece: Latest in High-Fashion Comfort

The OnePiece, the adult onesie. It is specifically referred to on the website as OnePiece: Jump in jumpsuit all-in-one onesie chilloutsuit. The OnePiece could be the love-child of last year’s home-comfort hit, the snuggie and Juicy Couture’s velour track suit.

It is, an all-in-one tracksuit with a front zipper. It’s made of comfy fleece cotton and zips from crotch up to forehead, for those invisible types. The website suggests it for doing homework, walking dogs, hangovers, and snowboarding. They cost £80-£110 depending on the design you choose. Jumpsuits are the in-thing at the moment. In fact, jumpsuits have been all over the catwalks. Chloe gave us wool styles for Autumn/Winter 2010, Zac Posen’s Spring/Summer 2011 catwalk showed sheer patterned and silky versions and YSL’s resort 2011 included a one-piece.

My only complaint is that it doesn’t have the footsie pajama feet thing going. Other than that, I want one in every color for every facet of my life.

Makeup Brushes: Which Fiber is Best

Thanks to my posts on Style Bust, I’ve been learning more and more about quality cosmetics and have been slowly substituting my old drug store brands with better ones like Nars, Smashbox, L’ancome and others. Of course, I do have some favorite brands like Avon and Almay that will continue to be included in my makeup case. And as my makeup case evolves, so do my makeup brushes.

Once upon a time, I either used whichever brush came with the makeup or had some cheap ones lying in the bottom of my case. A couple of years ago, I gave my sister a set of Sable Hair brushes for her birthday. My sister became a makeup application expert ever since she spent her nights trying out different techniques as a teen. She is the go-to makeup girl in my family for parties and special events, and she enjoys doing it.

When she saw the set of brushes, she was speechless and even though we were in the middle of having cake, she could not resist it and started applying makeup on my face in order to try them out; of course, I didn’t complain.

The point of my long winded introduction is to emphasize the importance of having the right makeup brush for your needs. As I’ve been researching for this article, I find there is too much information to add in one post. I decided to divide it in three parts:

  • A summary of the types of fibers available
  • Basic makeup brushes and how to use them
  • Advanced makeup brushes and how to use them

And now, let’s talk about makeup brush fibers.

Brush_set

Makeup brush fibers can be either natural made from animal hair or synthetic. Both of them have a place in makeup collections, depending on what type of cosmetic is being applied.

Goat Hair is the most common fiber used for makeup brushes. They are good at holding large amounts of powder and are a good choice for blush, bronzer and face powder since the makeup won’t get trapped in the brush and you’ll get an even application.

Sable Hair is soft and fine and makeup brushes made of this hair typically have pointy tips. The pointy shape and softness of sable hair makes it an ideal choice for eyeshadow and eyeliners.

Pony Hair is strong and durable. It tends to have a cylindrical shape where there is a consistent thickness from root to tip. Pony hair is a versatile fiber and is good for powder, blush and eyeshadow makeup brushes.

Camel Hair is a generic term used to described makeup brushes that are made with a mix of squirrel, goat or pony hair.

Squirrel Hair is the softest natural hair type and also the most expensive brushes. Similar to sable hair, the brushes are wide in the middle and have a pointed tip, which makes the ideal as blending brushes and for use on eye creases.

Synthetic makeup brushes are made of nylon, which is less absorbent than natural hair fibers. Because they are less absorbent, synthetic brushes are typically used for applying liquid-based products. Synthetic brushes typically do not last as long as natural fiber brushes.

A mix of natural and synthetic fibers is typically referred to as duo fiber brushes. This mix of fibers increases the durability, stiffness and liquid handling ability of the makeup brush.

I understand that after making it a point to buy cruelty-free cosmetics, the option of using animal hair in order to apply them is not appealing. Thankfully there is a synthetic fiber called Taklon which is designed to have anti-bacterial qualities, as well as softness, versatility and durability. Companies like Branded J, Origins, Sevi Cosmetics and many others offer these brushes.

If you are purchasing the brushes online, I’ve noticed that natural hair brushes don’t specify which hair it is. Regardless of which type of brush you decide on, I suggest to go to the store and feel them against your hand. There is nothing better than to feel that gentle touch on your skin, it’ll make Monday mornings a little bit nicer.

Eyeshadow Palettes From Rue La La

I like eyeshadow, but I’m only interested in specific colors and brands; and because I’m sort of frugal, I only buy eyeshadows on Cyber Monday or from flash sale sites like ideeli, Gilt Groupe and Rue La La. I realize I’m not that makeup-trend-forward, but to me, restocking my eyeshadows semi-yearly is about all I need.

My most recent eyeshadows came from Rue La La, in gift form, from Amy the concierge at Rue La La. She knew I had a bad user experience while their website wasn’t working properly, so she sent me the Smashbox ‘Eye Wish’ Palette and the Tarte TEN Limited Edition Collector’s Palette.

Have a Foodie Holiday, Barneys’ holiday catalogue

I recently posted Food is Fashion This Holiday Season at Barneys, which goes into the details of Barneys collaboration with the Food Network for their food related holiday campaign titled “Have a Foodie Holiday”.

I just got wind from the nice people at NOWNESS.com that photographer Nobuyoshi Araki’s photographed actress and model Kiko Mizuhara for the “Have a Foodie Holiday” themed catalog. When I realized that Araki is the photographer responsible for the Lady Gaga images inVouge Hommes Japan, I was certain that the imagery for this crazy “Have a Foodie Holiday” would be stellar.

