Will Skinnies Become Obsolete?

Skinny jeans have become a denim phenomenon to hit the fashion industry.  Skinny or tapered jeans were popularized by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and more.  Five decades later, the style has become the standard of denim, with people of all shapes, sizes, and preferences sporting these jeans.  They’ve been a favorite hit among hipsters, indie rockers, women and men of all ages, children, etc.  In addition to the range of fans, the particular style has proven to be incredibly versatile.  Whether one is tucking them into boots, wearing them under dresses or with long blouses, or indulging in jeggings, one cannot possibly refute the power of these jeans.  In fact, nearly every well-known denim designer has designed an array of skinnies: black, white, leopard, zippered, lace, you name it!  And nearly every retail establishment that carries denim has at least one style of the skinny jean.

While this particular style remains hot, there’s some undeniable competition with other denim styles: wide leg, boyfriend, straight leg, etc.  In speaking with several fashionistas, including a hip designer for a renowned denim line, they’ve all agreed–“We’re bored with skinnies!”  Just as trends come and go, one definitely wonders, “Will skinnies last?  If so, for how long?” While I have been a fairly strong advocate for the dissemination of the skinny jean–I did work for a denim designer after all–I have always questioned this particular style, like many trends.  I, too, have wondered if the novelty will wear off.

In all honesty, there’s something refreshing about seeing someone sport a pair of comfortable, worn-in, unglamorous jeans.

‘Melting Men’ a project by artist Nele Azevedo

This story isn’t new, but I was thrilled to come across it and thought it was worth sharing here.

Last year, Brazilian artist and environmentalist Nele Azevedo created an art project called ‘Melting Men’. This project was meant to draw to the World Wildlife Fund’s warning, that melting ice caps could cause sea-levels to rise more than 3.3 ft by the year 2100. Azevedo’s ‘Melting Men’ consisted of 1,000 man figurines carved out of ice that were then intricately placed on the steps to the Concert Hall in Berlin’s Gendarmen Market Square. Since it’s summer in Berlin, with temperatures well into 70-83 degrees, the ice carved man figurines began to melt within 30 minutes.

The Swede Life from Stockholm Fashion Week

Fashion Weeks around the world are about to begin!  Which means, we’re about to see what we’ll be wearing next Spring!

Carin Wester (an amazing Swedish designer), stepped outside the box a little for her Spring/Summer 2011 collection.  Instead of women wearing menswear…the male models walked down the runway wearing womenswear inspired pieces!  Yes, a little odd…but the male models looked pretty cool with their lace bed coats, shirts and belts!

I would wear all of the outfits above…just add a slouchy tank underneath, a pair of wedges and I’ll be set for Spring!

Not only did I love Carin Wester’s menswear, there are a few pieces of note in her women’s collection too.  And check out the shoes…she knows how to do a great shoe (remember the Klea boots from last Fall?).

Stockholm’s Fashion week (which was August 16-22), showcased 25 designers over a 3 day period.  A few local Stockholm designers worth checking out: Whyred; Filippa K; and Nakkna.

I can’t wait to see what my favorite designers have up their sleeves for Spring 2011!

Modern Marvels at the MoMA

Ever fall in love with a museum piece and want to take it home? Well, at the Museum of Modern Art Store you can! (For a price, of course.) With their reproductions of iconic works from modern art history, fun gifts and accessories for art lovers, and collectible miniatures from their exhibitions, there’s something for everyone at their online store (www.momastore.org). My favorite section? The furniture and lighting products, of course! Designed by the masters of design themselves, these life-sized reproductions of visionary works are now available to the homes of the public. Have a look!

Eames® LCW Chair $755

(You’ve probably seen this chair before. For those of you who don’t know, the name Eames in the furniture design world is treated with god-like reverence. Designed by Charles and Ray Eames in the 1940s, Eames chairs are universally recognized, admired, and coveted even today.)

Mi Chair $700

Bellini Chair $155

Handle Stool $495

Noguchi Coffee Table $1,500

Phrena Hanging Lamp $92

Akari Beehive Table Lamp $95

Bookworm Shelf $425

Fur Real.

It may be hated by members of animal rights groups but it loved by the rich and famous; fur is making a big comeback on the runway! Although some may argue that it never really left the lap of luxury, it certainly has never been so big with the middle class and ballers on a budget alike.

Fashionable faux fur coats for Fall 2010

With the improvement of faux fur, it is easier than ever to give the illusion of grandeur. I found a knee length faux leopard print coat at the Value Village on Capitol Hill for only $14! I was blown away. Last winter H&M also had a few of really nice faux fur stoles and vests that were beyond affordable. It can be a little cheesy but I think when done right, a faux fur stole can be cute.

Freddy Mercury in Faux Fur

I was Freddy Mercury for Halloween and wore my faux stole.

And if you’re hustlin’ enough to be able to buy the real thing, go for it! Unless you have hang ups about it, that is. Sometimes, If you search hard enough, you can find the real thing in vintage shops or thrift stores. My friend found a real rabbit fur vest at Value Village for around $28. I also tried to heckle a mink stole out of the hands of a crazy old woman at the goodwill bins (who was going to give it to her cat!!!) but with little luck. I probably would’ve paid like 70 cents for it.

This fall, fur is a staple no matter what the look is, and for good reason. It isn’t only luxurious but practical too. Nothing keeps the chill away like the hide of an animal (or the fibers of a fake one)!

OPI Rocker Chick and Swiss Collection

As if I didn’t have enough nail polish colors at home, OPI just introduced two new lines that are just too yummy to miss. For Sephora by OPI they introduced a mini set called Rocker Chick, with awesome colors that look strong and metallic. I always love the names of the colors, this mini collection includes: Fiercely Fabulous, Just a Little Dangerous, Already Famous, and Go My Own Way. They will give your nails a real kick.

Opi_Rocker_Chick

Also, for the Fall/Winter 2010 season, OPI is introducing the Swiss Collection:

Beyond the borders of a classic neutral palette into a new zone where refined shades of rich color become the definitive go-to hues to wear every day.”

OPI_Swiss_Collection_Fall-Winter 2010

The names of the colors include: Color so hot it berns, From A to Z-urich, Ski teal we drop, Glitzerland, Yodel me on my cell, Cuckoo for this color and many others. With a selection like this, what’s a girl to do?

You can purchase these colors at Sephora, the Rocker Chick Mini Collection retails for $18, and the Swiss Collection can be bought in your local beauty supply store or at www.nailpolishpro.com, where each polish retails for $7.99.

The old is new again

We’re all aware that fashion tends to repeat itself.  Just take a good look at what we’re seeing on the runways now and if you search hard enough…you will find that a lot of the current trends have been inspired by retro or vintage looks!

Below, is a John French photograph that caught my eye (he was a well-known English fashion photographer in the late 40’s).

Obviously, you can tell this photo is dated.  But looking at this photo, made me think of some trends I’ve seen on the runways this year.  For example: the long side braid (Alexander Wang and Miu Miu); the curve hugging silhouettes (Dolce & Gabbana and Nina Ricci); and even a crochet top (Rodarte).

Rebecca Taylor, Donna Karan, Miu Miu, Oscar de la Renta, Aquilando Rimondi

All of the looks above are from Spring 2010 runway shows…and as you can see, they resemble the black and white photograph from the 60’s…but with a modern twist!

Fashion trends tend to be recycled every 50 years, so it makes sense that we’re now seeing trends from the 60’s and 70’s pop-up all over the runways!