‘Tis the season for Holiday dresses

It’s that time again, when your calendars start filling up with Holiday functions.  Whatever your Holiday plans entail, this time of year can be hectic…planning dinner parties, scheduling vacation time, or most importantly, finding something to wear to all of your Holiday events.

I’m here to possibly help lower your stress level.  I’ve created looks appropriate for all of the events you have scheduled for this Holiday season!

The Office Party

Boat necklines are very elegant and flattering on most body types.  Pair a LBD with nude heels and a jacket with a pop of color for a polished and sophisticated look.  You might not wear this at the office, but you want your outfit to portray you and your professionalism (even if you you are dancing with the guy from accounting)!

Affordable options: Pleated v-neck dress, Ruffle jacket

Dinner with your boyfriend (and his parents)

This dress is festive, cute and the coverage of the dress is perfect for dinner with your future in-laws!  Pair a short dress with opaque tights for a charming, yet modern look (his parents will be sure to adore you)!

Affordable options: Chiffon dress, Open-toe platform heels

Dinner with friends

This is a trendy outfit that your friends will appreciate!  Pair a cable-knit sweater with a knee length skirt for that “lady-like” look that we love for Fall.  Add a motorcycle jacket and ankle boots for a little edge.

Affordable options: Wrap skirt, Ribbed collar jacket

Cocktail Party

Nothing screams the Holiday’s like a little bit of glitz and glam.  If you’re attending a “cocktail party,” this is the perfect look.  Pair a metallic dress with platform ankle boots for a flirty and fun look!

Affordable options: Metallic lace dress, Zipper clutch

Food is Fashion This Holiday at Barneys

Barneys New York will take holiday shoppers on a culinary journey through their “Have a Foodie Holiday” window displays. In a partnership with the Food Network/Cooking Channel and Illycaffe, Barneys says the windows will feature the “rock stars” of the food world.

The windows will be unveiled Nov. 16 at a book party for Lee Brian Schrager’s new book, “The Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival Cookbook: Recipes and Behind-the-Scenes Stories from America’s Hottest Chefs.” One window will highlight the Bad Boys of Food (Bobby Flay, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and Mario Batali), another will display the Ladies (Paula Deen, Cat Cora, Rachael Ray, and Anita Lo) a third will display Trailblazers like Julia Child and Jamie Oliver.

Insiders say that this collaboration is just one more example of how “the cultural power of food is on the rise,” with a special appeal for Gen X shoppers. “Chefs have become tastemakers in so many ways, from gentrifying urban neighborhoods with their restaurants to inspiring the fashion world with their bravura.” Others are saying that this collaboration should help Barney’s holiday performance.

I’m not sure a department store that has high-end cafe’s within select stores should plan to bank on food celebrities, and their fans. To me, it’s a long stretch. Do you think the average Paula Deen fan makes it to NYC, let alone to shop at Barneys? I feel like the Barnes and Noble would have a better shot of success with windows displaying food since they sell the books. Maybe I just have to wait until 11/16 to get more perspective on the windows.

What’s your fall hair color going to be?

Now that the midst of fall is here, our wardrobes probably resemble more layers, boots, and chunky sweaters. But, what’s going on with your hair color, have you switched it up from your glistening summer highlights? Every fall I tend to go darker. In fact, one fall a few years ago, I went dark brown to the point my coworkers didn’t recognize me. I went from being a dark blond with highlights to chestnut brown.  A little out of my comfort zone – yes, but that’s what I wanted at the time.  It was a little too dramatic so now I’m sticking a little closer to what’s natural.  Dark rich mahogany tones really accent the hues of fall and tend to complement the faded once sun-kissed glow our faces recently had. Going dark is great and all but, we’re all unique and one color might look great on one person but may wash out and not quite fit another.

Choosing color: How do you pick the most flattering color that looks most natural for you? I found an article on Elle.com that helped me figure this out. Stylists can help answer this question too but it’s always nice to have an idea on your own.  Celebrity hair pro Lorri Goddard-Clark, colorist to Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, and Reese Witherspoon suggests looking into your eyes. If you look into your eyes you will see little flecks. If they are golden or yellow, a natural match would be warmer hair colors. If they are bluer or deep bluish black then a natural match would be neutral or cooler tones. To enhance your skin tone, never go more than two shades lighter or darker—this guarantees that you won’t fade or wash away your natural beauty.

Good Housekeeping voted best at-home hair color

At-Home Kits: I’ve heard good and bad things about at-home hair coloring kits. Goddard-Clark suggests going for a look close to your natural color. If you have naturally light brown hair and want some pale honey highlights—DIY kits are fine. But if you want highlights more than two or three shades lighter than your natural color you should see a professional.

Color upkeep:  How often should you revamp your color? I think 6 to 8 weeks is pretty coming to do some updating. There are some great shampoos out there, one of which we’ve seen on Stylebust before, MorroccanOil. My hair tends to fade fast so I’ve used it along with many others. That’s what happens when you’re a product junky. These work, I just like variety! Here are some products I’ve work with…of course MorroccanOil. It’s sulfate free so it’s great for color treated hair. What I appreciate is that it restores shine and softness to dull lifeless hair. Another great product is use is Aveda’s Color Conserve. It really has proven to help the color last longer and makes hair soft and manageable all day.
